Can someone please tell the people at SNL that they are doing a comedy sketch show?

Top Dog Chef was a good idea other than that. Nada.

I watched a PBS Pioneers of TV the other day on funny ladies - Lucille Ball, Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, Betty White, Carol Burnett

I laughed more during that than I have at SNL in years.

Haven't watched this one yet but always good to see an early and totally predictable 'it hasn't been funny for years' post.

Wow, not good this week. I always think they should be at their best after a break but I guess it doesn't work like that. The Starbucks commercial was a bit funny. Richard and the Buffalo are amusing just because they work so hard at it. And ... um ... nope, that's it.

I thought a couple of small parts of Top Dog Chef were funny, the doorbell and cat parts mainly.

The costumes were great, especially Nasim Pedrad's, and they will no doubt be fueling the fantasies of "furries" for a long time to come.

The Starbucks commercial was HILARIOUS!

The Hobbit commercial was cute too.

Piers Morgan cracked me up-it didn't go on too long which was good.

Otherwise-MEH

Jennifer Lawrence is getting a lot of flak for her monologue trash talking the other Oscar nominees. Even though she was obviously speaking what someone else wrote for her, she could have always refused to do it. I wonder if it is going to hurt her chances of winning, I don't see how it could have helped.

Only with voters who are unfamiliar with SNL.

The Starbucks commercial was hilarious. Second-hand news is getting tired. Not bad overall.

The Starbucks commercial was hilarious!

Um, that's it. The rest of the show was a big disappointment. Some of the sketches clearly had potential, in terms of their ideas: Top Dog Chef and the Johnny Two Tones restaurant specifically, but the execution fell flat.

Musical guest was reasonably good.

Of course you did. You were watching highlights. Not everything those actresses did was funny.

In 20 years if they show you only highlights of this current SNL group, you'd laugh a lot more than if you watched a regular SNL show.

As for this episode, it wasn't all that bad. I agree that the monologue couldn't have helped her Oscar chances.

I agree with verdugan; there's a "nostalgia bump" people tend to add to comedy of yesteryear.

I just went back and watched one of the most famous Lucy bits that I haven't seen in a while (the chocolate production line). While it did make me chuckle, and can see why it was innovative at the time - I don't think it could compete with the demands for today's comedy audience.

I didnt care for them on the radio but watching them live was quite entertaining from their instrumentation to their attire.

…I just watched this episode last night..

It's kind of a shame that virtually ALL of the highlights were the SAME ones we see on EVERY retrospective show. Though I'll slightly be a hypocrite in saying that the Siamese Elephant skit always gets to me and they just barely showed the *start* of that sketch (but it wasn't Carol being the funny one in that sketch).

The one major thing I learned is -- WOW, Betty White has been in TV for a LONG time.. Since the 1940s!

It wasn't on this episode, but the girl you regret talking to at a party is really hilarious. Women on SNL are far funnier than Lucy, and Carol Burnett.

The monologue was funny, and will not hurt her chances at an Oscar.

You know, sometimes, I just watch SNL with an incredibly low standard. Usually comes when the guest is someone I'm not familiar with or don't really like. Like this week.

And you know, I think I like those episodes better. It's not that there's anything earth shatteringly funny, but with no expectations, things are amusing.

Yeah a very weak episode. There was so much that happened since they were last on. Armstrong, fiscal cliff, gun debate, that they could have tackled a lot better. I was so expecting a Keenan Thompson bit where he was dressed as Oprah interviewing Lance Armstrong or something.

I thought the Lumineers were pretty good. You could see the host's eyes moving while reading the cue cards in almost every sketch.
