Considering Upgrade to Premiere XL4

I am in the Boston market and given the update re: On Demand I am considering upgrading from my series 3 HD to the Premiere XL4.

I did have a question. I remember having a terrible time getting the cable card up and running and paired with Comcast way back when I first got the HD.

With the XL4 is it simply a matter of removing the cable card from the HD and plugging it into the XL4, or do you have to go through a whole set up process again?

Thanks for any help/advice!

I just made exactly this change here in TWC country. I had an m-card in my S3 & moved it to the new XL4. I called the 800 number I got off the TWC web site and within 5 minutes (including hold time) they paired the cablecard & we were done.

I had already done guided setup (it has an option to install the cablecard later). I also manually connected three times so I had gotten the latest TiVo software distribution. But everything was smooth with TWC.

None of the grief associated with installing my S3 (5 years ago).

Good luck.

I recently did exactly what your are thinking of doing!

1. The Series 3 cards (2 cards) are not compatible with the XL4 (1 card)
2. You need a M Card (multi stream); I drove over to the local Comcast office and picked it up and did a self install - SIMPLE
3. I just pulled down the Xfinity update to my XL4 - provides OnDemand (Nashua/Boston area)
4. Cable boxes going back to Comcast TODAY, along with the old S3 cable cards

Good luck!

I think that I have an M card, because I have only 1 card and can record on 2 tuners at once!

You may be right, My S3 was an original unit, not an HD branded one...

How are you liking the Premiere XL4 so far? I've heard a couple spotty reviews but also a lot of positive stuff. I can't imagine that it's not an improvement over the HD when you include the 4 tuners, On-Demand access etc. I don't really have a ton of use for the Netflix/Youtube/Hulu streaming at this time but would like the multiple tuners and On Demand.

Also is the XL4 the same thing as the elite? I'm not sure on the difference but see both names

I had planned to take full advantage of the 30-day trial, but after just a few days I was hooked. S3 is retired.

The HD interface (even with a few gaps here and there) is very nice, the guide, PIP and other assorted features are all good updates. Lag is there, but nothing was not already accustomed to in my old S3. It is by no means a show stopper for me.

4 tuners is the clincher - MOT cable box was already going back with the addition of this XL4 (used the MOT box as a "live" 3rd tuner); today's OnDemand addition is just gravy.

I've had none of the rebooting, channel issues as posted by others here...

Your S3 *possibly* had M cards anyway. Do you still have your S3? I am interested in one for parts, to repair my dead S3 (with lifetime).

This is a Partial Rebranding technique adopted by the company. The brand basically stays the same – it is just “updated” or becomes more aesthetically pleasing. The TiVo DVR comprises of the Premiere, the dual-tuner Premiere XL, and the quad-tuner Premiere Elite also called as Premiere XL4. The first two are suitable for over-the-air programming, while the latter is limited to those with cable or FiOS subscriptions.
