Loving it, except for the Theon storyline (but I pretty much hate that storyline in the books too).

I'm not at all lost and I haven't read the books, but this season continues to drag for me. To me, too much time has been spent on minor stuff like Theon and how Wildings wandering around the countryside expounding on sex and marching, but I'm sure they had to kill time since they split the book in half.

I've much preferred Seasons 1 and 2.

I don't think it's fair to say the build-up and character development have no pay-off until at least this season is over (and some likely won't pay off until next season or beyond). That's the way the books are written.

Not that I'm not saying they couldn't cut down on some of the retreading of essentially the same ground multiple times... that's not "character development", that's just repetition.

They won't "wrap up" the season, if by wrap up you mean bring all the open plotlines to closure. If anything I expect things to get MORE messy as the season ends. See previous comment, plus the first two seasons :-)

I personally think that there's more than enough material in each book for 2 10-episode seasons and I'm happy they're spending a little more time than in seasons 1 & 2. I wonder if non-book readers have had expectations set differently due to the way seasons 1 & 2 were done.

Indeed. I don't think the non-book readers have any idea how much really good stuff from the books was omitted in S1 and S2 because of time constraints. I for one am glad that they split B3 into 2 seasons.
