Dracula - New NBC series premiering 10/25

While catching up on some Pilots via On Demand, I noticed a trailer for this new series. Stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and produced by the Downton Abbey folks and director of The Tudors. Looks promising. But weird that I have not heard of this show at all.

NBC's Dracula

Yes, this series has been flying way under the radar. Which probably is just the way Dracula prefers it if he wants to take over the world.

Looks expensive to produce- and that never bodes well.

I'll give it some DVR space for sure

I'll give it a go and hope it does well.

To the Ladies: I'm old enough to remember when Frank Langella played Dracula. We slept with our windows opened.

I was planning to watch before I looked at the preview. Now I'm not interested.

Haven't seen any commercials for this, so here's a reminder- it's on tonight.

I was just about to post a reminder.

So far the reviews are mixed. My wife's top 5 shows include The Tudors, so she's psyched.

When I first heard about this last spring I was in. Then I started reading more about some of the plot, it seemed kind of dumb. He goes from Vlad the Impaler to Alexander Grayson, energy mogul. I don't know, I'm still on the fence. I might just record it on one of my older Tivos and see how it does in the ratings and in the reviews over the next few weeks.

Well, A) The transition takes about five centuries, and B) It's really not that far to go.

I'll watch. At least once, probably twice since these days they air uncorrected pilots.

This is the first I've heard of this show. I suspect it will suck.

I think this quote from hifix sums up my feelings about his 'transformation'.

Quote:
Oh Dear God. If you're Dracula and you want to get revenge on people, you make yourself an army of vampires and you tear everybody associated with those people into little bits. Your plan is "Murder, pillage, wipe the blood from my mouth" not "Boy I bet it'll make them disappointed if their stock takes a dip." If your plan takes longer than three days, you're not Dracula. You're Emily Thorne.

And I don't think you or hifix realize that when somebody is frikkin' centuries old, that's EXACTLY the guy who can take his time with his revenge.

Now, I'm not defending the show, which I haven't seen or, really, even heard anything about beyond the title and cast. So I have no idea if they do it well. But hearing that he's an immortal who plays the long game makes me more interested, not less.

Well good for you. It sounds like a boring mess that has little to do with Dracula and could easily just be about a rich guy trying to take down big oil with his new form of energy, electricity. The hitfix review covers the first 5 episodes and says they are heavy on the business dealings and very light on the vampirism.

He's gone from one of the most brutal rulers to ever live to an immortal with special powers who gets revenge on the people that cursed him and murdered his wife by taking their money via mergers and acquisitions. Sounds thrilling!!

I'm going to do the same but I just don't have high hopes after reading a bunch of reviews today.

Watched the first 15 or 20 minutes. Maybe I was just tired but it really seemed slow. I might try again in a few days.

I liked it quite a bit.

It looks like it is really expensive to make though so I wonder how long it will last.

Yeah, near as I can tell it's a mini-series. Which makes me even more interested, if they're actually going to tell a complete story with beginning, middle, end, as opposed to beginning, middle, hoping for season two.

I don't like JRM as Dracula at all (he's neither charismatic nor gorgeous) and find the story dull, but damn if the show isn't pretty- it's more like sumptuous. I don't know where it was shot but it was beautiful and I'll watch it just for that.

We watched it today. Thought it was pretty good actually. Didn't know it's a only 10 episodes. Not surprised, 'cause it looks pretty expensive to produce. I noticed Meyers is the Producer.

I think it's a nice 1-2 punch with Grim. As others have stated, I'm even more interested if it's a mini-series instead of a regular show. SP stays.

It was filmed in Budapest.
