Series 3 vs Premiere --overall better?

I need to get a unit for recording OTA, and am trying to decide between the 652160 and the Premiere. I've read in this Forum that there might be issues with the OTA tuner in the Premiere and that has me concerned. I live about 28 miles from the local towers, not sure if there is multipath issues since I haven't cut the cable cord yet.

But I would like to have at least 320GB and a hard drive that's not more than a year old if I can help it. I've been checking eBay, and wondering if I should go for a Series 3 with an upgraded (and larger) hard drive, or get a more recent Premier. I only have one television...an SD but will likely be getting an HDTV within 6 months or so.

Any suggestions? Sometimes the costs are not too different depending on storage capacity. Thanks.

An additional factor, which favors the Premiere, is that they can stream copy-protected videos to other tivo's. However if you will never have more than one tivo, or your videos will not be copy-protected (OTA videos aren't) then this is of no concern to you.

The premiere offers the HDUI but many folks think it is too slow so end up reverting to the SDUI (similar to the Series 3).

Thus you have identified the key issue for your choice: OTA reception.
Regardless of which model you get, at 28 miles you are going to need more than a cheap antenna and it should be mounted as high as you can get it, either on the roof or at least in the attic. Based on the posts in this forum, the exact nature of the OTA difference between models is hard to pin down, but there does seem to be a slight preference for the Series 3 models in some reception areas.

The 6 minute calibration video on my XL4 never transferred to my S3. I returned that POS box and I'm glad I did.

In my location the Series 3 gets better OTA reception, but not enough to create a problem for the premiere. The user interface is nicer on the premiere. Personally I don't believe that the premiere is worth paying extra for. If you get a series 3 with a new 1TB drive, you are good to go.

One of the bigger considerations that seems to be coming up more frequently is the reliability of the power supply in the S3. The capacitors seem to be hitting end of life for many, though not all, so unless you are handy you could be in for a future expense.

With a hard drive, its actually easy to upgrade yourself and have a brand new drive in the box and the old as a spare.
