Possible to use a pioneer DVR-57H as a crude home movie editor?

I have a friend that can get one for me. I realize the tivo portion is useless, however I simply need a recorder that can take my VHS and Hi-8 movies and transfer them to DVD. I just need it to do simple cut edits and menus. Is this possible with the Pioneer?

I've used the Panasonic DMR-E80H for this purpose in the past. If the Pioneer can't handle the task, does anyone know of another model that will?
