Leftovers 7/14/2014 "Two Boats and a Helicopter"

Okay I missed it - why was this episode titled "Two Boats and a Helicopter"?

It's an old joke.

There's a huge flood. A man is stuck in his house, and as the water rises, he climbs out a window, and onto the roof.

A boat comes by and the captain says come on, we'll rescue you! He says no, God will save me!

Another boat comes by, and this captain says come on, we'll rescue you, but again, the man says, no! God will save me!

A helicopter comes along, and he waves them away, as he cries, no! God will save me!

The man drowns.

When he finds himself in heaven, he says, but God! God, I had faith that you would save me! Why didn't you?

God says, I sent two boats and a helicopter...

Greg

Here's as much as I can remember from what I was going to post earlier:

1) Damn, I know that joke, but for some reason I didn't immediately recognize the punchline

2) Although it's not necessarily meant to be taken literally, I wonder which would be the boats and the helicopter.. Candidates: on one side, winning the money, having the money still be back in his car.. or if keeping the church ends up actually being bad, then maybe the guy trying to steal his money, the guy throwing the rock at his head, and the coma.

3) I was glad that the woman he was caring for wasn't just some random person he felt charitable towards, but someone of HIS who was directly impacted by the Departure.. That goes towards helping to explain why he doesn't see it as the rapture too - it was a horrible moment for him.

4) It took me a while to get how he knew to play red.. he saw the birds so he knew which table, but the other time he saw them was on the red traffic light.

5) Pretty cold telling his sister that her husband was cheating on her.. Interesting bit of info for us though.. It had me wondering if ONLY bad people were taken, but then I remembered the first one we saw go - the baby.. then again the baby WAS crying a lot..

The casino scene bugged me....

a) No way he doesn't get a security escort to his car

2) I'm yelling at him to lock his doors and get the hell out of there instead of just lounging in his car

iii) gee, he's getting robbed... and he's the only person on the whole planet that didn't see it coming.

(plus the stupid blonde saying that "black is due")

He partially redeemed himself by clocking the robber and taking his money back (I only say "partially" because it seems he might not have finished the job )

I think I figured out why the showrunners have the GR cult members smoking all the time. It's to make them look all grown-up and mature.

This had the vibe of some of the Locke-centric episodes of Lost, which means I really liked it.

All of this. How stupid can you get? Plus he leaves the package on the car seat; I was surprised it wasn't taken when he got back. Sure he was just going to jump out for a second, but stick on the floor or under the seat for goodness' sake.

On the other hand, he now has $140k (assuming he put back the $20k seed money) and no responsibilities other than caring for his wife... plenty of money for more printer ink!!

Would they even give you cash? I know when my GF has won $5K in the past, they didn't even give her a choice, they gave her a check. For $160K, it would be crazy to give cash.

I found his American accent terrible. He's trying for the "cowboy" sound, while living in Upper New York.

As a self-proclaimed gambling addict, here are some insights:

1. There's a new law in the works that will required paperwork for bringing in that much money. Basically, the person has to state where they got the money.

2. The roulette table on the main floor would not have that many Orange chips ($1000). The only main floor games that would have that much is Craps. The High Limit roulette would probably have them.

3. It would've taken much longer for the Floor Manager to get approval to go over the table limit, especially for an unknown gambler. Subsequent bets will take longer, and may be even refused.

4. Cashing in that much chip will require him to fill out tax forms. He will be liable for at least 25% tax rate, especially now that he doesn't have a non-profit Church to donate it to.

5. As someone already mentioned, he should've gotten a security guard with him. The casino should've offered it when he cashed out.

6. As for cash or check, casinos by law needs to have enough cash for big winnings. If not, they can be liable for fines. Seneca Falls Casino, near Buffalo, is a big casino that would not have any problems with $160k cash. It's a problem for those small tavern casinos in Nevada.

I wonder how he finds out all the stuff about everybody? It's one thing to follow the girl's husband and see that he's cheating, and it's something else to go back after the fact and prove it. Unless he already knew all this stuff for some reason. Some things may have been "confessed' to him, but not that.

My wife and I were ready to delete the season pass if this episode didn't improve on the earlier ones. While not a great episode it was more entertaining than the first 2. It was good enough to keep us watching for now. We did scream at the priest a lot to quit being so stupid with the money. He definitely was the only one in the world that didn't see the robbery coming.

In this episode Eccleston reminded me of another actor - similar voice, mannerisms, etc - but I can't put my finger on who it is.

And now it's going to bug me.

Love seeing Eccleston getting good screen time.

My wife and I are in agreement that this show is getting a little better with each episode. Given that our viewing schedule is a little light at the moment, we're sticking with it. I still don't think it's great, but at least it's heading in the right direction.

Pedantic, but the 914 area code is "downstate" New York- specifically Westchester County in the Hudson Valley area, very close to New York City.

I was confused by the title too. And now that you told the joke, I have heard this joke before. I think the title would have worked if we'd heard the joke in the episode somewhere.

Great episode. I really liked this actor ever since he played a Dr. Who. His American accent seems fine.

The whole episode was intense. I really wanted him to make it and save his church. He really wanted to believe his faith but I think there is doubt. The girl in the comma waking up without his prayer, the empty church, and the unworthy people being taken, are shaking his faith. Or maybe he is disparate to have any sign of divine intervention.

And he does seem to get it, but then his kind act in helping a person is rewarded with a rock in the face and the lose of his church.

The priest telling people why their missing loved ones were not good enough to be raptured, is very terrible. He deserves a punch in the face...oh, wait. hehe

Do you think the priest will end up leading the White/smoking cult that took his church? Do you think he'll loose his religion and cross over to the hateful cult?
