I've actually never seen the original, I just feel like I have because it is such a part of pop culture. So the intricacies of the original storyline aren't known to me, but I had kind of thought that the original was focused on Norman's unnatural fixation/relationship with his mother (was she ever even a living character in the original?) The remake seems more like it is focusing on the reverse: the mother's unnatural fixation/relationship with Norman. Over time I suppose that will lead more toward the original, unless things already aren't as they seem with him.

I didn't find this show funny at all. Season pass deleted.

It was a bit creepy. I don't think my mom would want me to watch it.

I totally agree, in fact I think that people who haven't seen it and are watching Bates Motel are making assumptions about the original. It's only natural to do so, but given the statements Carlton Cuse has been making about it being loosely based on the characters & settings, but not adhering strictly to the original continuity, you should watch it sooner than later.

Here's why.

About 20 years ago, a friend and I were talking, and he told me he never saw it. So I got him to come over one day for a viewing. Before we watched it, I asked, "What do you know about Psycho?" He said, "Not much, that it's one of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous movies, and that Norman Bates is the killer."

I got a nice smile on my face.

He was ENTHRALLED. Then <REDACTED> happened and was glued to the screen unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Watch it. The sooner, the better.

Greg

I was afraid that Norma was going to pin the dad's death on Norman, which is why they left town. Norman being woozy was never explained, and I'm sure that was on purpose. I bet she killed dad and drugged Norman to do it. She needed Norman to find the body, and then find her in the shower, showing that she had an 'alibi'. I'm sure that we'll get more backstory on the dad at a later date.

Norma got too into stabbing the dude. Sure, she'd get off in the event of a trial, with what we know at this point, but heck, maybe she was under suspicion for dad, and then it might show a pattern of behavior. I'm honestly surprised that they went as far as they did with the rape scene on TV.

I had a hard time suspending disbelief that Norman would suddenly have these girls after him. He seems too nerdy to have grabbed their attention.

^This, this, this! That was the most unrealistic (at least to me) part of the whole show.

Slightly OT. I'm a volunteer event photographer for March of Dimes NJ and PA, MS Delaware, American Cancer Society NJ, and a Christian grammar school in NJ. People at work would always ask me how I always got such great shoots of hot looking women, the types that use to spit on you at college. I said it's real easy, have some nerdy badge saying you're the official photographer, them go up to them, tell them to smile for the "enter your favorite charity here", and take their picture.

I noticed, though that when he snuck out of the house to meet them, that only the one seemed interested at all. The other three had "can we just get going already?" / "why are we wasting time with him" expressions on their faces.

I'm expecting a mean girls revelation...suck him in with immediate (if limited) attention, gain his trust, then humiliate him publicly. As if Norma alone won't twist him enough.

Thats what I expected too. And it might still happen. It may be they are just extra mean-mean girls with a particularly devious plan that takes an extended time frame to carry out. And for some reason I also expect that Norman or his mom will extract some particularly sweet revenge in turn.

No need to burn that option in the premier. He was scooped up and then virtually abandoned for the party, but keep working the bait and set the hook deep. The more he naively trusts, the better the humiliation.

And the greater the response when he reveals it to Mommy

BTW, I've had a thing for Vera Farmiga since UC: Under Cover...and she'll hit the 40+ list later this year. I don't feel guilty

The scene was SO DARK it was hard to see the pictures in the book.. I watched it originally walking on the treadmill on iPad mini… went back to orig recording on TV & wasn't much better!

Don't get what the deal was with the injections at the end.

I didn't think it was GREAT, but since we're coming close to the summer with far less new programming (though I've got a bunch saved), I'll watch at least one or two more.

I also thought it was weird with all of the women going after him.

I mostly only paid attention to the beginning credits, was there even a "based on characters created by Robert Bloch", or even a mention of Hitchcock, if some of the movie creations were used?

I don't know about the opening credits, but Bloch was given credit during the end credits.

Yeah, I'm in for this, my hunch is that they're in it for the long game and this will eventually happen.

I don't know, but one of the drawings in the book showed a needle going into a girl's arm.
