CBS renews a whole bunch of shows

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...by-cbs/175317/

I think the Mentalist was the only one that was really on the bubble but it looks like they'll get to extend the Red John story another season.
The Good Wife didn't have exceptional ratings but it's close to syndication numbers so that was pretty much expected.

All the shows I watch look like they are back. Only one drama, The Good Wife and the comedies TBBT and HIMYM. Plus Survivor and TAR and 60 Minutes. That's the extent of my CBS viewing.

BBT and Mentalist are the only CBS shows we regularly watch. Glad they are coming back, but honestly I didn't really fear that they wouldn't.

I thought this would be the last season of How I Met Your Mother.

Criminal Minds is missing from that list. I'm guessing it's more due to contract negotiations than cancellation danger.

I'm really glad about BBT, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods (in no particular order since I love all of them!!)

IIRC, Elementary was also regarded as being on the bubble. I'm glad that's coming back as well...

Funny how the #1 channel is the one that has mostly scripted content. Think the channels running mostly "reality" shows will take the hint?

I think it's less about scripted vs. reality and more about predictable quality. CBS' viewership tunes in because they know exactly what to expect from their shows and they know that those shows will deliver. Most of CBS' dramas are by-the-book procedurals, all their comedies are multi-cams with laugh tracks*, their reality shows follow a very tried-and-true formula.

Other networks have taken risks in the recent past and tried to air shows with more serialized content, with more out-of-the-box concepts, and while those shows are usually adored by critics and get the buzz, they don't get the mass viewers that the safe, predictable, procedural stuff does on CBS.

Glad to see all 4 of my CBS shows are coming back. H50, Elementary, BBT and Person of Interest. Though if 5-0 got the boot I wouldn't shed a tear. It's light fun but ultimately eye candy. POI however is one of my favorites as is Elementary. BBT goes without saying. It's the only sitcom I watch.

Two noticeable absences: Criminal Minds & Vegas. CM is (as you speculated) totally due to contract negotiations with several key actors. They will bring it back if it works out.

Vegas is a true on-the-bubble show. Today's renewals, and the lack of news about Vegas, harbingers poorly for its future.

Elementary is doing well in the ratings, and was considered a lock for renewal.

Two and a Half Men has also not been renewed yet. Also due to ongoing contract negotiations.

Vegas will have to do exceptionally well on Fridays to have much of a shot.
I'm guessing that CSI: NY is also on its way out.

#1 in terms of ratings != (necessarily) #1 in profits.

This exactly. CBS has been running the same type of shows since the 1950s. Of course their core audience reflects that Really though this is smart programming. While I'm a fan of serialized "different" dramas, you have to have a level of commitment to them. It's not a huge deal to miss an episode of any of these CBS shows, but miss an episode of, say Revolution, and you might feel lost. People are less likely to commit to shows like that. Especially in the era of DVRs where people can record shows and only watch after they "wait and see" if the show gains any traction. Of course that's a self fulfilling prophecy. To me, CBS is the turtle, the others the hare. They move slow and steady, and know, at the end of the day, that most of what they show will be successful, if not a full fledged hit.

The Good Wife is arguably the best network drama. Great to have it back for a 5th year, even though the ratings aren't that good.

Ratings for both are pretty poor by CBS' standards. Golden Boy's ratings probably mean it's not getting renewed. And CSI:NY is old enough that's it's now probably very expensive and would need even better numbers than it's getting to warrant renewal.

Plus, with Undercover Boss coming back and most of the other dramas being renewed, CBS has to make room to air a couple new dramas in its fall schedule.

Pleased to see Blue Bloods on the list. It's hard for a Friday night slot to make it, but the show has heart. If you're not watching it, give it a go!

BBT will keep going until they decide enough is enough or the stars start making ridiculous contract demands (or it stops being funny).

I don't understand how that stupidly fake Survivor is still going! Even ardent fans are complaining about it this year!!

fake how? Prove it. (Yes, early on, he showed some reenactments for IIRC only faraway shots, which I still think is bad.)

CBS has so many prime-time hits, do they have enough prime-time hours to hold all that stuff? Or are they having to add extra hours and days?
