Mythbusters 11/18/2012 (Food Fables with Alton Brown)

Honestly, had a little of a nerdgasm when Alton popped out of that container. I knew he was going to be on, but it was still such a thrill to see him with the Mythbusters. I'd love to see this happen on a yearly basis or so. He seemed to fit in so well--crawling under the car, working with Jamie and Adam at the workbench, etc.

That said, the "myths" were a little weak. Cooking the Thanksgiving dinner using the heat of the engine was interesting, but like many other myths, they went to such extravagant means to make it happen that it's less a "myth" and more just a cool project. In fact, I'd say the whole Thanksgiving dinner segment was more an episode of Good Eats than Mythbusters.

The popcorn? Interesting. At least it gave them an explosion on an episode that probably wouldn't have one.

I found myself a little grossed out by the build team's segments. I'm not really feeling much like turkey now for some reason...and I definitely do not want runny mashed potatoes with protein powder mixed in.

Yeah, the L-Tryptophan "myth" has been well-debunked elsewhere. I don't think there was a need to test it on Mythbusters. I also really didn't need the gratuitous high speed footage of them eating. Blech.

I agree with Alton fitting in very well, so much better than the vast majority of special guests they bring on. I think that they really need to make him an honorary Mythbuster and bring him back whenever his schedule permits. Unfortunately, he's on the opposite coast most of the time, so logistically it would be difficult. Plus, you know, how many food myths can they do?

I thought the cooking a dinner using the heat of a car was a fantastic myth. I've seen that sort of thing described before, but I've never seen it shown and never to that degree where they make an entire thanksgiving dinner. The only thing that kind of surprised me was that they didn't show Alton temp'ing the food to make sure it was at a safe serving temperature. (They didn't even reference it during the aftershow when asked. They only talked about the cross-contamination possibilty.)

I'm intrigued about what Alton used for his brine. It was a rather dark brine.

Inspired by this episode, I think they need to do a car myth episode and bring on the guys from Top Gear UK (not the US version, they're really not all that interesting, and they're also not as "hands on" as the UK guys are).

I've wanted one of these for a while. You can do puffed rice or wheat with them too.

Well, at least that way of getting the popcorn out, shooting it into a bag, makes more sense.

I was surprised they didn't use a 18 wheeler cab for the cooking as that's how I usually hear the myth is with truck drivers.

At the start of the AB segment (not the box part, right after that), AB looked utterly perplexed as to what Adam and Jamie were going to have him do. I *always* assume these "up front" segments are scripted and rehearsed (at least a little bit), but either that was genuine, or AB is a really good actor.

I also liked AB's quick line "sure, fly out to the coast, have some fun"... but no, they have him cleaning the grease of the bottom of the car. Hilarious.

He does fit right in, and I'm sure he's on the left coast often enough to schedule more food myths, even if they are re-hashes of stuff he's already done on Good Eats.

Fer chrisakes the Top Gear guys do that all over the world!

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Since we won't have any more new episodes of Good Eats, I love the idea of AB making guest appearances on Mythbusters!

My guess is that they usually do have the police escorts but keep them out of the shot(s)... but in this case, they could not avoid that, so they explained it.

Or it's a new law. Or it's an old law that they got called on/caught and now have to comply.

I liked it the old way.

Could it be that because of one or a combination of missing tags, registration, emissions test, or modifications, it no longer was considered street-legal, but were allowed to drive it with police escort?

That sounds like much to much of a logical and simple reason. It has to be something much more sinister.

Could be they are under an intense microscope after the cannon fiasco.

I agree with LoadStar -- it was probably due to the road-worthiness of the car.

You know that was a Die Hard movie quote, right?

"Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs..."

Without going back and checking I thought he nailed it but he might have said it slightly differently.

Or they were worried about food items falling off the car onto the highway?

It sounded sort of familiar, but if that's so, he's even more awesomerest for that.

Note that Jamie and Adam correctly called AB AL-ton while our humble narrator called him, incorrectly, ALL-ton.

AB was on Craig Ferguson, I'll bet at the same time.

It was hilarious.

AB and Adam could be brothers, at least from the hair line up.

Great episode, but I was hoping AB would be on the entire episode ... I didn't really care for the sub-myths this time around.

Funny. Alton Brown could do a food themed Mythbusters but they already had that show with the guy from Queer Eye.

The difference could be that Alton's would be good.

Food Detectives wasn't terrible, but yeah, an AB/Mythbusters 30-minute show like that would be cool.
