Possible Dish to Comcast

Looking at going from Dish with 2 Hoppers and 2 Joeys to Comcast with 2 Tivo DVRs and 2 Minis. But, Comcast sales is driving me CRAZY!

They keep pushing me to bundles which are fine. I was wanting to get the 105MB internet with the HD Premier 260+ channel lineup. I keep saying that I want to use cable cards and Tivo but they keep saying that I need the X1 box, which I don't if I have Tivo.

Any advise on how to proceed?

Most of the Comcast reps and techs have no idea what CableCards or TiVos are. They are trained on selling/installing Comcast equipment and nothing else, so trying to get them to understand what you want to do is probably way more trouble than it's worth. I suggest you get whatever Comcast bundle package you want and take their boxes at first. Then after a few days just add the Cablecards to your account and replace their boxes with TiVo boxes. Once your TiVos are up and running, just return their boxes back to your local Comcast office. You definitely won't need any Comcast boxes for anything if you have TiVos working with Cablecards. Even Xfinity on-demand is available through TiVos in many (and eventually all) Comcast markets.

Why 2 TiVos? The Hopper is only 3 tuners right? So a single 6 tuner Roamio would be equivalent to what you had. Unless you need a his/hers, in which case I understand as me and my wife both have our own TiVos too.

Right now I have 2 hopper 2TB units, one for kid shows and one for everything else. The kid's unit is about 60% full and the other about 40% on average. The kids unit is more for long term storage. We have a child with autism and he gets stuck wanting to watch certain shows over and over.

So which TiVo are you going to get? Unfortunately there is no Roamio with 2TB of storage so you'll either need to get two Pro units (3TB/ea) or get some lesser units and upgrade them yourself. Luckily the Roamio units are easy to upgrade. Just drop in a blank drive and it dose the rest.

At my BestBuy, there's often a Comcast rep in the TV section, especially weekends. I assume they get a lot of Tivo questions.

Actually, I've never asked them anything cause I would usually first come across a BB employee who has Tivo's at home. (especially the Magnolia locations)

What I actually do is go through the Comcast and 3rd party websites to see what specials and packages are offered. And then call a local rep I like to put the order in.

Inside our city limits we only have TWC available, cable-wise, so I'm going to guess we don't qualify as part of "everywhere", but then people (including some of those of us who live here) have been saying "Man, this place is really nowhere" about us for as long as I can remember (which goes back to before there was a cable company here) anyway.

You may want to try for a double bundle instead of a triple play. I have this (105Mbs internet and their highest "preferred" TV package) & I am paying a base rate of about $100/month. This actually is also including 4 cable cards & they threw in HBO for free for 12 months. I then use Vonage ($15/month) for phone service (but probably don't need this as we use cells more these days). I can easily cancel my phone service if needed without affecting my Comcast bundle.

Now, in order for me to keep getting this lower rate, I have to call EVERY November cause around this time, my bill shoots up to about $150/month. I threaten to cancel and they lower it back to my current rate for another year. The other thing too is they are only charging me about $1.50/month for each cable card. I have heard a lot of other Comcast customers are getting charged about $7.50/month for each cable card ($10 outlet fee - $2.50 equipment credit) so this could be a factor too.

The tradeoff/problem is they normally don't make it easy to own a TiVo. I have had techs out and they are usually CLUELESS about a TiVo and cable cards & how they work. I also have a family member who has an Comcast X2 box and I recently used it. I must that that it is the BIGGEST piece of junk I have seen yet. Unfortunately, there aren't many other good options out there for cable cards.

Yea, there are a few cable card options like the Silicon dust, Samsung, Hauppauge and Ceton products, but in my opinion none of them compare to the TiVo hardware & its ease of use. I am also afraid that we may have seen the last line of retail TiVos with the Roamios as cable companies are increasingly make it difficult to own these products (price and support reasons) & TiVo just won't be able to weather the storm in the long run. I think TiVo is going to wind up having to move into software only and will provide their interface in more cable boxes (like they currently do with some of the smaller cable companies). This will stink as it will require renting a box from them.

I love my TiVos and amazingly my Xfinity OnDemand is working great with all my premieres, but I wonder where I will be in 5 yrs. Oh well, TiVo was nice while it lasted.

I have a friend who has the X2 box as well. I must agree that it is HORRIBLE compared to TiVo. They have a main DVR with remote terminals on two other TVs. Not only is the interface not good on all of it, but apparently you can't pause live TV on the remote terminals. What idiot thought up this lame idea? Just another example of the Comcrap service.

Or at least not charging them so much upfront for the X2 equipment needed (even if it is inferior) & in some sort of bundle deal. I think this is another factor that is killing TiVo as well.

