Multi-Room Viewing

I have read some posts where folks opined that Tivo will likely never provide file streaming vice file transfer for multi-room viewing. There were those who said it was a network bandwidth issue, this can't be the limiting issue true since you can stream movies down from places like Netflix. Some seemed to indicate that the technoloigy was difficult, again, not true, the DVRs that Verizon provides with FIOS streams videos, etc.

The software to manage streamed video is already on the Tivo in the form of the software that receives and let's you view/manage streams such as those from Netflix. The software to serve up the stream is also on the Tivo (in some form) as the content is served up for transfer during multi-room viewing. I realize it's not as simple as just joining the two features, but surely you're a good part of the way there already.

Systems such as the Verizon FIOS DVR do this and it's a great feature. Why? I just want to watch the content, I don't want it taking up HD space on the receiving Tivo, I don't want little 'multi-room viewing turds' left behind that I have to go delete (something my kids never remember to do), etc. Competition is a wonderful thing in technology and your competitors have got it. I have always bragged that Tivo's functionality is far superior to other DVRs...

Surely, this is a feature in the works?

Thanks!!

30-Second Scan

I like 30-second skip (the hidden feature you have to enable over skip-to-end), but I'd prefer a 30-second scan.

Here's how it would work:
* With a single 'skip-ahead' button press, let me scan ahead (fast-forward) in increments of 30-seconds, at approximately 16x speeds (with a frame-rate that provides good detail on the content)
* Count the button presses, and continue the scan until 30, 60, 90, or 120s have passed (depending on how many times the button was pressed)
* Let me interrupt the scan at any time by pressing play or skip-back (instant replay). Do NOT skip back when I press-play, the whole idea is to scan ahead somewhere between 1 and 30s, and skipping-back just makes that harder to do. If I want to skip back, I'll use Instant Replay.

With this feature, I could skim programming *and * commercials and be able to go back and watch segments of either without completely missing them--in contrast, I hate 30-second-skipping into the middle of my program. With 30-second-scan, I could also very measurably pass through time in increments of 30s, which is something I can't easily do with the unwieldy FF3. So I see it as a best of both worlds.

For instance, I would use this to skim through a football game I'm only mildly interested in, and use this feature to skip the time between plays. Likewise, I would use it to skip through commercials, but make sure I don't miss any commercials that actually interest me.

I had a feature like this on a VCR once, and I found it quite nice, and that the 30-second-skip on Tivo is missing out on some of its benefits.

How about letting us clear the "recently deleted" folder

I swear, spending an hour just deleting items out of my "recently deleted" folder is *not* how I want to spend my evening. Why do I want to? Well, that would be none of your business, but I'll be nice and tell you why anyways:
There are a number of reasons why you would want to:

#1: You're a neat freak, and you want to keep the old stuff elsewhere. I keep everything on the PC, the Tivo is just a stepping point. The PC has immensely more storage (around 3T) and can do so much more such as serve media to front room, bedroom. Why WOULD I want to keep something on one Tivo, really?

#2: Unbox
Believe it or not, clearing the file from the "recently deleted" list will clear up the title for download to another box, or to your PC.

This reminds me of the whole "Are you sure you want to quit" or "are you sure you want to restart, everything will be lost" prompts in video games, only it's WORSE. Not only do I get confronted with the "do you really want to delete" the program, but I've already told it to delete itself.

Either provide us a way to mass delete "ie: empty the recently deleted items" folder, or let us opt out of this nonsense, because it IS just that, nonsense. There's even a perfect place for the thing in the menu tree as it is, in restart or reset system.

I understand some may find this useful, but, come on, when something sits in there for weeks on end, or when I have to go through and delete 150 items from 2 DVR's manually, there's a problem, a big, big problem. I was lucky enough to have a Tivo back when this WASN'T a problem (ie: there was no deleted items folder), and I saw the problem then that this would become, and that was only with one DVR.

Come on, Tivo, this isn't a "feature", it's an annoyance the way you've implemented it! Give your customers back control over THEIR DVRs and stop wasting their time!

In the program description screen, the program description is often slightly truncated, you have to press the info button (2nd from top right on remote) to get the entire description.

For the original Tivo, this made sense, because giving more room to the program description would have taken away room from the bottom part of the screen, where all 5 possible options were listed.

Now, in 2009, there are more than 5 options. The top 4 are listed and the 5th is "more options". How about moving option 4 into the "more options" menu and creating one more line so that I can see the complete program description. Descriptions seem to be getting longer and I'm having to go to a 2nd screen for every program.

In the program description window- where it lists the channel, the field width were specified back when a channel's call letter string was at most 4 characters. Channel call letter strings > 4 characters are truncated to 3 characters and ... is added.

Well, it's 2009, and most of the channels I watch are HD, and their call letters are SEVEN Characters (WXXX-HD). So in the program description screen, I always see truncated names.

Not hard to fix Tivo - how about it?

The ability to play MP3s through the TiVo is a sweet feature. What I'd like to see as an enhancement to this functionality is a "jukebox" mode, which basically adds three things:

1) Won't let you exit without a password.

2) When a song is selected, rather than starting to play (and stopping the currently playing song) it is queued up to be played.

3) If there are no songs in the queue, it starts randomly playing songs.

The idea is that party guests could have access to the TiVo remote and program their own party mix of music simply by selecting tracks off of the TiVo.

