Getting V120 using MRS from a Series2 via a Roamio (base)

We recently got a (base) Roamio and a Mini, and have had a Series2 for years. The Series2 has a whole bunch of recordings on it. The Roamio is the "home" server for the Mini.

On the Roamio, we can watch shows from the Series2, no problem.

However, on the Mini, when we try to watch shows from the Series2, we get a V120 error that says

Quote:
The DVR you have selected is an older model TiVo DVR.
In order to watch shows on this DVR, you need to
connect to a Series4 or newer TiVo DVR. (V120)
Isn't a Roamio "series4 or newer"? Is this a case of the Mini not recognizing a Roamio properly?

You have to start transferring the show to the Roamio first, then you'll be able to watch it via the Mini. The S2 unit can't stream it and only transfer and the Mini can only stream.

Ah, ok. Thanks. The disparate capabilities explains the problem. The error message gave me hope that the Roamio might be expected to, behind the scenes, carry out the transfer from the S2 and then stream to the Mini. That would have been cool if they did that.

it's ridiculous ... don't know why they couldn't enable streaming on the S3 or S2 boxes via an update?

Oh wait I know ..... $$$$$$ ... just invest another $499 lifetime subscription + $699 on a Roamio Pro

Actually in this case it was hardware limitations. Only the S2DT had built in Ethernet, all other S2 required a USB dongle and we're slower then realtime when transferring. S3 units were barely able to do realtime transfers of HD content. The Premiere units were the first units with enough power to transfer shows at >3x realtime, which made them capable of streaming.

Not even remotely a possibility on the S2. The S3 could conceivably handle some shows if that were the only thing it was doing (eg, would probably have to lose all DVR functionality). But the S3 can't even keep up with basic DVR functionality on some cable systems right now - it can't handle the H.264 shows that will increasingly be used by cable franchises as they modernize.

The S2 and S3 hardware is SLOW and ancient; they don't have the necessary chips to do what you want.
