The Americans S1E5 COMINT OAD 2/27/13

Being a female spy is some nasty sex work! When the contact was whipping Elizabeth and she became a helpless, cowering, pleading victim, I was like "WTF, she could beat the crap out of this guy". Then I realized she was playing it that way because it was the smart thing to do. Very cool.

Nina rinsing her mouth out with the tea - excellent touch by the writers that really made me feel disgusted right along with her.

John Boy really screwed up an opportunity with the codes.

Agree on every comment. The tea thing, and then wiping her mouth. Jeez, this is not a broadcast network.

When FBI guy asked Nina how she got the info and she came out and bluntly said explicitly what she did, he got this look on his face that kind of made me want to slap him. He seemed so shocked at the extent she would go to, but he is the one that forced her into the situation in the first place.

I know nothing of the spy trade, especially circa 1981, but I think part of his look was possibly that female American spies would not be expected to go to that extreme, but again, I really don't know.

Something about the feel of The Americans makes me uneasy.

It's not only dark, it's nasty/dirty. We can't root for the stars.

Ya think a defense contractor shot through the head will be noticed?

I was on the edge of my seat as she escaped from the FBI motor pool while it turned out that Phillip was not at all worried. What if she had run into Mr. FBI neighbor? "Oh, Hai. I was working with one of your colleagues on his vacation plans."

For being deep undercover they sure have a fast pipeline to get instructions like "shoot this guy at noon."

The FBI knows they have a leak that tipped off the KGB that they knew that they knew. Now the KGB knows that they knew that they knew and they have to find out who knew.

The parallel plot lines were kind of interesting, apparently attempting to setup a moral equivalence between the 2 sides practicing their spycraft.

I like it dirty and nasty.

The SHOW people. The SHOW. Glad cable networks have the balls to make shows that are NOT appropriate for all audiences.

That Felicity is one tough gal. And she kills in cold blood AGAIN!!!

I don't understand this. I consider myself a pretty morally conservative person and I don't find anything in this show hugely shocking. I did joke with Spouse that they seem to pretty dedicated to a very French style of covertcy.

I don't think the defense contractor's death went unnoticed. I think that once the FBI knew the Russians knew they knew, then both sides expected this as the likeliest outcome. FBI doesn't get the remainder of the KGB defense network unraveled, and KGB loses their defense network contact. Nobody wins. Early in the show they established the defense contractor as a widower without children, so there's an implication that there weren't really any civilians who would mourn him (or figure out what lead to his death).

Nina, on the other hand, is gonna get herself killed. Yeah, her method worked, but she gets some time being privy to the secrets in the director's office and ten minutes later the FBI knows what the KGB is up to? Hmm.....I wonder who the mole could possibly be!

Meanwhile, love, Love, LOVE Phillip!

"The mission was to get the intelligence. I got that!"
"Great. I'll be back in an hour."

I don't understand the comments about it being too dark because it is real life stuff, not fiction. How can you say something that is necessary in the real world is too dark? In real life spies and terrorists and traitors (and those just suspected of being such) get killed in cold blood. It is like refusing to read about history because people who felt they were the good guys did bad things to people they felt were the bad guys for what they felt were good reasons.

We are only safe in this world because there are people willing to do the bad things for us. The truth aint pretty.

Stuff like what I call torture porn movies are dark.

Technically, the secretary is safe. Only she and the guy she was blowing knows she over heard the plans, but I think he's too happy with her to think she's the one.

Nyet. Boris vill have her eliminated with not a thought. He did have her followed when she went to the bar to "overhear the conversations."

The only problem would be if it splashed back on Boris himself.

But sometimes they keep it around for possible use as evidence.

He very strongly implied that she should do something like that the last time they met as well. He mentioned that she is beautiful twice with enough emphasis that it was clear to me what he meant.

I really enjoy this show. One of my favorites on TV right now. Just a perfect mix of period stuff, intrigue, and likable characters.

I thought he kept saying how beautiful she is because he has the hots for her. Then they showed how messed up his marriage is. He's probably going to do something stupid to save her.

Then why did he look so shocked and appalled? I think he naively thought she could just look beautiful and coo at the man and he would tell her everything.

Well, in my experience according to a friend of mine that can work. Then again, no beautiful woman ever asked me him to betray my his country...

He didn't look that shocked to me. Seemed like he was feigning shock.

No kidding. You know the KGB just broke your encryption AND you're trying to bust a KGB spy and agent the next day.

Do you:
1) change all your encryption immediatly; tipping off the KGB (or at minimum putting them back on alert)
2) continue using the broken encryption but run this one op without using those comms
3) begin using the broken encryption to feed both harmless info and false data to the KGB (not to mention whatever you need them to know) while setting up a new encrypted comms they aren't aware of

They chose the worst result of the lot. 2 isn't optimal, but you can afford to let the KGB listen to your other communications for one day in order to minimize the risk to this extremely important counter-intel op.

3 is better, but it won't work forever, is harder to get new secure comms, and really needs interagency cooperation to figure out what can or should be "leaked".

But as we saw 1 was just stupid.
(On the other hand, unlike the KGB, the FBI wasn't really noted for it's counter-intel chops; so that's might be fairly realistic)

Since his marriage is falling apart, I think he had a thing for the hot Soviet girl.

I was surprised Nina said cockadoodle. I wrote **** first but apparently tcf cuts out ****.

When Keri sneaked out of the trunk I was expecting more tension than her just strolling out with a "see ya later" to the guards.

An overall meh episode.
