The Newsroom - 8/12/2012 - The Blackout Part 1: Tragedy, Porn

For the life of me, I can't recall a blackout in NYC in June of 2011.

Nor can I find any mention of one here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_outages#2011

Am I going crazy, or did they just make that up?

If I remember correctly, there was a short power outage in NYC. I am not 100% sure though so I'm trying to find out from others.

But good episode nonetheless.

It's actually "Tragedy Porn," which is an altogether different concept than "Tragedy, Porn"!

Its possible the blackout was building specific. I wondered if it was the whole city, but could not recall if that had happened.

I enjoyed this episode quite a bit. I am amused we are already getting a payoff for Charlie's phone call from the 5/1 episode. I thought that would be milked into a season cliffhanger. It looks like Reese(sp?) is going to have his own scandal real soon.

I know people have complained about Olivia Munn's ability to act. I personally have had no issue with it. Until last night when she slammed the blogger kid on the wall. I realize writing determines the what an actor is going to do and it is the actor who is going to figure out how to do it, but that scene was way over the top and I thought it was just awful. Could another actress have made it better? I don't know.

And how does Maggie have less seniority than interns? I understand she has been there for a shorter period of time but does a promotion to AP not buy you some power over interns?

I was kind of amused at the "passing the buck" thing, but rationally I thought "If your boss tells you to do something you do it! you don't pass it off."

ETA: Regarding the timing of the blackout, during heat waves like that there are always brownout and blackouts going on. I don't think they would be necessarily documented anywhere, especially of it was localized. And since it's a fictional studio in a fictional building, I'll give them some literary latitude in that regards.

Charlie warned da boss to back off without saying why.

Imagine now: She fires Wil. Charlie gives the go code to nail the S.O.B. (Son Of the Boss) on the hacking scandal.

Will gets rehired after "a sabbatical."

She can't fire them with the spotlight on. Congressional investigations. Harumph. Harumph. Criminal charges. Son resigns as President "to spend more time with his family." Money triumphs.

She puts a task on her calendar to fire them all and screw them to death in 3 years.

How many more episodes are there in this season? Is it a 12 episode run?

ETA: I was really irritated with MacKenzie this week. Just SO self righteous and SO whiney about it.

I believe it's only 10 episodes. So season finale in two weeks (on the 26th).

Looks like that one hit CT, NJ and Long Island, but no outages in NYC, let alone Manhattan. But I guess that's just a little dramatic license on Sorkin's part.

And they specifically talked about heat waves causing blackouts.

I know that every time there was a blackout in my old building, it never made the news. Even though several city blocks near downtown Minneapolis were dark for hours, including traffic lights on a major artery in. It's just not that big a deal when there's a local blackout, no matter how traumatic it may seem to those in the locality.

(They finally redid the electrical grid in that neighborhood. Right around the time I moved from there to here.)

That gave me pause at first. I decided then that they were no longer interns, but were referencing their intern hiring date as their seniority date, despite being real employees now.

I can't believe that in 2011 there would be an executive producer of a national news organization who doesn't know what a troll is. That doesn't compute.

Or, that a news outfit would have to be talked into covering a tabloid story. What news today isn't tabloid?

Unbelievable as it sounds, there are people who just don't spend their lives on internet discussion boards. Most of them are just too busy with work/lives.

As to wanting to cover the tabloid story, well that was the entire point of the episode. If you don't get it, you'll probably never get it.

I get that it was the point Sorkin was trying to make, but do you really think that argument would take place in such depth when every other news source on the planet is covering a particular story? I know it's just a TV show, but that's not realistic.

Remember, however, that this is not a show about a TV news network. This is a show about a TV new network as it should be, but isn't in the real world.

He's setting up a Platonic ideal of a TV news network (or more accurately, a Sorkinian ideal), just as he did with a presidential administration in West Wing.

I have a number of friends who have worked in newsrooms; some for print, some for radio, and some for TV. Without exception, they have all made it clear that nothing about this show bears any resemblance to any newsroom in the real world.

(I realize the show needs to seem real on it's own terms, however.)

Yes, I do see that Sorkin is pointing out an ideal. And, maybe because it's still Newroom's first season, maybe because of the actors, but the scripts in West Wing always felt more plausible and grounded.

And, I know it's not fair to compare them, but it's hard not to.

He's creating a newsroom the way that I want it to be. I'm saying me as average guy who is sick of the infotainment that gets passed around as news.

Kind of spoilerish. Since we know that such new Presidential debate does not exists, we can guess that the Newsroom got tired of compromising their integrity, and goes back to their old self, losing the debate format.

We also know that is going to happen because Sorkin already did it in The American President. Just replace "debate" with "crime bill".

Or, if they ffwd through time faster than they have been, they could still get the debate, ahead of debates here in the real world. Maybe a well done example could get some people scratching their heads about how it could ( or should ) be done.

Of course if it was really a good format, no candidate would agree to do it.

Keep in mind that I think they're talking about getting one of the GOP Presidential Primary debates, not the upcoming Obama/Romney debates.

Heh. I got into hot water many years ago when I replied to "Isn't a TiVo just a fancy VCR?" with "You Troll!" I've been accused of calling her an ugly beast that lives under a bridge ever since.

Sorkin hung out at MSNBC with Larry O'Donnell for a few days. That was his research.

The cute blonde actress also used to have the job of the character she plays at MSNBC, and in fact was originally hired as a consultant.
