Black Jesus on Adult Swim (spoilers)

I just finished watching the first episode. It surely will raise the ire of the holy rollers but it cracked me the hell up.

TV Review: ‘Black Jesus’

'Black Jesus' raises ire of pastors, faith groups

Quote:
"I gathered our youth group and had them sit and watch the trailer of the show," said Kerry Burkey, senior pastor at the 300-member Rockledge Church of Christ, who sees the show as a symbol of a decline in American pop culture.

"It was horrible, disgusting and completely offensive. Down to a person, everyone in the youth group was offended. It just shows where we are a nation. … We have no respect for God," Burkey said.

They must be all white.

Jesus is usually shown as being black in churches that have predominately african-american members.

We haven't seen anything quite like this on tv before. It's John From Cincinnati on acid. One of the co-creators is Mike Clattenburg, who also created my beloved Trailer Park Boys. It's nice to see his love of language hasn't changed. :-) He did tone it down from TPB for sensitive American ears.

I thought it was great and I'm looking forward to future episodes. It's 5.9 on IMBD but 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, so there's obviously a rather large difference of opinion!

I didn't especially care for the show. I'll probably watch one or two more episodes. My initial impression wasn't so hot.

I'd be surprised if that were true.

I wasn't offended. But I didn't find it particularly funny either.

What about that staple gun welded to some pipe and paint gun which shot marbles? That wasn't funny? And Jesus and his homies rob some punks who turn out to be white, and he quickly forgives them and donated the proceeds from the robbery to a needy charity? Driving with his robe hanging out the car door? "Heavens"! Pushing the van to try to avoid a parking ticket? LOL!!

Didn't laugh once. Not even a chuckle.

Just thinking about the girl with the pink hood on makes me chuckle.

Don't know about predominately, but it was definitely true of the black Baptist churches in the time/place where I grew up.

For all we know, they have it right and he was black. He certainly was probably not the white blue-eyed figure that Americans associate with him.

Black Jesus is exactly as realistic as a black Santa. It's just a character. Same as setting Romeo & Juliet in modern times on a different continent from the original story. Or cowboys & indians stories set in space a la Star Wars.

I hope they have Black Jesus go to a local YMCA and try to swim, but he can only stand on the water while his homies are splashing around.

My wife and I call that "Surfer-dude Jesus" ... blonde haired and blue eyed ...
its hard to imagine he'd have that image when born in a middle eastern country ...

We got some chuckles during the show for sure ...
smacked a Season Pass on it!

The second episode wasn't as funny as the first but I did get a chuckle out of the Facebook fight. Mags looks and talks like a friend of mine.

I made it through to the season finale but it was a struggle towards the end. There were some funny characters - Lloyd, Ms. Tootie, Mags and one or two others but Slink Johnson seemed like the weak link of the actors. There was nothing compelling or funny about him. The constant n-word usage wore me down over the course of the series until I was just watching the show until the end out of habit. I can understand how its occasional use can have a comedic effect but using it in what seemed like every other sentence turned me off.
