Shows not being recorded

My premier Tivo is starting to not record some shows. It is random in terms of channels. This week it did't record the first 15 minutes of NBC hd news and then kicked in. When it doesn't record there is no signal or picture on the channel. But if I go into the signal monitor, which involves turning off the recording and then seeing the monitor,the signal will suddenly come in. The signal leval is about 80 and the s/n is 35 . This happened with my tivo HD recorder when I previously used it . It sounds like a design defect. I would like Tivo engineering to look at this problem.

If you want to make sure that this problem is officially in TiVo's system you should call Customer Support and make sure you get (and keep) an incident #.

Not that one call will get the issue into engineering - but if more people call with the same symptoms there is a chance.

Next time you catch this happening, change nothing but go into DVR diagnostics and look at the info for the offending channel.

What are:
1. Signal Strength
2. SNR
3. RS Error Counts, and are they climbing as you watch?
4. Signal Lock
5. Program Lock
6. Frequency (only important if you use a tuning adapter for SDV)
7. Are numbers filled in for PCR-, Audio- and Video PID's?

If you use a TA, go into TA Diagnostics .... SDV Session Info
One of the sessions (one session for each tuner) should show an SDV Freq: equal to item 6 above (remember 1 MHz = 1,000 KHz.) If there is no matching frequency, you have an SDV tuning failure. These are usually corrected by a re-tune, e.g., chan up/down (or going into the signal monitor as you have been doing). There is no cure, nor one in sight, for SDV tuning failures --- Tivo has known about them for years and is ignoring the issue.

Thank you both for your help. I have created a case # and will add to it as this occurs . I don't use a tuning adaptor ,but your suggestions are very good and I will try and get that info.
