I have already decided to kick Tivo to the curb once my 1 year "contract" is up. The slowness is unbearable!

The lack of a response to this issue from any Tivo representative speaks volumes.

Unless there is a fix for this issue - or at least a public response from one of the Tivo reps who frequent this forum, I plan to replace my two Tivo units (240 and Humax) with a Vista-based media center solution. I am well aware that I'll be giving up the friendliest UI and the appliance-like stability of the standalone Tivo but I refuse to keep paying monthly service fees while the quality of the Tivo "experience" deteriorates with each new OS update.

In my opinion, Tivo is jumping the shark.

Both my 240 S2 w/300Gb drive and 540 S2 w/200Gb drive are extremely slow since 7.3.0

Suggestion: Mail in your complaint

To those of you who have been suffering since the latest software rollout I have a suggestion that may accelerate TiVo's response (and acknowledgement) to this issue.

I handled a similar issue back with the rollout of version 7.2 (remember the "stuttering" problem?) by printing out the entire thread (http://archive2.tivocommunity.com/ti...d.php?t=256983) and mailing it in to them. Yes, I know that snail mail is frustrating and it may take some work but believe it or not, this simple action actually seemed to get a reply from their "executive support team".

On page two of the thread you can see the letter that I composed to them and their suprisingly timely response.

If one or multiple people experiencing this "slowness" glitch follow the same procedure I did (coincidentally, exactly one year ago to the day), this issue may get resolved quicker than expanding this thread one post at a time.

That's great. Hopefully others will follow your lead and maybe, just maybe, we'll get some sort of acknowledgement.

Smile Slowness problem solved

This post would be more helpful if I was able to include the URL in the quote above. Instead you'll have to search the beginning of this thread for unixb0y's post for the actual URL.

Just wanted to let others know that following the Pause 57 procedure mentioned in unixb0y's post solved the slowness problem for me. I got the green screen that indicated that a serious error was detected and would take three hours to fix. In fact it took less than half an hour (maybe less than 15 minutes) and I didn't lose any recordings, Season Passes, or Wish Lists. I am now getting normal response to my TiVo remote. No more 5-second delays in response to pressing the Info or Guide button, for example, which is what was happening after I got the 7.3.1 update on my Series 2.

You are a brave man, sir. Many a TiVo doesn't make it past that green screen of death. (GSOD) Mine didn't and I had to get a new hard drive.

i just did the same with both of my 540s and they finished in about 1/2 hour as well. i can't say that it 'solved' the slowness problem as they're still not a quick as my 649, but they are faster than they were before doing the 'Pause 57 procedure'.

My understsanding is that TiVo is well aware of the problem and is working towards a resolution. The difficulty is that there is wide variation, with two seemingly identical TiVos behaving in very different ways, making it hard to track down.

Angry

<bump>

Just came to the forum to research this issue. Like many others have reported, I was chalking it up to dying batteries in my remote. However, I just tested the batteries and they were OK. So now I was starting to expect the worst (dying HD) and came to the forum for a little research and solace.

Looks like I found my solace. Although my S240 is now almost 3 years old, the behavior I'm experiencing seems much more consistent with what is described as post 7.3.1 behavior than HD dying.

All the same, I think I'm going to put my TiVo into maintenance this weekend and put the HDs through a Spinrite cycle to be certain...

I can certainly appreciate that the problem is difficult to track down. I do this kind of deep dive support work for my day job at a telecom company... but I'm a little surprised the TiVo (and especially TivoPony) are pretty mum on the subject or in responding to this thread.

I have to say I've certainly been less and less satisfied with my TiVo as it has grown slower and slower lately. Had I been a new subscriber I may very well have cancelled my service and eBay'd the box. As it is, when my S240 does bite it I'm probably switching to MythTV where I'm a little more in control of software upgrades and their impact, timing, etc...

An increasingly dissatisfied TiVo owner...

Add my Tivo to the List

You can add my Tivo Series 2 to the list of really slow machines. It's getting to be very very annoying.

I am going to try and mail something out tomorrow.

I'm getting set to give it the boot and switch to time warner DVR with digital cable, it'll give me an excuse to get an HD tv

I attempted oto edit my posting to contain the full URL. When editing, it has the complete URL. After saving, it has an ellipses (...) right in the middle of it, which renders it invalid. This is probably the same problem Richard was having in posting the URL.

Go to page 1 of this thread and navigate to the 5th posting from the bottom. Click directly on the URL there.

Add one more to the list. The first few times I noticed it, I thought it was recording while I was going through menus but I later determined that it is just full time slower than before.

Maybe they could announce a great new 'feature' where the "kidzone" stuff has been sacked and performance re-issued to the boxes.

And if that wasn't the specific cause they could sack whatever added feature(s) is the cause of this.

Not only is my S2 slow, but it stutters really bad. I transferred a show from our wireless networked Tivo to my Tivo. I could not watch it because it would play for 1 second, and pause for 10, I coudn't take it and deleted the show.

I'm going to try the fix mentioned in the link.

One of my s-l-o-w Model 130's spontaneously rebooted when I took it out of standby this morning, so I figured what the heck, let's try the "Pause 57" procedure. The "green screen of death" disappeared after only 15 minutes (which surprised me, since this TiVo has two 120 GB drives). This TiVo has been performing much faster since!

My S2 540080 is hit and miss. Somedays it's incredibly slow, other days it's pretty fast. There just isn't any consistency with it. That's the part that's frustrating. You never know how it's going to react.

It's been roughly a month, and I sent a copy of this thread with a note, but have not heard from anyone at Tivo. Has there been any progress or word on this issue?

Have you seen that there is an Open Beta going on right now? Some people have gotten the software without signing up for the beta, and they have said that there's a mention of performance improvement. When the open beta is complete, we'll all get to see if this is the case.

My Tivo seems a lot faster these days. I looked at the version and I still have 7.3.1, so I am not sure why it is faster. Pressing the Tivo button makes the menu come up in about a seond or two rather than the 5 seconds it use to take. The guide button has gotten a lot faster, from about 10 seconds to 2 or 3 seconds.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I have a 540 box.

In addition to the slowness, is anybody else seeing a stutter here and there? I've only seen two people mention that in this thread. Our stutters may happen once or twice during a show, or not at all... We're wondering if this is related, or if it's our TiVo going bad. Or maybe the cable company .

Last night I was thinking the same thing. The menu comes up much quicker, although I still get the double button press issue frequently. I am on the same version as well and have not rebooted the Tivo or deleted shows etc. You think Tivo did some kind of update or maintenance and did not change the version or tell us so they do not have to accept responsibility? Makes me wonder though because I have heard a few people saying it is quicker lately.
