But the old blue Linksys WRT54G routers loaded with the free DD-WRT firmware make great wireless ethernet bridges for less than the cost of an adapter.

There is a type of device known as a wireless bridge, which uses the Ethernet port rather than USB. Any of these should work. TiVo's own N "adapter" is of this type, as I understand it.

Only it doesn't include a switch. For the same price or less as the TiVo wireless N adapter, you can get a wireless bridge that can be used with the TiVo as well as other devices.

As long as your wireless network is implemented properly, with a decent wireless bridge you can have identical speeds to when the TiVo is connected to the wired network. This is the case with my Dlink wireless Bridges.
