Burn Notice - "Shock Wave" - OAD 7/26/2012

This episode really delivered in the last few minutes!

Previews told us one of the team wouldn't make it and watching the episode I think we were intended to think it might be Sam, seeing as how he and Barry were in a pretty dicey situation. Right, like they'd really get rid of Bruce Campbell. However, I think they foreshadowed Nate's demise by how he repeatedly interfered despite Michael's warnings (clearing out the party goers at the hotel, having pizza delivered). When he took down Anson so easily, it seemed obvious things were going to take a turn for the worse.

The scene where Nate and Anson (and the sign) got a hole blown in 'em was well done. I liked how they first showed the blood splatter on Nate's face, then he slowly collapsed, and then they panned back showing Anson's body.

Nice conclusion. Anson is dead. Nate's death will certainly push Michael even farther towards the edge. Fi is out of prison and back with the gang.

The last couple of episodes have been much better.

Remember that it was "leaked" that one cast member was going to buy it and we guessed it would be Nate. I guess we were supposed to think with "Sam, you can't go." it could have been Sam getting killed but I was not on the edge of my seat for him. Lessee, experienced Sam Axe, former Seal officer is out but Nate Westen, spy brother, is welcome?

How many times have we had our heroes holed up with no weapons or resources while the heavily armed posse of bad guys in one or more SUVs wait at the end of the driveway, holding off the big attack until the last commercial break, while our heroes improvise countermeasures, 5 6, 7 or 8, more times?

Except that we once more have the guy behind the guy behind the guy behind the organization behind the guy... Who fired the fatal shot?

And we have MI6 on Fi's trail for future hijinks. Hint: Fi will be in Michael Westen's loft.

The stupid is that the CIA doesn't buy that Anson was the bad guy so Fi had to stay in jail to answer for the bomb, but they want Anson so bad, they'll mount an operation to get him? And just before this, Fi had to "prove her loyalty to the CIA" to get out of prison. MI6 is holding Fi's family over her. That's the first time we've seen that, too.

Mike: "I want to use my team."
"No! No Sam!... We'll use our team...and your brother Nate, ...and Jesse Porter"

How about if Pierce called the Miami PD to back up Nate at the airport?

And for time #111 Michael Westen tells Pierce that he ran a rouque operation and gathered information that he didn't share to save his team/family. He still has the clean bill of health security clearance.

Hey, hey, HEY! They had BACON after all! C'mon, no weapons or resources indeed. Oh, and beer...

This was on my mind from the moment we saw the shot. Who killed Anson? I thought he was supposed to at the center of the conspiracy. All those layers that Michael had to peel away to reach Anson were rewarded by his finally getting to the core. Now it seems that there might be more layers yet?!? this show is getting too much like Wagontrain, always going, but never arriving.

That whole contradictory thing was a rather poorly constructed plot device. Don't apply logic to the series, it will inevitably lead to disappointment.

So now we need to find out who was pulling Anson's strings.

Maybe Anson was killed by Rebecca (or her brother).

And come on, you just knew that there had to be another layer behind Anson, that is this show's raison d'etre

I spent half the episode wondering why Sam and Barry didn't just sneak out the back door. It's not like the bad guys were in any kind of hurry.

Nate being on the mission made no sense. Pierce had to have at least one flunky who could have done what Nate did. Mike getting mad at Nate for ordering pizza made no sense to me either. Who orders pizza at a motel? Everybody who has ever stayed at a motel. How could that look suspicious to Anson?

I hope Fi's prison buddy gets out and helps the team in a future episode. I liked that character. I don't like Fi's darker hair though. Or maybe it's longer or something. I don't know. I'm a guy. I just know I don't like it.

I guess that casino had no security. Nate sucker punched Anson and held a gun on him and nobody showed up to see what was going on. They even let him hold the gun on Anson outside.

They weren't very clear on the geography, but it was a lake house and I think the driveway was the only way out...

...
...which is how Mike always got out of the same situation the last 37 times, after he turns the microwave into a time bomb.

As above, the bad guys are never in a hurry to go down the driveway, or cover the back door.

So I wonder how long Michael's mother will blame him for Nate's death?

Using Jesse as precedent, I'd say not long at all.

Nate was pretty useless so I hope they don't drag out the mourning period more than a couple of episodes.

Though I have no doubt that's the direction the showrunners will go toward, it isn't necessary that there was someone above him. Anson had many people that have helped him stay ahead of Michael. Its only reasonable to assume that one of these people wanted him dead so he doesn't sell them out (imagine if it was someone at CIA, like Rebecca).

The rest of this season could be "tracking the guy that killed Nate" -- there doesn't have to be another uber-conspiracy (although the show runners would have to change the dynamic of the show, and they don't seem to be intersted in doing that). Between that and MI-6 trying to take down Fi they have enough "meta-plot" for at least this season.

My question is: What kind of weapon can blow a hole in a concrete sign after passing through 2 bodies?

I believe that a 50 cal Barrett could go through two bodies and a concrete sign fairly easily - especially for a close (say 1000 foot) range for that rifle.

In the opening, Mike describes Jesse as a "down and out spy you met along the way" or something like that. He should have said "down and out spy who's life I ruined".

Yeah, it has been mentioned before. I think the line should be, "a perfectly good spy that you accidentally burned yourself along the way."

I guess they are rewriting history on the show.

The inconsistencies in the show are there and I just ignore them. I mean, in reality, they should be arrested just about every show. They've blown up half of Miami by now. It's fun escapist stuff and after a slow start to the season, it's back to being fun again.

When they leaked someone from the team was going to buy it last week, I assumed it was going to be the blonde lady who was Anson's flunky but joint Michael's team to get him. Then watching this past episode, I just forgot about that until the end when the Bro bought it. I think it's either the blonde lady or her brother that offed Anson (and Nate).

I do love every episode that Barry is in. He cracks me up.
