Huh? Everything Sherlock does is contrived. That's his M.O. Of course he would have carefully planned and executed his trick.

I was going to write that. If you read Doyle, all of Sherlock is a cheat.

But I'll reserve judgement until it's explained.
Just realized that strictly speaking I'm out of bounds for the title of the thread so I'm spoilerizing my original conjecture about the 3rd episode and this reply....

Spoiler:

The idea I threw out was that the entire scene was from John's perspective would be something I consider a cheat. But if he contrived a way to fall from a building without killing himself and then had the crowd/bicyclist all in on it as homeless helpers, then I'd agree with the others that this is just Sherlock being Sherlock. (Though, I admit I've only ever tried to read one book back when I was a young teen and douldn't get very far into it).

You should try again, I bought the kindle edition of "Every thing Conan Doyle wrote" for $1, I was inspired to do so by Sherlock, the Robert Downey/Jude Law and the upcoming "Elementary" with Jonny Lee Miller, and Lucy Liu (which I'm not optimistic, but I'll watch because Lucy Liu could have my children, and she wouldn't have to promise to bring them up Unitarian)
Anyway the short stories are a mixed bag, the novels are less so, I think that ACD did a better job with the tighter constraints of the short story format.

I just finished the episode this thread is supposed to be about (I can't believe so many people are discussing later episodes here) and must be really dense. What the hell did SHER mean (the code to her camera phone*)? I get that SH = Sherlock Holmes, but what does the ER stand for?

And why did they keep calling it a camera phone? Aren't almost all phones equipped with a camera? Was this supposed to take place before that feature was included on damn near any device sold?

Duh! LOL That didn't even occur to me. The SH was sticking out to me because he signs his texts that way. I feel really stupid now.

What kind of idiot are you? My kind, it would seem. I asked my wife the same question.

By the way, the phone display showed "locked" prominently below the code, so after the code was entered, it displayed:

SHER

LOCKED

It could have, if it repainted the display after the code was entered. But that is not what was shown in this episode. It showed what I posted.
