Dancing with the Stars 5/21/2012 and 5/22/2012 Finale with Spoilers for both nights

There haven't been many threads this season, so thought I'd start one for both nights of the finals. So be warned that it's allowed to discuss the winner in this thread as soon as announced Tuesday!

I've been watching off and on all season. Not dedicated, but enough to keep up and pick favorites. I'm thrilled to see William/Cheryl and Katherine/Mark (well, no so much Mark, but I love Katherine) in the finals. I'm not much of a Donald fan, but he is a good dancer.

So basically, I'm happy with the final three. They are all very entertaining.

I thought Maria would be in the Finals instead of Donald, but as Len would say, Donald knocked my socks off last night with that country-inspired freestyle. I would prefer Katherine or William, but I wouldn't mind any of the three winning.

Stopped watching when Maria got kicked out. There's no way William's tango was in the same league as Maria's (sure, Derek's choreography had a lot to do with it but she more than kept up). Should have been at least a 3 point spread but, of course, when it comes to the last 4 the judges give out 10s like candy at Halloween.

They are planning on doing an all-stars DWTS. I think a better one would be top-five finishers who went home too early. With a final featuring Gilles and Maria. That's right, a *final* should have two competitors, not three.

Well, if you want to see particular people in the all-star season, get your booty over to abc.com and vote for your favorites.

I know some of you don't like Mark Ballas, but jeez, that freestyle of Katherine's was freakin' difficult, and she nailed it.

When it comes down to the final two, it's all about the fan base, so I expected Katherine would get screwed at the end.

How about Roshon and Chelsie's killer freestyle?

I guess when there's no judging involved people dance better. In particular Gladys Knight and Jack Wagner.

I'm happy with the results.

Katherine was better, sure. But between her lack of US fan base, the hatred of all things Ballas, and the overly dramatic faces she seemed unable to control I think she did just fine in the voting category.
Honestly I'm surprised she lasted as long as she did.

I don't really get Peta's personality at all but it was nice to see both Ballas and Hough shut down in the same season.

I noticed that in his last comments Tom said something about the All-Star season "shaking things up."
Makes me wonder if some of them will be switching partners?
There are only so many pros and obviously depending on which celebs return there might be some hard choices happening. I'd bet it is an organizational nightmare as I think at least a few celebs return would be conditional on their getting the partner they want- whether it is the same one or "anyone but..."

I have mixed feelings about that, but until they call and ask my opinion I guess waiting and seeing is all I can do.

For me, the thing that made this season boring to me was the fact that all the "celebrities" were pretty decent or downright great dancers from the beginning. So if next season is all-stars (more people who start out with a lot of ability) I for one will be bored. It's the bad dancers sprinkled in with the good that make me want to watch.

Because you like watching bad dancing, because there's more room for 'growth', or because sometimes the worst dancers are having the most fun?

A celeb who looks as if they are having fun during their dance trumps everything for me.
Yes, I want them to work hard and behave decently and perform well, but for those seconds they are dancing I want them to transcend their fear and enjoy it.
That's why I enjoyed Kelly Osbourne so much and why I did not like Melissa Gilbert at all.

I think there's a lot to be said about the "fish out of water" aspect of the show and watching them improve as the weeks go on. "All-star" celebs already know what to expect and thus I think next season will have quite a bit of a different feel to it. We'll just have to see who's coming back.

I agree with all of this!

Count me in the camp that dislikes Mark, but I was rooting for Katherine. But I'm not disappointed that Donald won. I like Peta. I think she did a great job. Was this her first season?

I'm not sure about the All Stars season. The thing I'm afraid of is who will be returning. I hate when they (Tom especially) gets on the soap box preaching that the only reason Sabrina was booted so early is because people thought everyone would vote for her so no one did. Um, that's sure not the case with me. I didn't vote for her because I didn't like her. I think there were a lot of people who felt the same way I did. Just because she could dance well doesn't mean she deserved to be there. Being likeable and entertaining is a big part of it as well. OTOH I voted for Cloris every week because she kept me entertained. So I'd love to see her back again. I know we don't all agree on who we like and who we think deserves to be there, but this my opinion. YMMV.

I lied. I watched. But only because my wife insisted.

I liked Katherine, and I thought she started the routine great, but there were some rough spots later on. I didn't think it deserved 10s.

Mark just shows off too much rather than making sure his star gets shown off.

