Smash - S01E13 - Tech - 04/30/2012

WTF?!?! Derek banging Uma came completely out of left field. I mean, yeah, we know he's supposed to be a sleaze in general, but there was absolutely zero setup for that to happen.

And I didn't think it possible, but the actor playing Shrek and Grace's son is actually becoming a worse actor over the course of the season.

Somebody remind me... I know that Karen's boyfriend doesn't know who Ivy is, but does Ivy know who Karen's boyfriend is? Is she targeting him on purpose?

You could tell at the end that they hadn't realized who the other was, but recognized the other's name...

For us, this is quickly sliding into the Glee style of TV watching. FF until it looks like someone is singing, back it up a little bit and see if it's worth watching or not. Anjelica is still gross, and when the bartender says something to insinuate it's going to be a long night of intimacy I dry heaved a little bit. I sure hope they don't go too much further into soap opera, seems to me that's the lazy writer's way out.

Ok, I swear to you I just watched this but this thread has me all kinds of confused.

Derek & Rebecca? Did that happen and I didn't see it?

What's this with Ivy & Dev?

We saw them kiss in her dressing room. Later, Ivy runs into evil Ellis backstage and she's surprised that he's not at his post---that is, listening outside Rebecca's door to make sure that she's not involved with Derek. Ellis and Ivy run up to Rebecca's dressing room and find Rebecca's assistant outside and he tells them to go away. We hear sounds coming from the dressing room, but never see them. Ivy leaves, looking upset.

They're in the dressing room. She's in a chair and Derek's behind her with his hands on her shoulders, looking at her in the mirror and giving her encouraging words. Next thing you know, she stands up and turns around, and then they start kissing. It was rather abrupt.

What's this with Ivy & Dev?
Ivy was expecting to meet up with Derek that evening, but he's busy banging Rebecca in the dressing room, so she goes to the theater to see where he is. She runs into Ellis and asks him why he isn't "at his post" and he says that they had sent him off on an errand. They both suddenly realize what's going on and rush up the stairs, only to be held off by Rebecca's assistant who tells them that "she is not to be disturbed", even though they can hear the giggling coming through the dressing room door. Ivy puts 2+2 together and goes off and gets drunk at a cast room party at the hotel.

Meanwhile... Dev proposes to Karen, and she's says "you can't propose to me during Tech, this is all too much, blah blah blah, I need to go process this", and she leaves.

Karen, looking for someone to talk to, stumbles upon the room party at the hotel and gets sucked into it. Ivy, now drunk, tells Karen that Rebecca and Derek are banging, and she accuses Karen of knowing about it (since she's Rebecca's BFF now) and not telling Ivy about it.

Dev comes by the hotel, looking for Karen, and sees her at a party and gets upset at her for partying it up instead of "processing" his proposal. They get into an argument, and Dev mentions the job in DC that he sacrificed for her "stupid show", and then he mentions RJ, and Karen says "why don't you just go an be with RJ" and Dev tells her that he already was with her, but he couldn't go through with it. Karen gets upset and leaves.

At the end of the episode, Dev is in a bar, sadly nursing a drink when a girl comes and sits beside him and starts flirting it up. The girl is Ivy. He buys her a drink and the strong implication is that they are probably going to go off and sleep together.

My question is whether or not Ivy is knowingly targeting Karen's BF as revenge for Ivy's belief that Karen knew about Rebecca and Derek and didn't tell her about it.

Just rewatched that scene...

Ivy sings her song, then gets up and walks wistfully to the window/wall opposite the door to the room. Then Dev shows up, standing in the hall looking through the door, sees the party, makes eye contact with Karen then walks away.

There's nothing to indicate that Ivy saw Dev or that Dev saw Ivy at that moment. If anything, the suggestion is that Ivy's back is probably to the door when Dev arrives and leaves.

The best part of the episode though, for NYC-area viewers at least, is what happened in the transition to the local 11pm news.

We hear anchor Sue Simmons in the middle of a conversation saying "the ball took a bad hop and hit me in the breast", followed by her co-anchor saying, "Are we on?", and then going into their intro routine.

I thought it was that the cast went to Grand Central Station to take a train to Boston when all NY-ers know the train to Boston leaves from Penn.

OMG - I was JUST coming in here to say that! There is NO train from Grand Central that goes to Boston! You need to take Amtrak from Penn.

I can understand the artistic license, however. Grand Central is one of the most beautiful buildings in NYC.

Penn Station is a pit.

That's right, I forgot about that! During the Grand Central scene, my GF, who's only lived here in NYC for about a year now, was like, "uh... wait a minute...."

Ok, I wanted to give them a chance, and maybe, just MAYBE, that Rebecca Duvall would end up being a remotely passable Marilyn. But wow... no, just no. She can't sing, she can't sound like Marilyn, and she clearly doesn't look a thing like her, even in all the Marilyn costuming and the wig. Seriously, I get the appeal of casting a big movie star... but really, was Rebecca (and for that matter, Uma) really the only actress available?

I don't mind the whole Eileen/Bartender thing. I think "gross" is a bit excessive. No, I'm not attracted to her, but I don't think she's hideous or anything. But as far as I'm concerned, beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, and I never try and explain why some people are attracted to others. Besides, you never know if he's attracted to her for reasons other than her physical appearance. (And besides, I think the biggest issue is that severe wig-like hairstyle she wears.)

I didn't get why Ivy made that comment as if she thought Karen knew about Derek and Rebecca. other than just simple paranoia.

I get that Derek is the producer, so in the end it all is his responsibility... but in reality, I'm pretty certain that everything he did during this episode, all the shouting about light cues and making tweaks to the light plot, would be the lighting designer's job, not the producer's. (Yeah, I know, this show does tend to overly simplify the theater on many occasions... this is one that jumped out at me, having worked closely with many lighting designers.)

Derek is the director, not producer. Angelica Huston is the producer.

Absolutely everything that happens on stage is the director's call. The lighting designer would be directly under the director in the chain of command and he would have the responsibility of manifesting the director's vision with regard to the lighting, but in the end it's the director that calls the shots.

All the things Derek was doing in relation to putting on the show was completely appropriate for him to be doing.

So here's the thing: I'm an idiot.

I read the first couple of posts explaining it all and it rang NO bells. Then I turned the tivo back on and discovered I'd only watched the first twenty minutes.

This entire series is pretty convoluted and contrived, but last episode really took it up a notch.

Why are any of you surprised by any of this?
This has been the direction the series has been headed since Derek started banging Ivy.

With this episode, my fears about a show I had reservations about watching, but did anyway because of everyone here's glowing reviews, have come true. I think this show has became Grey's Anatomy on Broadway. A once interesting premise, behind the scenes of the creation of a Broadway musical, has become a soap opera. Really, I'm ok with the back stabbing and the games played to get this or that one into or out of the musical, and I can even tolerate the "break into song' thing (which from the early reviews said wasn't going to happen), but when they all start sleeping with each other, it's just too much. I'll probably finish out the season but I don't know if I'll be back for next. If it wasn't for seeing Katherine McPhee in tights every week, I might have already quit
