so why would someone buy a used Tivo w/ lifetime and not transfer the sub?

So back at the end of Oct, i sold on ebay my old TivoHD with lifetime on it. it had 1 bad tuner which was clearly disclosed on the ebay auction. It sold for just over $200. The buyer paid immediately, i shipped it out the next day. It got to him first week in November.

I called Tivo for them to put a note on the service # that it's to be transferred to this individual. Gave the guy the details on what he needed to do. No reply acknowledging anything. Ok, no problem...

I noticed after about a week he hadn't transferred yet, it's still showing on my account. So i sent the guy an email to see if he's run into any issue. No reply. Last week, still on my account, sent the guy another email. no reply still.

So i'm just curious, why would someone buy this and not transfer the lifetime? Can he still get the tivo working without transferring it? He'd have to run guided set up again once he puts in a new cablecard, but i don't know if there's anything preventing him from i guess using it while its still on my account. I can't figure out any reason why i should care either since there's nothing to pay for this box.

what am i missing?

It will still work. They just won't have access to the web scheduling.

I have three Series 3 boxes with lifetime on my account that the new owners never transferred. I think if they stay on there a year you're allowed to start scheduling annoying shows for the new owners, right? Or is that too mean?

If they don't use Tivo Desktop or any of the web components there's no reason to transfer, I have 2 Tivo's gone to family/friends and neither has transferred them because they don't use those features.

and yes, I occasionally schedule things remotely for one friend and she gets very flustered (but she knows I still love her dearly)

If it bothers you you can call TiVo and have it moved to it's own account. Although when you transfer a lifetime unit it still shows on your account forever. You can't access it from any of the menus or schedule recordings, but it's always in the list. (I have sold a lot of lifetime units over the years and they're all still listed on my account)

I think that even if they DO transfer there is some record of it remaining on your account. I seem to remember asking about this a long while ago when I sold a unit.

As for why someone wouldn't... Laziness, apathy or not caring about the benefits are three that come to mind.

Even TiVo Desktop only needs the MAK, and you can look that up on the (untransfered TiVo).

Now, if you have multiple TiVos then they all have to be on the same account to copy/stream between themselves. So that'd be a reason to transfer.

And of course as you mentioned they won't be able to access the web features (without the original account holder's password), so no online scheduling of shows.

But with only one TiVo and no interest in the web the TiVo there's really no noticable end user impact from it being on the wrong account. (Unless you start screwing with them by web scheduling random shows to record )

Yeah, if you only have one TiVo, there's not much reason to transfer it. (Except "ethically", though I guess it's not quite an ethics question.. can't think of a better term though.)

That's true, but only if the Tivo is set up to allow transfers.

If it's not, the new owner has no way to turn it on, so having the MAK would do him no good.

To the OP:

Set up a bunch of oddball recordings for the Tivo you sold via the online scheduling.

Then, make sure downloads and transfers are disabled.
If he has been using TD to transfer shows, that will cease to work.

Give it some time, and then e-mail him again and urge that he should really put that Tivo on his own account.

Yes, I have seventeen TiVos showing up on my account. But I don't have access to any of the ones that have been transferred to new owners. But they always show up as being on my account. I really wish TiVo would change this.

I have three boxes myself and my GF has two. My GF still has not transferred her boxes to her own account since I gave her the two S3 boxes after the Premiere launch.

You forgot stupidity.

Couldn't the original owner cancel the subscription (for some unknown reason)? he sold his others TiVo's and went elsewhere?

Why would that make a difference?? I guess why wouldn't you want it in your name??

Because it works just fine as it is and the person might not want to deal with talking to a CSR on the phone. I don't know, ask my GF. It's been 32 months since I gave her two of my Series 3 boxes(OLED with 1TB drives) and she still has not transferred them to her name. They still work fine for here and she can transfer between boxes at her house. She only uses Pandora on those boxes which can use any login. She doesn't use Netflix on them(which would require her own TiVo account). So I guess she has no compelling reason to change them to her name. I stopped reminding her a while ago. So I have no idea if she will ever do it. I certainly can't force her to do it.

I've sold three lifetimed Tivos over the years, and only one buyer actually transferred the unit into his own account.

As long as the boxes function, I guess the new owners just don't see any benefit to transferring.

You can't cancel lifetime.

I've sold 4 lifetime S3s in the last 2 months and all have been transferred to new accounts and all are still showing on my account. However, if I go to the change device preferences page where I can enable video sharing and video downloads, these tivos are no longer listed.

Unless it was one sold to someone else and they had some issue with them.
