Spartacus:War of the Damned S3E02 ""Wolves at the Gate"" 2/1/13

Good episode, I was surprised by Spartacus twice in this episode:

1. Not having given instruction against the wholesale slaughter of women/children.

2. Killing the guy threatening to set fire to the grain without giving the wife a real shot at getting the gate opened.

Does anyone have a clue what the slave was doing between Caesar's legs with the knife?

I wonder if Spartacus overestimated his men. Perhaps he thought it would not be necessary to tell them not to kill anyone who was unarmed and not fighting, since he just assumed they would behave that way automatically.

I was not surprised that Spartacus killed the guy with the torch when the chance arose. The woman had been talking to the guy for long enough to convince him, but he was still hesitating, and Spartacus could not risk the lives of his entire army on that man putting down the torch. I do think Spartacus killed him a couple seconds too soon, though, because his men were not in position to catch the torch yet.

I was wondering about that slave on Caesar myself. Perhaps there is some Roman custom that we are not aware of. Just from what we saw, I thought the slave was maybe cutting Caesar and then sucking or licking blood from the wound.

I wonder if it was some kind of...medical treatment. For the kind of ailment that Caesar is the kind of guy to get.

I was thinking it was just bloodletting for who knows what VD he might have. My second thought was it was a cutter fetish or something but who knows? Hopefully they'll explain it in an upcoming ep.

Doesn't seem like the kind of thing they'd leave hanging.

I don't think I've ever seen Caesar portrayed the way he is here - I like it.

I think it's safe to say that the characterizations of Caesar and especially Crassus have been...enhanced for dramatic purposes.

Confused. Is this Caesar the Caesar? And why have him portrayed by a guy who looks like Brad Pitt?

Yes. And, because this is Spartacus, where Brad Pitt would be the ugliest, most out-of-shape member of the cast.

I hear this guy was their first choice, but he couldn't get out from under his existing contract:
