When will Search get some love? So busted

Search is so hit and miss on Premiere. Just had another example of how busted it is. I was looking for "FireFly 10th Anniversary: Browncoats Unite" on SCIFI. Searched for Firefly. NOTHING. Searched for Browncoats - it came up with the full title that STARTS with Firefly. Sigh.

There's no excuse for this kind of busted behavior in their CORE functionality when it used to work fine on Series 2 (and I think 3 - I never remember having these issues on Series 1, 2, or 3).

I just searched Firefly. A show named Firefly was first on the list. The 10th Anniversary show you are looking for came up 2nd.

I searched for Browncoats and got the same result as you, which looks accurate to me. It's doing intelligent matching -- searching for exact title match, words-in-title-match, keywords in episode description or episode name match, etc. And then it ranks the results according to how you tell it to (defaulted to Best Match I think).

I'm guessing you fat-fingered Firefly if you literally saw 0 results. You rarely have to type in an entire show title before it finds what you are looking for. Typing in just "FIR" yields that 10th Anniversary show as result #3.

The results are ranked by popularity not just by how much it matches. So sometimes a new show will not appear near the top of the list initially. But I think TiVo Search is pretty awesome in how it finds and ranks items. Much better than the old search by title method.

Weird. I did it twice initially and both times no 10th annivesary special until I used Browncoats. Just did it again with Firefly and this time it worked. This is not the first time something like this has happened, though.

I didn't know Tivo was ranking search on popularity rather than straight alpha now. Guess that's a positive takeaway.

You got me all excited by saying it is on SCIFI, which I assumed meant SYFY so I searched for it (FYI, it was the third one down when I reached FIR). To my great disappointment, it is actually on SCIENCE which Comcast moved to another tier a while back.

You can also switch between popularity and alpha order with the "B" button on the remote.

Sweet, I'll try that and see if the results are more consistently to my liking. Thanks for the tip.

Well, there's always eztv 2-3 hours after airtime.
