colbert report - tuesday 8.6.2013 [spoilers]

last night, daft punk no-showed the colbert report's summer concert series, colbchella 2013, and stephen turned it into comedy gold! i immediately replayed the ep after watching - it was classic colbert.

the link to the story from the hollywood reporter includes hulu video of the show and montage embedded:

Daft Punk Cancels 'Colbert Report' Appearance for MTV VMAs (Video)

The TV-shy French duo was set to appear on the Comedy Central program, but due to contractual obligations to the MTV Video Music Awards later this month, they canceled their scheduled performance. Both MTV and Comedy Central are owned by Viacom.

"We booked Click and Clack over here about a month ago," host Stephen Colbert said during Tuesday's broadcast.

"Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don’t tell anyone, because, fun fact: No one told me until two hours ago.”

Still, Colbert managed to lure bold-faced names like Hugh Laurie, Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Jimmy Fallon and Jon Stewart to take part in a "Get Lucky" dance party.

According to Billboard, this was all previously planned since Thicke's performance was taped last week. Anybody know if any of the audience members at the taping confirmed this?

You might want to look into... ummm... well, almost his entire career, actually.

Ha. So. Much. Wrong. Hugh Laurie has always been comedy gold.

But on top of that, Bryan Cranston was the guy in the roller skates. And he of course has quite the comedy background as well.

no doubt the montage took days record and edit, the fallon seg was from monday before last. but i believe it was a last minute scramble to come up with something to replace the daft punk cancellation.

it wouldn't surprise me thicke's performance was taped, either. most every year there are colbchella taped performances, in order to guarantee appearances of the acts they want on the show that can't commit to a specific day during the series week.

if you watched from the beginning of the show and lead-in to the montage, though, it appears there was truth to the story. i think they were probably in negotiations to try and make the daft punk appearance work somehow, planned the montage in case the worst happened, then got their final "no" from mtv on monday. regardless, the show was great!

The bit from Jimmy Fallon's show aired last week. They gave no explanation, he just danced in and danced out.

Specifically, Hal on Malcolm in the Middle did that roller-dancing, if I remember right, so it was an extra bonus callback for us MitM fans. Gods, I miss that show.

Oh, that was Bryan Cranston? Even better! And yes, I know Hugh Laurie has done a lot of comedy-I guess I should say he needs to do MORE comedy...soon! I just love him!

I was wondering what the deal was when this episode had no title associated with it. His dancing montage was pretty funny. I think he and Conan O'Brien should do a variety show together sometime.

Not directly related to this episode but I didn't want to start a new thread...

Metallica was the guest tonight. They did one song on-air. Do they do more off the air? Or do only the really big names like McCarthy do more than one song?

They did "Master of Puppets" exclusively for colbertnation.com.

He forced Colbert to let him do two songs by threatening to have him blackballed as a communist.

Ah. Didn't check the website.

They had Thom Yorke and Flea on yesterday and the show had a banner saying that the entire performance could be found on the website. Wonder why they didn't do that for the Metallica show.

Edit: Whoops. That was the Daily Show. Got them confused since I watch them back to back.
