Star Wars series will run to at least 100 episodes

I'm kind of burned out with the Cash Cow known as Stars Wars ............but for those that still love the franchise this must be good news

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4808746.stm

"The TV series spin-off of the Stars Wars film franchise will run to at least 100 episodes, according to producer Rick McCallum.
He told BBC Radio 1 the writing team would soon be meeting to start on the project, which would begin filming in 2008 and be ready the same year."

well, that is - It'll run at least 100 episodes, until the network decides to pull it after 3 episodes of less than a 15-share...

I'll watch it, of course... I just wish that Lucal would allow someone else to write it. It would be infinitely better for it.

"I hate sand, its course, you're soft"

Yes Paraphrased but so bad!!!! - Must be fun to be a billionaire in Marin County and can do ANYTHING you want.

Agreed- Anyone but Lucas - As Harison Ford said to him "George, you can write this S#$%, but you can't say it"

I read GL 'with his own money' will make 100 episode regardless of how high or low TV ratings are. He's factoring in DVD sales, and we all know that hard-core SW fans will pay any amount for anything Star Wars

yep. Lucas may actually want the show to bomb, that way he can charge more for "unaired eps" on DVD.

If its cancelled mid run, imagine how much he will get for a 2 ep DVD and he could space out the release of new DVD's as long as he likes, and the die hards would still pay it.

Who cares about Luke Skywalker growing up? If there is no Jedi Action, I doubt I'll have much interest in a Star Wars series.

Such cynicism.

The show's not even going to air for another 2 years and already we're talking about cancellation?

I wouldn't call myself a die hard fan boy (although I did like all 6 movies), but I'm looking forward to the show. There's a rich Star Wars universe that this show could dip into, which can't be said for a lot of new shows.

But by the time they hit DVD, he'd be long dead.....

I was not saying it would flop at all, simply stating that if it were, it would be better for Lucas financially if it were cancelled.

Look how Paramount scammed Star Trek fans. When TOS first went to DVD, they released all the eps on 2 ep DVD's at $19.99 a pop. After they got done with Star Trek Voyagers 7 season run of DVD's, they then went back and released box sets of TOS. And I know alot of diehard Trek fans also bought those DVD's even though they had already purchased the series on the 2 DVD sets. So Paramount came out way ahead by doing that.

100 eps could be aired in 5 seasons(20 eps a season). Now if it gets cancelled(again not saying it would) at any time, you really think Lucas would not take advantage of that and try to milk as much money out of the unaired eps that have already been produced? If I were Lucas, I would do that in a heartbeat. Release 2-4 ep DVD's at $29.99 a pop, until they have been all released, then turn around and release season box sets of the unaired eps afterwords, and offer a few new things that were not included on the 2-4 ep DVD's, and guess what, the die hards would snatch those up as well, just to get the special features. And I have a feeling Lucas is thinking about that even while producing these 100 eps.

He will not get as much money from the die hards if the series runs its full course though, so it would not surprise me if he is hoping that the series gets cancelled at some point during the shows run, because he is sitting on a gold mine if the series gets cancelled, that he won't have if they stick with it throughout the entire run.

I don't really see where the scam is here. When they began releasing the TOS DVD's, season-long box sets were virtually unheard of, and it was several years before the boom in TV on DVD, which nobody predicted. Paramount released the series the same way it had released it on VHS and on laser discs, 2 eps per disc. The MSRP's on the DVD's were kind of pricey, but this was back in the 90's, the days of the dot-com bubble, DVD e-commerce price wars. I doubt I ended up paying much more than what the box sets originally went for, plus I didn't have to wait the (I'm guessing) five years or so between releases.

I suppose some people felt the need to rebuy the season sets; I can't imagine why. You can't blame Paramount for that, and it's a stretch to consider it part of some nefarious, years-in-the-making plan to scam Star Trek fans.

I wasn't saying they had to buy them, but like Star Wars fans, they bought them up like idiots.

I never blamed Paramount for doing it, hell they probably laughed at how the die hards went for it though. I bought every 2 ep DVD as they came out, never bothered with the season sets because I already had the eps.

I'm just saying that Lucas could be hoping for his series to actually fail, because he would make way more money that way, then if it went all the eay to the end.

Even if Paramount did purposely scam people with TOS, I can't blame them in the least, because they came out ahead in the ong run by doing so.

Also look how alot of people will continually buy DVD's of the same movie over and over if they rerelease it with more features. I have 3 copies of Terminator 2 because of it, the original DVD release, the Ultimate Edition, and a Special edition version(I only bought the original, and other 2 were gifts), but yet I know people who made sure to buy all 3 versions though just to make sure they have it.

Is that a scam? Of course it is, but I can't blame the studios for doing it, because it isn't my fault people are dumb enough to buy the same exact DVD again just to get some special feature that they didn't put in the original release.

I think there's a lot we don't know yet about the (HD/Blu Ray)DVD and digital download market of 2009 and beyond that at this point this is all pure speculation.

I for one want to find out more about the content of the show at this point. You thought waiting 18 months for the next Sopranos season was tough!

If they do it right, there should be LOTS of Jedi action.

Vader during this time frame is out scouting the galaxy and hunting down all the remaining Jedi. The Death Star is being built. Obi Wan takes Luke and goes into hiding. Boba Fett. Chewbacca meets Han Solo - young Imperial recruit. All kinds of fun stuff can happen.

If they do it right.

Apart from anything else, Lucas has never been one to let a plotline get in the way of a good story! Could be fun - but I'll bet dollars to donuts every word will be dissected here and in other forums!

I can hear it now.......

"It's good, but it's not Star Wars". etc., etc., etc.

How about this theory.......and pulled out of my a$$ of course.....

Lucas won't care how many episodes air at all, as it will be the super dooper extras on the gift set of the trilogies on Blu-Ray. Pay $200 for the base Blu-Ray set, pay $300 for the collector's Blu-Ray set, with the TV episodes as an extra.

I would give the series a look. I has a lot of potential do be very entertaining, if done correctly. I think there are a lot of interesting stories that could be told. I would like it if they hold true to the Star Wars story. I would be more likely to watch it if it was available on regular TV. I just don't purchase or rent DVD's.

100 episodes, could rock or could suck. I hope the shows at least mediocre. They should let the fine folks who created KOTOR do it. Now that is how to tell a SW story.
