The Simpsons live in ________

Spoiler:
Oregon - “Springfield was named after Springfield, Ore.,” “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening told Smithsonian Magazine.

http://seattle.cbslocal.com/2012/04/...ld-is-located/

I thought it was revealed Springfield was located elsewhere previously. I guess I was wrong.

It was pretty much an open secret that that's where MG got the name from.
But in universe they make it as inconsistent as they possibly can.

I think there was a contest where different Springfields competed, and one of them (not in Oregon) won.

FWIW Groening lived in Portland at some point, and if live here or even just drive around, it becomes fairly apparent that the city has had an influence on him. There are streets named Quimby, Flanders, etc.

To the point where the characters said that the view from Springfield included 4 non-neighboring states. In The Simpsons Movie, Flanders says that Springfield borders Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky.

So we'll march day and night, by the big cooling tower,
They have the plant, but we have the power.

Young kids these days!

On a local radio show they do a quick 5 question trivia game everyday. Today one question was what town is the simpsons based in. The 19 year old had NO clue!

(that and she didn't get the lead singer of Guns N' Roses or ever heard of Varsity Blues the movie)

I bet there will be some bar that will say they were the inspiration for Moe's or some 7-11 for the Quickie mart.

Vermont, IIRC - the "prize" was the opportunity to host the "world premiere" of The Simpsons Movie, although the closest thing they had to celebrities was Matt Groening and James L. Brooks (of course, there was another "premiere" in Hollywood - it reminded me of the story about the last Star Trek: The Next Generation movie, where they invited Wil Wheaton (whose part was pretty much cut from the film, although he is credited - at the end of the complete acting credits) to a screening that turned out to be open to pretty much every Paramount employee, which was after the "real" premiere which nobody even mentioned to him).

About three years ago, when the Simpsons stamps came out, I made a list of all of the Springfields in the USA with their own post offices (in case anybody wanted a collection of Springfield postmarks):
Quote:
Arkansas - 72157
Colorado - 81073
Georgia - 31329
Illinois - 62701 (and others)
Kentucky - 40069
Louisiana - 70462
Maine - 04487
Massachusetts - 01103 (and others)
Minnesota - 56087
Missouri - 65802 (and others)
Nebraska - 68059
New Hampshire - 03284
New Jersey - 07081
Ohio - 45502 (and others)
Oregon - 97477, 97478
Pennsylvania - 19064
South Carolina - 29146
South Dakota - 57062
Tennessee - 37172
Virginia - 22150 (and others)
Vermont - 05156
West Virginia - 26763

There are Springfields in Idaho (83277) and Wisconsin (53176), but
these post offices may be just sites that have only post office boxes
(they would have their own 5-digit ZIP because every box has its own
9-digit ZIP) and may not have any actual postmarking services.

In addition, there are Springfields in Michigan (49015 and 49037) and
Texas (75853), but the post offices themselves are in Battle Creek and
Montalba, respectively, so there are no Springfield postmarks.

Six states do not have Springfields but do have Springvilles:
Alabama - 35146
California - 93265
Indiana - 47462
Iowa - 52336
New York - 14141
Utah - 84663, 84664
Also, Arizona has a Springerville (85938) but no Springfield

There are Shelbyvilles in:
Illinois - 62565
Indiana - 46176
Kentucky - 40065
Michigan - 49344
Missouri - 63469
Tennessee - 37160
Texas - 75973
Also, there are Selbyvilles in Delaware (19944 - officially Fenwick
Island) and West Virginia (26236)

This was mentioned in a Simpsons comic book once - Flanders, Lovejoy, Quimby, Kearney, and Terwilliger are named after Portland streets. (Wiggum is Matt Groening's mother's maiden name; Krabappel is named for Miss Crabtree from the Little Rascals/Our Gang shorts; Hoover was Matt's first grade teacher's name; Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is a character in a Sanjit Ray movie)

"Where is Springfield?" has been discussed to death.
There are some instances where it is its own state (for example, it has its own license plates, it shares a border with four other states at a single point, and the "state capital" is Capitol City), but others (usually when they show maps) where the state doesn't exist.

In the credits of the movie, it says something like, "Filmed on location in Springfield, ____________________." (Actually, it's a blank space instead of an underline, but I didn't want a word wrap to remove the space.)

Cooling towers were in Rainier, OR which is west of Portland. Trojan has since been decommissioned and torn down.

This was always a no-brainer since Groening is from Oregon.

FAKE OUT!

Quote:
"The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening said Thursday the show is not set in Springfield, Oregon, contradicting earlier remarks in which he seemed to suggest the famous cartoon family resided in the Beaver State.

Groening said "Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon," in an interview with Smithsonian magazine published earlier in the week, setting off a frenzy online among fans of the animated comedy.

But Thursday, Groening told TV Guide that his comments were misunderstood.

"I never said Springfield [from 'The Simpsons'] was in Oregon," Groening told the TV magazine. "I said Springfield was the name of my sled."

No, the problem is that people interpreted "Springfield is named after Springfield, Oregon" to mean "the Simpsons live in Oregon." But that's not what it means.

This.

When I first read the article a couple of days ago, that was exactly what I was thinking.

I don't think it was a setup, but they can swap out the chalkboard gag very close to airtime. I think they're doing it to just make a joke about the mistaken "revelation".

Like I said, it's well known that Springfield is named after the one in Oregon, but in-universe they try to contradict themselves as much as possible as to where it is. In the "Behind the Laughter" episode, they even redubbed a line on subsequent airings to change the state name.

"742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, Oh-hiya Maude!"

Prior to the chalkboard gag though it said "Now entering Oregon" under The Simpsons opening title. So basically the opening contradicted itself, which is the norm for the Simpsons.

Yes, I wondered about that too. Having read this thread, and then seeing the opening that said "Now Entering Oregon," I gathered this was them finally acknowledging that Springfield is in Oregon, until Bart's chalkboard gag then refuted it.
