Tivo brand adapter is freezing tivo unit

made a previous thread about precursors to this problem here:

http://tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=437427

Now I have the official tivo brand wireless adapter and its not working. My unit does not start with it plugged in, it will just hang indefinitely on the almost there screen. When I plug it in I have about 10 seconds until the unit freezes with whatever is on the screen and becomes unresponsive indefinitely. If I do not plug the adapter in the tivo unit will work fine. This is driving me nuts.

I just got off the phone with Tivo and they let me know about a problem they have seen for the past week. My tivo hung and needed to be rebooted and when it came backonline it said it would only partially work until I activated the tivo. I was able to watch recorded shows and go through the menus but I could not watch live tv. I also was not able to connect to tivo, but I had an IP address.

Tivo said this is a problem with Tivos that have lifetime service only. They had me try the following steps and it fixed the problem.

Tivo Central - Message and Settings - Restart or Reset System - Clear Thumb Ratings & Suggestions.

Tivo rebooted and then worked. Hope this helps

My tivo is showing FX on the channel that should be ESPN. I have a number of other channel issues but this is the one I'll focus on. I called Comcast (3 times) and swapped out my CableCARD. It has been reset twice. My tivo is a Series 3 HD DVR with with the add on HD. The signal strength is fine. My Comcast DVR downstairs shows channel 173 (ESPN HD) just fine. so It's not a signal issue. Having replaced the CableCARD, it's unlikely to be the CableCARD that is causing the problem. Some channels are coming in just fine on the channel number that they are supposed to be on. Some channels aren't coming in at all (like 31 - ESPN non HD, 66, 67). HBO is coming in fine at 547 and FX HD (665) is showing FX like it should. I thought about doing a channel scan but not an option with a CabekCARD. Any suggestions? I looked at "wrong program information" from "nachoguy50" but he didn't think his problem was with his Tivo and I didn't want my comments to end up on a dead thread. I think my problem is with my Tivo. Signal strength would cause channels to move around, I've seen the behavior on two cards and my comcast DVR is running fine.

I checked Tivo Support again, checked the OOB - it was fine, "Channel List Received: No" so I called Comcast again. The tech didn't know what I was talking about but after a half hour, we decided to have a tech come out to the house. Still interested in any suggestions.

I'm assuming I could go RF into a box and RF out to the Tivo and still change the channels on my tivo, not the

Tivo told me that I could get an HD unit and this would work. tried it....it doesn't. A card from the cable company is required to do anything with the digital signal. Looking for a good solution.

Video on Demand buggy

Greetings

Since this is my first post a brief history. I have been using a TIVO series one since 2001. Never had one problem, always a fan. Then I lost my (Qwest) cable and because of the TV broadcast change it was rendered useless. I did not want anything to do with COX cable or satellite TV.

So about three months ago I get a new HD Tivo. The first unit kept crashing every 3 or 4 hours the green light flashing. So TIVO told me to exchange it for a new one which I did. I have it only for OTA high def channels using an indoor antenna. It is hooked up to a high def TV via HDMI cable and I have the audio hooked up to my surround sound stereo via optical cable. It was hooked up to my phone. This setup worked flawlessly.

Then I got Qwest DSL (1.5 m) and my visiting brother hooked up to my modem and told me it was fast enough for Netflix. So that got me to thinking about hooking up my TIVO to the internet.

So I got the TIVO wireless G adapter and hooked up my unit to the internet. It connected to the service successfully and after a few hiccups the Video on Demand feature became active. I was able to set up my Netflix account and can see my netflix queue. I can also view utube videos and have watched some netflix movies.

So here is the problems. When I play a utube video the screen goes blank and my TV displays "Searching for Signals." This lasts for a second then the screen comes back. This will happen if I replay or rewind the utube video. Then when I exit Video on Demand the strange behavior follows. When switching to live TV the screen goes blank and I get "Searching for Signals" for a second then screen comes back. Try to rewind same thing. It does it also while navigating selections at TIVO central. All the while this happens I still have audio. Only video is affected. This behavior also happens after watching Netflix as well, only not every time.

The only fix to this is to re-boot which does get rid of the behavior but it is annoying having to do this and I'm afraid to use Video on Demand anymore cause I don't know what damage it could be doing. I called TIVO support but the only advice they had was to replace the wireless adapter which I did but I still have the same issue.

Anyway sorry this is long but I thought the more information the better. I'm at the point of just buying a ROKU for netflix but I thought maybe there was an answer out there.

Thanks so much for any ideas

FOX TV shows jump to fullscreen?

I've noticed this for the last few weeks, but I don't know anyone local with a Tivo that I can ask. On House, Fringe, Lie to Me, and other night time FOX shows, roughly 1/2 of the way through a show, it jumps from widescreen to fullscreen, usually accompanied by a brief audio glitch. Sometimes it jumps back to widescreen later and then jumps back, but it always seems to happen first around the 1/2 mark. I have a Series 2 Tivo, entirely stock, non-hd. Comcast cable standard, no set-top box -- the Tivo is plugged directly into the cable jack. My TV is a non-hd unit. I'm in the SW Florida market.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Comcast DTA IR Code (Thomson DCI1011COM)

I have a Series 2 DT Tivo and I need to use the IR blaster that came with the Tivo to control the DTA that Comcast has forced on me. The DTA is a Thomson DCI1011COM (not the Pace DC50X DTA, which seems to be more common based on my message board research). Does anyone have the 5-digit IR code to control this? I have tried the 10104 code that I found on other message boards to control the Pace DTA, but it doesn't work with the Thomson DTA.

