Regarding Thread Titles in Now Playing...

Can I ask a huge favor and request that all thread titles have the original air date (OAD) listed?

I can't keep track of the episode numbers, and I fear opening some of the threads and getting spoiled.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

And if you're going to list the original air date, please don't add in the letters "OAD"---they don't add anything!

Reasonable request. One quick tip is I can bring up imbd episode listings and see what day an episode aired if I am not sure. Just helps in those instances where people might forget.

It's a good idea to list both the episode # and the OAD. For instance, for someone watching a show on DVD, or streaming, or banked on their DVR long after it aired, OADs are meaningless.

Also, it is easier to search for a specific episode by title.

I would like to agree on a format if possible, maybe something like:

Show Name | Episode Number | Episode Title | OAD

Personally I don't care what the episode number is, it doesn't matter to me, but the OAD I agree should be in the title.

Good idea! I love to not only discuss, but read what the others here have to say about the shows I watch. But often I just have to cruise by a thread, and don't even get me started on the 'whole season' threads for popular shows.

Personally, from being here a while, I like seeing - 'Show Name' S01 E03 {Title} OAD {date}. I suppose the season & ep number are the least important components as long as there is the show name, OAD, and ep title. JMNSHO, FWIW, YMMV

Why, why, why do you want people to put the letters "OAD" in the thread title? What is the difference between
The Apprentice S12E08 "Ad Hawk" 8 Apr 2012
and
The Apprentice S12E08 "Ad Hawk" OAD 8 Apr 2012
How do the letters "OAD" add anything? They just make the thread title longer. The date is clearly the air date.

I can't think of why a date would be different than an OAD but is it possible it could happen?

I didn't mean to imply that I need to see the letters OAD. I was just referencing that the OAD is an important part of the equation. I like the way you put it.

I guess I didn't say that very well

So, I'm one of the ones who's been doing threads without dates, and I've tried to correct that, and will use air dates in the future. The two threads I filed yesterday have been corrected, and air dates were added. Sorry if I've caused anyone any difficulty.

I'll pick an example.

Lost Girl on SyFy.
Tonights episode is Bloodlines, SyFy is calling it "new".

OAD was 12/12/10 on Showcase in Canada.

For the purposes of Now Playing though, air date should be 4/9/12 since most people will see it for the first time tonight.

Picking Nits, I know.

I'll admit, even with the thread title correct, I've gone into a thread and started reading and found I wasn't remembering anything being discussed.
Back out and realize I'm a week behind in my watching and didn't realize it.
Fringe being the latest example.

I used to omit the OAD in favor of the episode #, but now I try to include all four parts. I have no idea what good the date is, but many people want it so it's easy enough to add.

I don't really pay much attention to episode titles, but don't some of them get awfully long? Personally, I wouldn't want to be trying to squeeze an episode title into a thread title.

I'm good with show name, air date, season/episode # in whatever order. Plenty enough for me to identify if it's a thread I want to read.

I'm giving a vote for episode titles, it really helps me a lot more than an OAD, but I certainly can appreciate the OAD being there.

For me the perfect title is:
Show - Episode title - S##E## then a date.
No title makes it really hard to remember vs date, I don't know the darn date, that's why I have Tivo record it!

The current round of Mad Men threads with no title really bugs me.. I know mm2margaret is trying, that should always be a positive karma.

I'll also put in the vote for no placeholders, they're against the TV forum rules and with something like Mad Men there's really no need, a thread will get started.

Just so you know:

I will not do any more placeholding threads, and I will try to add titles and air dates if I start any more threads. There was some confusion about the title for Mad Men, episode 504, as some listings (including AMC's own site) showing a different title than what eventually the title ended up being. Whenever the title is clear, if I start a Thread, I will use the title.

Really, it's all my fault........and ....

Personally, I prefer
Show SssEee "Episode Title" Date

like:

The Apprentice S12E08 "Ad Hawk" 08 Apr 2012

I think it's better to separate the numbers of the episode from the numbers of the date. I also like to see the episode titles in quotes because that helps them stand out from the show name.

This is now my preferred format. It reads naturally and doesn't lead to confusion (except that some people will tend to switch month & date & year and put in just numbers instead of the name of the month).

I vote against European date formats!

In general when I'm behind on a show the episode name or number are most helpful. When I'm caught up, the date is most helpful. That's a good argument to always include both. I've been too lazy in the past to look up episode numbers, I'll be sure to do that moving forward.

This weeks MM had a very unique issue with the title, but it's not anyone's fault, it gave us a chance to open up the discussion more.

And the placeholder issue has a history, between that and a few other users that do bogus placeholders to make sure all season threads don't happen it can be a hot button issue at times.
