video looks bad on HD tv (pytivo)

I snagged some movies (mp4) that are supposedly high def. They look great on the PC.

Pulled them to the HD tivo using pytivo. On the HD tv they look very choppy; unwatchable. On the much smaller non-HD tv they look fine (with S2 tivo). File size is about 800mb per hour.

I have other videos that were rips of standard dvds (i ripped them), they always looked fine on the HD tv. File size about 400 mb/hour.

Ideas?

When you pull on the Tivo, it transcodes the video and possibly incorrectly.

Try push from PyTivo since it does not transcode. You can do it from the web browser interface,
http://localhost:9032
The video would be under one of your shared folders.

AT the above link all i see is:

"Web Configuration

Pull from TiVos:
Basement 2014
Family Room"

It seems to know my tivos (and it lists the shows on them), but how do i push a video to them?

edit - ok i will set tivo_username and tivo_password in the Server section of the config. then try to see if it lets me push - tomorrow, gotta go.

It sounds like you haven't set up your MAK.

Hmm. I've been transferring shows as indicated above; wouldn't the MAK be all set? Can you expand on your theory?

He's mistaken. pyTivo only uses the MAK when pulling from the TiVo, which is not at issue here.

This isn't accurate, either -- both pull and push will transcode some things, and not other things, depending on the circumstances. But certainly, there are cases where pull will transcode material that push won't.

Normally, I'd expect choppy video to indicate that something wasn't being transcoded -- transcoded video tends to come out very smoothly. pyTivo just avoids transcoding whenever possible, because it slows down the transfer, and bogs down the CPU. However, in the case of pulling an MP4, there will be a transcode -- unless you're also using "ts=on", with a Series 4 or later TiVo.

Anyway, there's not really enough info here to diagnose the problem. I'd want to see the logs.

Pulled or pushed, some files are choppy.......however one of the transfers did play normally today. Coincidence or not, the 1.77 aspect show looked fine, the 2.35's looked bad.

It's a tivo premiere btw.

I will post a log for a choppy one soon.

OK, that file will always be transcoded, because it's "mpeg4", but not h.264.

Anyway, there's nothing obviously wrong there. I'd try upgrading to a newer FFmpeg, but I can't promise anything.

Problem solved.

I was using software called "format factory" to hard burn captions, and that screwed things up for the tivo I guess.

I tried the original (no captions) and it worked fine. Then I hard burned captions using Handbrake and it ran fine too.

Thanks McBrine for a great product btw!
