I've heard you can modify a 12VDC vehicle alternator to make 120VAC (remove the diodes, do something with the windings, or add a step-up transformer).

Didn't the mapping minion say it was? I thought I remember him mentioning it as a good selling point for that island, because there would be no potential exposure to the virus.

True - he said that it was a known island, well mapped, but not inhabited.

But then, they were going in a random direction by wind power, so who knows if they hit the right island at all!

That's just crazy talk.

I don't think the helicopter could have brought that much water back in one trip... even if it could have made it to the island (which seems like it was about 24 hours away in boat speed) they would have needed to make a lot of trips and wasted a lot of fuel.

This show is dumb, IMO. Radio silence doesn't mean you can't listen - even in the arctic, they should have gotten some inkling of the state of the world in the time they were there.

When it becomes difficult to suspend your disbelief, even when trying to do so, I think it's time to stop watching.

The acting, though there are some bright spots, is generally bad as well.

I have to agree that the storyline on this one was kinda weak and boring compared to the previous ones.

I mean, we knew they weren't going to fail to reach the island and then every one dies, the end.

I wonder when the ship will run into the side of the dome.

Water is about 8 lb/gallon. The useful load of an MH-60 helicopter is 6684lb. That's about 835 gallons of water per trip.

Plus, on the trips to the island, you could have taken passengers (MH-60 capacity is 11) and left them on the Island, reducing the water requirements on the ship.

Greatly complicated by the fact main propulsion is NOT ELECTRIC......

I didn't mean weight wise, I meant more like space inside the helicopter to carry water. I guess maybe they could have rigged something up to carry underneath it.

One of the sites I pulled up when reading about the drive on the destroyer was a proposal to fit Arleigh Burke class destroyers with hybrid electric drives. According to the article, the drive they have now isn't very efficient at low speeds.

The Nathan James is a fictional destroyer. It's not unreasonable to hypothesize it could be fitted with a hybrid electric drive.

[nitpick]
An electric motor generates electricity whenever it's spinning, even if it's being spun by electrical input. The electric power generated counters the input power. "Back-EMF" is the term. When input power equals Back EMF (plus friction and any load), the motor stops accelerating.
[/nitpick]

It probably would have been more efficient to rig the helicopter to somehow drive the main reverse osmosis filter. Then the could just desalinate sea water that they collect from right next to the ship rather than transporting fresh water.

Actually, since they had no fuel shortage, they could have just boiled sea water to produce distilled water.

Plus the prototype Tachyon chambers, which could be fired up if things get really bad.

And the non post apocalyptic shows aren't? It's TV, stupid should be in the name. TV has always been this way.

It would have been epic if they did all die, and the next episode was another ship trying to find this one, and resume work on the cure.

But then they wouldn't get their chance to have the captain and the doctor get it on - like in every show ever.

Oh, don't exaggerate...most shows don't even have captains and doctors!

Well, there was this one show. . . And, as I recall, it even had an alien.

But it was the captain and the alien who got it on (at least in most of the slash fic)...

I kinda liked that the episode was a departure from some big baddie trying to kill everyone (first the guys on Gitmo and then the Russians). It helps that I don't understand how these ships work, and that I really couldn't care less. The show is kind of entertaining in it's way. I stay away from the details and focus on the survival aspects, which I think it more important than all the details.

One thing does annoy me. Since Lost we now have to have, in every show like this, a rogue person with long hair and a southern accent, making snarky comments, threatening to do some mayhem. In this case it's the guy from Gitmo they picked up for no real purpose (I guess to save his life) other than to be obnoxious to the women and have everyone else hate his guts.

Otherwise the show is what is...light summer fare that I can suspend any semblance of reality to watch. It's an easy show to watch while I play Candy Crush or surf the web on my tablet and still get the gist of the episode.

My bad. I thought you were alluding to Kirk and Bones. I added Spock.

Snipped.

I thought they picked him up because he was special forces/merc who would come in handy in a firefight. And he was 'Murican.

He's there to demonstrate a non-PC guy and make sure the audience knows that that's a bad thing. Also, can't wait for the captain to pork the scientist even though his character would never do that (based on what we've seen so far)

Pork? I anticipate a deeply religious experience.
