DTV DVRs and Tivo Software?

Reading this forum in search of new info on random reboots and it raised some other questions.

1) Some users list DirecTV DVRS like R10s and others with 6.4 software. Isn't this the same software I'm running on my SD-DVR40 (upgd to 160)?
DTV sent me one of their new units in 2006 and the software was crap (no Season pass, wishlist, etc.
Have things changed? (I called DTV a couple of years ago and the software was the same.)

2) I can't find any info on the coin battery in the Hughes unit. What does it power? Does it have to be change with the power on?

3) What does Clear and Delete do besides clear settings and recordings?
Does it Key a new HD to the unit?

1) Your Hughes SD-DVR40 is also a "Series 2" DirecTivo. The last, and latest, software for all Series 2 DirecTivos is v6.4a.

2) Not sure. Why do you think you need to change that battery? I assume it's a CMOS back up battery like you might find inside your PC.

3) "Clear and Delete Everything" will reformat the hard drive and restore the Tivo to out-of-the-box configuration. You'll need to perform the initial Guided Setup process, which REQUIRES a phone connection. And it will authorize a properly imaged hard drive to work with the Tivo, but you can't just connect a blank unformatted drive.

1) Thanks I'm aware of the latest rev of Tivo for series 2. What is confusing me is what software is DirectTv providing in the DVRs that they came out with?

You list and R10 and and HR10 that have V6.4a in them.
Are these DTV units and did these come from DTV with this software?

When DTV sent me one of their R15 units in 2006 to replace my then failed Hughes it came with non-Tivo software -- no Season Pass, Wishlist, etc.
I called DTV then and have off and on since to see if they have improved and they said they have not.

So I replaced the HDD for the Hughes (I am currently on my 5th -- 2 Maxtor Quickviews and 3 Seagate DB35)

2) Yes the coin battery is just a 3V 2032 and I don't know what it is for but likely CMOS.
When I kept losing HDDs I also bought a NIB Hughes SD-DVR40 as a backup. Since this unit (made 2004) is not powered up the battery voltage is getting low.

3)OK. I learned when bought the backup Hughes that it would not accept my original Hughes/Tivo disk as valid -- what a pisser.
So now to keep from having to take the backup Hughes HDD and copying and expanding to a new bigger HDD as I did with my original can I put the current 160GB Seagate from the original Hughes into the backup -- do a C&D, setup etc, and have it work as a 160BG HDD?

SD-DVR40 V6.4a 160GB Seagate DB35 plus a Seagate clone as backup
SD-DVR40 V? on shelf as backup
Both units made 2004
No Broadband available

1) R10 and HR10-250 are simply other Series 2 DirecTivo model numbers. The HR10-250 was the only HD-capable Series 2 DirecTivo, until the new THR22 HD DirecTivo came out several months ago. All DVRs since the R15 SD DVR have used DirecTV's own software, not Tivo.

Thanks for the clarification.

1) Regarding my two SD-DVR40 units--
If I take the drive out of the master and put in the backup -- do a C&D, etc will system work and still see the drive as a 160GB disk with V6.4a software?

2) The SD-DVR40s seem to very sensitive to minor disk problems. Were the R10s any better? After years of HDD failures causing reboots my master unit seems to have a main control bd problem causing random reboots. (I have tried my clone drive, changed the power supply and cleaned all the connectors.)
Is there any advantage to finding an R10 and switching?

3) Are there any know soft hits to the HDD that can cause the random reboot problem?

You should be able to take the drive out of a SD-DVR40 and put it into another SD-DVR40 and do a Clear and Delete and it will work. I did so with my Mother In Laws unit last year.

Be aware that many DirecTV agents will NOT activate the new SD-DVR40 to your account or send you a card. My MIL had to call 3 or 4 times and ask for a supervisor before they would agree to move her card from the old unit to the new unit w/o cost.

Also there is a guide data problem on the S1 and S2 DTiVos that are causing reboots. This started last week and there is a thread on that topic.

I reverse engineered one of my S4040s in 2007. My notes indicate the CR2032, 220 mAh battery, (mine measured 3.138 VDC, AC off or on) feeds the real time clock.

M41T00
Dec 8, 2006 ... The M41T00 is a low power serial real time clock with a built-in 32.768 ... The M41T00 clock has a built-in power sense circuit which detects ...

"Typical data retention time is in excess of 5 years with a 50 mA/h 3 V lithium cell (see Section 2.10: Data retention mode for AC/DC characteristics)."
