Clip Recordings

I have some 10+ hour olympic recordings that I'd like to clip several hours off the start or end of. Is there any way to clip recordings using the Tivo box?

I'm trying to stay away from doing lots of transferring and converting especially considering the size of the files, but if I can't do it within the Tivo what's the next easiest way?

Nope, no way to do it on Tivo, unfortunately. This is something I'd pay money for, though I realize it's of little use to most people.

You don't have to "convert", btw, you can edit the MPEG files directly. (They only have to be 'decoded', but that isn't reconverting them.)

You can edit the shows after you download them and decode from the .tivo to .mpg file using VideoReDo if you are using windows. It is similar to editing out commercials, but instead of commercials, you would be removing the unwanted content. If you are worried that the original file will get cropped, it won't, because VRD will make another file with the wanted content, original is untouched. Then if you want to watch the cropped version, they can be sent back to the Tivo in the .mpg format.

Right, and I kind of understanding not having functionality to easily cut and splice out commercials as it would upset advertisers, providers, ect.

But I'm just talking about cutting 7 hours off the end of a 10 hour recording so I can keep an event I want and free up 7 hours of HD space.

Maybe a compromise could be adding the functionality to clip a recording but not splicing them together so it couldn't really be used for commercials.

If you have two TiVos you can kind of accomplish this. Just FF the show to the point you want to clip to start, then go to the other TiVo and transfer the video from the paused location. Once the show has transferred past the point you want the clip to end stop it. You now have a shorter clip of the recording.
