yes but the forced calls always succeed. it's the calls the tivo does or doesn't do that fail. I just checked it and the call that was supposed to happen @ 8:24 didn't happen. Still says the last succeeded call was @5:29 wed. next call is @ 1:32 am tonight.

Yup, that's a different issue. Does it show up with an error code? That is typical behavior for the dreaded "S03" code but I don't know if that code shows up on S1 boxes. It does on S2 and higher for sure. You might try a kickstart 57 (see here: http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-kickstart-codes.php). Mine would almost always succeed in the download but fail during the processing.

How much is your time worth? An S1 isn't worth it to me because of all the time you have to spend to set it up and keep it working. An S2 is much easier to use and you also have multi room viewing. The cost of an S2 isn't that much more than an S1.

I understand all that. I'm having problems with 2 of my series 2 tivo's and activated my S1. I just looked and the S1 has made 2 successful daily calls in a row now. I'll keep watching it until I can get 1 of the 2 S2's working again. I'm taking the power supply to a TV repair man on tues. The S1 is easier to hack than the S2 and I got sort of a soft spot for it because it is so old and still works. I'm gonna hack it and put large drives in it like the one I had before it. Call it a project I started and never finished. I now want to finish it.
