Black Sails - .1

Did pirates deals in US $ during this time? I would think the pound sterling would be the "world" currency of the day. Any history experts here.

This show seems like more of a comedy than a drama. It has little historical accuracy, and even the characters are not very consistent or plausible. I don't think it measures up to Spartacus at all (not that Spartacus was perfectly accurate and plausible, but at least it seemed like the writers were trying, and sometimes succeeding, whereas it seems like the writers here are not even trying)

But they may have been talking about Spanish dollars.

Anyway, this is a standard wikipedia kind of question.

They did mention the currency was in Spanish dollars towards the end of the show. I thought it was a bit strange that they kept talking about dollars as well as pieces of eight. As it turns out, they are one and the same. Nice to know you can learn something about history without having to watch just the History Channel.

You do realize that Michael Bay is one of the Executive Producers, right? I wouldn't expect anything much in the way of accuracy in favor of a lot of action and sword fights with him involved.

Wasn't it Shillings?

Though the thought of them using Bitcoins is better. That would make me laugh if the show is a comedy.

Where does this show air?

I liked it enough I signed up for Starz, even though I generally don't like Michael Bay. Looks like they want to create a "Game of Thrones" type vibe, though the opening theme music is horrible.

Enjoyable? A bit. Factually accurate? Slightly better than the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney. Went for that Howard Stern "lesbian = ratings" rating pretty darn fast. The pacing of the first episode leaves me thinking this one may burn out fast and turn into little more than a period soap opera....we'll see.

Historically accurate? C'mon, it's a prequel to Treasure Island, there's not supposed to be any historical accuracy.

I liked it well enough. Spartacus took a few episodes to blossom and I'll give this show the same.

I really liked this show. As to realistic, I have no clue. It has to be more realistic than the normal pirate stuff we see like the Johnny Depp movies.

I was referring to the use of the $, which I took to mean US $. At the current time period of the show they are talking about the Spanish Dollar which would be the accepted currency in both North and South America. (As another poster pointed out)

It will come out in DVD and then Netflix will have it. Not horribly long.

I thought it was horrible! There wasn't a single likeable character IMHO. And the leader being a woman is just unrealistic. The lesbian "love" scene was just thrown in there for the boys...

My husband I watched the first episode, but then deleted the Season Pass afterward. Kind of like Spartacus...

Starz cancelled a great show like Boss for drivel like this???

I liked Spartacus. It was not great, but it always seemed to be better than I expected it to be.

Black Sails is no Spartacus.

Spartacus was great. I've only seen one episode of Black Sails. I liked what I saw but that isn't a big enough sample size to compare it to other shows I've liked.

Black Sails is no Spartacus.
I think it is too early to tell. I'd love for it to be as good as Spartacus season 1 but that is a pretty high standard. Time will tell.

When did Spartacus become the litmus test for great shows?

IIRC, it was only good in how serious it took itself when it was a hacky show at best. Blood and gore plus tons of nudity. Or are posters here saying that was their expectation for this show?

Blood, gore, and nudity with a large dollop of soap opera is what I expect from Black Sails, so comparing it to Spartacus seems fair.

Did you miss the part where I said Spartacus was "not great"?

My point was that Spartacus consistently exceeded my expectations. I did not have high expectations for it, but neither did I have high expectations for Black Sails. Even so, Black Sails fell significantly below my expectations.

Yes I did. You're also not the only one to make the Spartacus link. So, you know, not everything is about YOU.