Go Rendel, I don't know about the Hopper, but with TiVo, you can move non-copy-protected programs to an external hard drive (through a networked PC) for long term storage. From what I read here, I think Comcast has a pretty good copy-protection policy. People here will be happy to help you set up kmttg and pyTivo--that might help you survive with just one Roamio.

Yea, I have had several similar instances like this. I even had one person get turned off by my TiVO suggestion for not only the larger up front price factor, but the fact that if something goes wrong with the TiVO DVRs, its basically up to them to get it fixed. Unlike how they can take their current Comcast DVR back to a local office and easily trade it in for free when needed. I then chuckled when they informed me they have easily done this 5 times with their Comcast DVRs in the last 2 yrs. That ALONE should be a deterring factor & worth the cost of TiVo equipment, but I guess not with some people.

Remember also that 2TB on DISH is roughly equal to 4TB on Comcast because of MPEG-4 vs. MPEG-2. Both are heavily compressed, so it's likely around a 2:1 ratio. I'd go for twin 3TB units if I were you...

FIOS is the heaviest user of disk space, that same 4TB on Comcast is roughly equivalent to 6TB on FIOS...

As a point of reference, I still have a Dish vip622 that shows how many hours available, rather than percentage available. It has a 320gb HD, that says 30 hours is available. This was roughly true, when Dish was mpeg2,but when they converted to mpeg4,the 30 hours became 90hours, although it still lists the 30 hours (deleting 3 one hour episodes increases available capacity by one hour).

Now as lousy/compressed as many claim Dish is (and that may very well be true), I find that Time Warner that I switched to on May 2nd to have inferior picture quality to Dish, especially when watching sports. Anyway, I seem to be getting less than the 75 hours I thought I might get with my Roamio which has a 500gb drive compared to the 90 hours I got on my 320gb Dish dvr.

Dish to Comcast move

I'm also considering a move from Dish to Comcast. They have a great deal for 24 mo's where I can get a Double Play (Digital Premier TV+ 25Mbs Internet) for $109.99/mo but it includes an X1 DVR for 1 year. I already have a Tivo so don't need the X1 -- even if it's free, it isn't because that would be considered the free Cable Card and I'd have to add one for the Tivo. To make matters worse the online ordering system insists on including a rented cable modem as a mandatory option at $8/mo on top of the $109.99 even though I already have my own D3 Cable Modem. And I know there will be other fees and taxes. It's pretty hard to shop based on price when they never list all of the fees.

Is there any way of getting rid of the X1 and the Cable modem fee and adding the Tivo. The fine print on this offer says "TV and Internet service is limited to a single outlet", "cannot be combined with any other offers". Are these offers designed to eliminate Tivo as a viable option? The OP didn't seem to get anywhere with the service rep on getting rid of the "free X1".

The service reps probably won't be able to help you with this, as they are only able to read from a script and TiVo/Cablecards are never on the script. You're probably just going to have to take the package as it is offered. Then after it is all installed, take the Comcast cable modem and X1 box down to your local Comcast store and exchange it for a CableCard. That should eliminate the modem fee and I think you should also be able to get an equipment credit on your bill for turning in the X1 box and using your own TiVo.

It sucks that the nearest Comcast office is 40 miles away. They closed the one just down the street last year. My parents are on Charter and in a similar situation -- they have Tivos but still had to take a Charter box because it was part of the package even though it's not turned on.

It sucks that the nearest Comcast office is 40 miles away. They closed the one just down the street last year. My parents are on Charter and in a similar situation -- they have Tivos but still had to take a Charter box because it was part of the package even though it's not turned on.
After they install the X1 for you, you could call up Comcast and tell them you are having problems with it and that you want to use your own TiVo and have them send out a tech with a CableCard and have him haul away the X1 and cable modem while he is there.

Wow, that's pretty bad. They shut down one of our offices too, although it's not nearly 40 miles to the other one.

I was able to get an online deal in-store, but that of course requires the store part of it. It was an insane process with several hours fighting them to get the online deal in-store, but I finally got it. You're probably going to have to take all the extra crap and then have it swapped out...

You will get the cable card 'free' (instead of your cable box), and a small discount for customer owned equipment.

You definitely can use your own cable modem to avoid paying monthly (won't get a credit, but it will pay for itself in way less than a year.. 7 months IIRC..)

I had no problem getting exactly what I wanted by chatting with an online csr. They couple I originally chatted with knew all about replacing Comcast boxes with cable cards and letting you use your own modem. Although I didn't sign up online with Comcast.

But I did sign up with Comcast after being invited to an Game Of Thrones Season 4 premier event. The sales rep also was very knowledgeable with what I wanted and I had no problems having the installer getting every thing up and running.
