If they are store bought movies, they will most likely have Macrovision. Not sure if a DVD recorder will bypass that signal cleanly.

I would just replace the movies I really love with DVDs and be done with it.

Great idea, this should have been standard practice with all BDs since day one. We have a BD player in the home theater but DVD players elsewhere like my daughters little combo dvd tv, my son's PC, the cars, and in the 4 laptops that aren't being phased out anytime soon.

If you don't want the DVDs you could probably sell the pristine DVD season set for more than the any extra cost of the box set.

And that might be the problem from the studio's point of view...they're selling two copies of the show, but only getting paid for one.

I need to work on VHS tapes that I have that are not movies and probably don't have copy protection.

If those are home movies, they're irreplaceable. I would definitely back those up onto DVDs.