Someone suggested I start watching a weekly show. But it's not on for the next 2 weeks. It was on yesterday, and I can get to it in the program guide, but TiVo (HD) won't let me create a Season Pass for it (assumedly because I can't tape the episode I clicked on).

I could create a wishlist - but it wouldn't be precise, and for cleanliness I'd have to convert it to a SP later.

So I have had to write myself a (paper) note to try again in a week.

TiVo - you're better than this. If I can locate the show in the guide, I should be able to create an SP for it. (show is "Modern Family").

For sports events like the World Series, that may or may not have all their games, I propose a database change. Put in a "penciled-in flag" for those games/programs that have only a moderate chance of occurring. Then keep track of the programs that would normally be shown during the penciled n period.

When the Tivo determines the next daily call, it would then test if there is a penciled-in program and compare it to any season passes that would normally occur during the penciled-in period. If those exist, then the next daily call would be scheduled in such a way that it would be after TiVo updates the schedule to be downloaded that day and long enough before the penciled-in period so that the individual TiVo could update its programming to reflect any changes.

I have lots of suggestions! I guess I make a thread for each of them.

The main one that I miss from the Cox DVR I had in Virginia is where you can sort your recorded programs so that the shows that get deleted in order to make room for more shows are the shows you care least about. Right now, Tivo only deletes shows by age.

For instance, if I record a Dr Phil show on the 1st and an Oprah show on the 15th, Tivo will delete the Dr Phil show first unless I mark it "until I delete." What I'm suggesting is you can move the Oprah show closer to the bottom of the list (in a similar way that you can move season passes up and down) and that would indicate that you would prefer the Oprah show to delete first. Did that make sense?

One of the most frustrating things for me about TiVo is the extremely simplistic control over recording priority. The simple list we have for the season passes just doesn't cut it. It's simply not always possible to arrange the show order to accomodate things that are USUALLY but not always on different nights.

Let's say that I have "CSI: Miami" in my season pass manager at position #3. Normally this show is aired on Monday night, but it's not at all uncommon for CBS to air repeats on Saturday. However, all I care about is the Monday airing. I don't want TiVo recording repeats on other nights instead of other shows that might be farther down the season pass list.

Give the user the option to specify how the season pass applies to first-run or repeats separately for each day of the week. That is, tell it to record ANY episode of CSI:Miami as long as it's on Monday, but for any other day of the week, it should only record FIRST-RUN episodes. We might also have a third option that lets us record repeats on any night, but which gives OTHER first-run shows priority over repeats. This allows us to set an overall priority, but also allows us to avoid surprises when the schedule changes.

(I suspect it does part of this now, particularily the first-run versus repeats thing, but it's not happening at a level where the user has control.)

Of course, this brings us to another problem... first run shows are often marked as repeats in the guide. That needs to be fixed. Period. In the meantime, TiVo could override the "repeat" flag if the first-aired date matches the current date.

The other thing TiVo really needs to do is figure out how to have multiple boxes in the same home talk to each other to avoid redundancies in recording. With two machines, I find that it's useful to have a certain amount of overlap between the season pass lists. Sometimes it keeps me from missing something. However, it also means that there are times that the same show is recorded separately on each machine, and in some of those cases, it means that I STILL missed something. If TiVo could consolidate the recording schedule across multiple machines, this could easily be avoided.

1. Stream Tivo content to any other Tivo in the house. Practically every other cable DVR has MRV that can play any program in any room. WHY CAN'T TIVO?!? These broadcast flags are killing Tivo. There is a thread about Tivo losing value and this is the reason. Without a proper way to watch what is stored on one tivo on another tivo in the house even I, a diehard Tivo fan, will be forced to switch back to the cable companies box. Being able to watch stored content on any tv in my house is the second most important function of the DVR aside from storing shows.

2. An indicator in the guide that shows the program is already scheduled to record.

3. Create a playlist. I would like to be able to tell the Tivo to play various shows in a row so I don't need to select them one after another. I know you can play all the programs in a single folder but I want to play various programs from various folders.

4. Play Flash Video from the web. So users can setup their own "Hulu" channel. And if this is possible I would like to be able to add my "flash video channels" I setup to the bottom of the Now Playing list. Just like Netflix.

5. Tru2way or some way to use Video On Demand.

6. I would like to be able to manage content and recordings on other Tivo's in my house from my living room Tivo. I have 3 Tivo's and do not like having to go to another room to manage content and what to record on the other Tivo's.

7. If multiple tivo's are on the same network and there are 3 shows that I would like to record I would like the tivo to figure this out and use other tivos to record one of the shows so I can get all three.

8. More sophisticated scheduling. If there are 3 shows I record on at the same time and one of them is playing again a few nights later I would like the tivo to figure this out and schedule all three shows accordingly. (Even if I have the season pass set to not record repeats)

9. This one's a huge stretch. But I would like to stream videos from the iPhone in my pocket over WiFi to the Tivo.

10. EpixHD.com just like Netflix Watch Now.

MHz Networks is an independent, non-commercial television broadcaster delivering international, educational programming and providing diverse cultural perspectives for a globally-minded audience.

They are preparing a channel for Roku. I have one MHZ channel available via my local pbs station (WDSC Daytona, FL) and I find it to be awesome. If I counted correctly there are 10 different "channels" available.
