Premiere slow as molasses without an internet connection ...

Due to a recent Comcast outage, both my internet and TV were down for about 24 hours. During this time, all of my Premieres became super unresponsive and kept freezing while navigating the menus. Ultimately, I was able to watch my pre-recorded shows, but it certainly was a chore. For the record, my older TiVos were fine during the outage. What's the deal? Why do the Premieres perform so badly without an internet connection?

Because it's trying and failing to make all kinds of queries to TiVo servers and it's a terrible design which didn't account for your kind of issue. You are better off switching to SDUI in such events and you wouldn't even notice your internet was down.

Shoot. It didn't even dawn on me to try the SD menus. I did yank the ethernet cable, but it didn't help. My assumption was that if the box didn't sense an ethernet connection that it might be smart enough to not try to load the data. I agree with you that it's a terrible design.

When my FiOS was out for five days from a botched upgrade to the 150/65 tier, my premieres worked fine as long as I didn't try to access something like an episode list that required internet access. I was still able to watch local content, and stream or transfer content from from other boxes without any issue. I just made sure I only accessed the "My SHows" list during that time period since I run the HD menus. It was just as fast as normal except the couple of times at the beginning when I mistakenly tried to access content that needed an internet connection. Then I had to wait 30 seconds to a minute or more before it would back out.

Better resolution of internet issues would be my #1 enhancement, even before having more HD screens. This does seems marginally better through the last few software versions, but is not yet where it needs to be. Walking on eggshells during an interruption (or even when I need to reconfigure something) is very annoying.

This was not my experience at all. The only stuff I attempted to access when my internet was down was pre-recorded content in the "My Shows" list. This resulted in a gut-wrenchingly slow experience making the TiVo barely usable. Bear in mind, my TV was out simultaneously with my internet, so perhaps this exacerbated the problem.