Donald's dance was fun, but man, was it ever rough! Looked like they *both* needed another couple of days to practice it. And when they did the encore it was even rougher than the night before -- and my wife, who usually doesn't like to criticize, and who *liked* that dance best, agreed with me.

Roshon was dissed by the judges the whole time he was there. So what if he is skinny and young? Kid's got more moves than some of the pros out there and deserved better scores than he routinely received. Not saying he would have won. Their freestyle was great, if a bit short.

I think this expresses my dislike of Mark very well. To me he always seems to try to get the attention himself rather than showcasing his partner. He's not the star, but I feel like he *thinks* he is/should be.

I don't disagree that Mark showboats too much, but he is not from the only pro that makes this mistake, and IMHO he is not the worst offender in the cast.

Look at all the dance routines we've seen over the years, where the guy is merely a prop for Edyta.

In Edyta's case, at least to this layperson, it seems as if her dancing around the men is because 1) the men can't dance and 2) she is trying to distract us from #1.
Mark dances (again, to me a layperson) full out competition overdrive even when his celeb is schlumping along at half speed.

I would contrast this with Derek who seems to reel in his showboaty tendencies in order to match his partners level of incompetence and so we don't notice their lagging as much.
Not that I like Derek- I think he is a master at choreographing around weaknesses and showing off his partners strengths, but he often comes off as sort of a jerk.
Mark is just the jerk part without all Derek's other attributes.

I'd like to not see either of them for a couple of years.
Find us more pros like Tristan who is supportive and nurturing instead of using "airtime for Tristan" as an opportunity to further promote himself.
I mean appearing on the show alone is promotion but he seems so much more low key and like a real person instead of a ballroom diva.
Or whatever the equivalent word is for a man.

True. But somehow I didn't mind. I wonder why?

I wonder what Edyta's been up to? Did she leave on her own or was she not renewed?

Edit: Ah, so this is what she's been up to: http://www.mobypicture.com/user/Edyt.../view/12807751

I wanted to get back to this post because I think (once again) you nailed it.

Steve Jobs was horrible, but he was having so much fun. On the other hand, a show full of people that bad would be awful.

I also liked Carson's dance to "Moves Like Jagger". As bad as the rest of his dancing might have been, he really threw himself into it, and tried hard to do the Mick Jagger strut.

The really sad thing for me is, no matter how good the dances get technically, no one has been able to match my favorite part of Season One.

There was something magical about John O'Hurley dancing with Charlotta Jorgensen. They clicked right away -- they were partners -- where everyone else on the floor were just two people on the floor at the same time.* Charlotta took full advantage of the fact that she was working with an actor, and every dance (no matter how strong or weak John's technique might have been) correctly expressed the character of the dance. There was never any doubt about what dance it was supposed to be.

She set the bar for choreographing routines that were the best to show off her student -- consistent week after week. Other pros have done great routines, but no one else has been that consistent.

For the smooth dances -- especially the waltz and foxtrot -- there may be loads of celebs who are better technically, but most of the time, if you gave me a choice, I'd rather be watching John and Charlotta.

*The only "instant partnership" I've seen since then which was anything like that, was Russell Ferguson and Iveta Lukosuite's cha-cha during Vegas week of SYTYCD. They had what, 90 minutes to rehearse?

That's what I want from all these shows. That magic. (P.S. SYTYCD auditions are showing up in my to-do list.)

I guess the celebs dont get paid very much for doing the show. People magazine just had a report that William Levy's house was forclosed on for oweing $20,000 in back payments.

I certainly can't disagree that Mark showboats too much. I yell at the screen every time he does. But I don't think he's "trying to get the attention himself": I think that's just the way he dances. He simply doesn't bother trying to "reel it in". And it detracts from the performance every time.

Derek is such a good choreographer that I forgive his skinny-boy showboats.

I was a little surprised that Donald won. I wouldn't expect him to have a fan base: I follow football (tho mostly Dallas and Atlanta), and I don't ever remember hearing his name. I guess none of the final three really had a big US fan base. I thought William would win based on the audience squealing alone.

I have often wondered why she never came back for another season- have you heard anything about that?

IMO she was class. A mature, adult woman who just exuded charm and refinement. Most of the other lady pros are so young, or so hoochie mama, or so gregarious while she just appeared and wafted around in a cloud of pure elegance.
She suited O'Hurley perfectly.

I liked her a lot.
