how to test premiere drive

I have a WD AV drive that may be going bad (under one year old) - what is the best software to test the drive with, assuming I pulled it from the Premiere in question.
Or, is it better to test it while still installed in the Premiere?
I assumed it would be faster using PC software, externally mounted.
thanks

PS - I am trying the amber light/pause/kickstart code thing, but can't get past the green screen of death

WD has diagnostics you can run. You can run the long read diag and then HDDSCAN SMART report.

I think all I needed was the UBCD. I have ver 5.2.1 and I believe those diags are on it. Also, go to the WDC site and you can d/l the windows version but I like UBCD as it is a standalone disk.

WDC also has a bootable CD ISO you can use for testing.

I have had WD drives that passed the WDC but did not work correctly in the TiVo, used MaxBlast to low level format the drive and the low level format failed, the drive was NG, a new WD drive worked great. (sent the other back under WD RMA)
