Vegas - Pilot - 09/25/12

Anyone else watch this? Pretty bad acting on Dennis Quaid's part. And what's up with his nose? It never used to be so wide. Is it bad makeup or has he really aged that poorly?

Won't set a season pass for this show. Seems like they are trying to copy Magic City a bit with a period piece, but in the end just another formulaic CBS cop show.

I liked it. I think the biggest suspension of disbelief is that there would be a woman deputy district attorney at that time.

Check Saturday, CBS hyped the premiere so much, it would be worth it for them to rerun it.

I liked but then I'm a sucker for 60's Vegas drama.

Rating were a tad low for it though.
It scored a 2.5 in 18-49.

I watched about half of it and then fell asleep. Maybe it takes a while but I wasn't riveted.

The pilot was ok, nothing spectacular. I'll give it another week, see if it gets more interesting.

That's what I was thinking, every time they did a facial closeup.

Also, can he smile? That scowl is gonna get real tiring after a while.

I thought it was just OK. And that outside shot of a Savoy Casino looked pretty bad.

I was disappointed. It's another CBS cop show with a gimmick behind it. At least that's what the pilot showed. Case of the week, rancher/sheriff solves it. I was hoping for more of a mob story. Maybe that will develop, so I'm giving it another couple of weeks.

I agree - just okay. The critics seemed to like it, but if the pilot is representative of the rest of the season I don't see it lasting.

There was something about it that I liked, probably the actors, but overall it was just okay for me. I totally zoned out whenever they were discussing the case. I don't plan to watch this again.

If I didn't watch the first season of 'Longmire' I probably would have enjoyed it a little more. I kept comparing Dennis Quaid's character to sheriff Longmire.

I thought it was rather engaging, and one of the better new shows so far.

Being network TV it lacks two of the very fine attributes that many enjoy seeing in Magic City. Thought we'd like the 60s period piece and Quaid. Disappointed in both. Wife has tubed the show; I'll give it another shot.

found the pilot to be pretty meh

Did I see things correctly and see Stardust, Sahara, and Golden Nugget all lined up on the same side of the street?

They aren't on the same street. That is if they are currently in the same place as they were originally. The Sahara is on The Strip and The Golden Nugget is downtown.

I'm sure he knows that. He was asking, in the TV show, were they shown on the same street. I didn't notice.

Right. And the Stardust was on the Strip. But NOT on the same side as Sahara.

In the shot I saw, it SEEMED both Sahara and Stardust were on the same side of some road. And it appeared that they showed the Golden Nugget on the same side of the same road too.

was I seeing things? That' what I am asking.

I'd basically say the casino locations in the series are somewhat unrelated to reality...

I skipped around the episode and I could only find a couple seconds around the 4:30 mark where I saw the Sahara and what looks like the Stardust (it is barely legible, but I remember the colors and shape of the sign of the Stardust on the strip). You can only see Sahara and Stardust in the screenshot below, but the car is right next to The Golden Nugget, so it does appear they were all on the same street in this scene.

There may have been an angle on the strip where you could really photograph the Sahara and Stardust signs to look like they do here (although I think they were on opposite sides of the street). But certainly that angle, if it exists, would not be on Fremont St. next to the Golden Nugget. I guess the special effects people just cobbled the background together as a composite.

where's mary and...i rather have that version back. but it's one where i will watch because of vic mackey and the bit of casino action. plus i like the secret service guy from 24

while genuine talk ' of the period' does annoy me sometime (deadwood), i also dont like todays mannerisms interjected into shows like this

This, and that's what disappointed me. I was hoping for more of a 60s mob drama. If it's this ever week, I'm gone.

Are you kidding? When Dennis Quad smiles with his wide grin he looks like a real life Joker. You can see it in some scenes.

Yeah, they used the usual crime drama script outline which will wear on me. Like: His assistants just happen to show up as he's investigating the crime scene to tell him the next 2 or 3 plot points, "Hey boss, mumble mumbly was just found at mumble," even though there are no mobile phones they could have just gotten the scoop on. And they stole the pre-made hole with a plywood cover from Goodfellas, although it's very likely true life. You'd think they'd make the holes further from any road.

I'll stuck with it for a while because the characters could be fleshed out in interesting ways. Then again they could just keep up the cliche's. We'll see.

BTW, "Crime Story" was pretty much the same premise once they got to Vegas, with a much better cop.

I watched the first episode and immediately decided that it would not be watched again, which is a shame considering I like most of the actors in it.
