The merge script to merge two recordings also requires the mwstate fix. As do quite a few other things. IIRC the US users had software version 2.5.2, then we had our v2.5.5 and later on they had v3.0.
There were hardly any changes between 2.5.5 and 3.0, but the mwstate fix was one of them, and TiVo considered it important enough to do a full software release at the time.
I tried the screen module and it was quite fun for a few minutes but I did find it unreliable and it caused random reboots, so quickly disabled it again