Also, I have confirmed that the DTA is functioning properly because I can control it with the remote that come with it. I have also tried adjusting and repositioning the IR blasters attached to the DTA several times, but this has not worked either, so I fairly certain it is a problem with the IR code.

Thanks!

Convert .TIVO to high quality AVI or other

I can't get a good quality conversion from .TIVO files.

I am brand new to TIVO. I have recorded some shows and I have transfer them across to my PC (they come across to my Desktop Plus software (I upgraded to Plus)) as .TIVO. I want to convert them to high quality AVI (like full HD). I have been unable to do this. Does Plus do this (if so I can't find out how) or what program will?

Boring Detail: I have a Windows Vista machine. When I use TIVO Desktop Plus I first move the files to my computer and they show up as .TIVO extensions. .TIVO seems to be my only options when moving to the PC. Once on the PC I use Plus to convert to AVI, but the quality is poor (the resulting AVI file is 320 x 240, 32 Pixel Depth and 29.97 Frames per second). I want something more along the line of 1080 not 320.

I also tried using two other programs (other than TiVo Desktop Plus). I use Avex Video Converter but it did not function at all (resulting file was all green pixels with no image). I also tried ConvertXt and again it did not function at all (also gave all green pixels with not image).

Any ideas to get a good quality? THANKS

Every time I want to transfer a show I have to restart the living room one so it will see the bedroom Tivo. Is there something in the software that makes it do this? It just started about a month ago. Like I said the bedroom one always sees the living room one. Also my computer can hook to either one it is just the one way that does not work unless I restart it.

Does this mean that the hard drive is failing (because it's not doing this while she plays a recording, it does it when it's live TV)?

Crash! Pioneer DVR-810H

From time to time I'd come home and my TiVo record light would be on but when I went to press "Live TV" on my remote nothing would happen and I'd realize that it had hung while recording. The solution was to unplug the power, plug it back in, and then it would start up and all would be fine.

This happened Monday except now it gets to the "Welcome. Powering up ..." screen and after a minute or two goes black and then seems to reboot and try and start over.

I think it's the hard drive because I opened up the cover, blue any dust out, and disconnected the hard drive. It stays on the "Welcome" screen, but never has that trying to reboot phase.

I got the Tivo in 2004 and its warranty expired in 2008.

Things brings up a lot of questions and opportunities for me.

1) I'd like to test the hard drive elsewhere (like attatch it to my computer). Are Tivo drives formatted completely differently than regular drives? Is there software that would allow my Windows PC to view the drive and/or attempt to recover data?

2) Drives are cheap and easy to hook up. How do I format one for Tivo? Get the OS on it? Etc. What's the best way to back it up in case this happens again?

Given that I'm starting over (I suspect everything else still works fine), now's a good time to try those other features I've seen on the forum, such as added software so that you can communicate more easily with your PC, etc.

3) I was in the habit of transferring my shows to my pc in Tivo format. Interestingly enough, while recent shows I could transfer back and burn a DVD with the Pioneer, older shows gave a wrong format error. I know there's PC software with codecs to allow the burning of regular DVD from tivo files. I just hope they're compatable to the older formats. (I suspect that as my TiVo upgraded itself, things changed.)

4) Now that I have the thing open and see how like a computer it is, it seems easy to swap out the DVD play (which is only -DVD) and swap it with one that can record to both + and -DVD. Is this as simple as a hardware issue, or would the TiVo OS need to be modified as well to recognize the new DVD player?

Thanks for your help. I'm in Tivo withdrawal. I think the quickest thing to do will be to get a new hard drive in there so I can get to recording programs again, and then find a place to try and recover the old drive.

---

Update: I connected the drive to my PC, went to 'Manage', and 'Disk Management' recognizes the drive just fine -- it invokes the "Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard" which, of course, I cancelled out of. This makes me think that maybe there was a software update that got corrupted so the Tivo can't boot up, rather than a drive failure, or if my unit's defective, it has something to do with the connection to the drive mechanism.

If the drive is fine, that means I can at least back up all my data once I'm able to read it. (:

---

Update 2: Curious if there was a power issue, I powered the drive with an external power source but kept the data connection to my Tivo unit. It still does the 'reboot' sequence, which makes me think it's having trouble reading the os to boot up.

my tivo will not change channels

i was hoping you could give me some advice if possible?

i recently purchased a second hand tivo system from ebay that came complete with an rf2 hard wired sky link in order to change the channels, i have phoned technical support and they had not come accross this solution before and told me that the most common way to change the channels was with "ir wands" so they could only offer a small amount of advice.

the rf2 hard wired link is not working, and although the power light on the link is on, and technical support have assured me that the way i have everything set up is correct, i still cannot change channels on the tivo and in the setup menu i get no response when trying to change channels using any of the codes supplied.

it isnt a complicated setup either it is just a thompson skydigibox with the tivo and a tv.

i have also tried using the front ir blaster in order to change the channels but this also does not work.

would it be worth me buying ir wands? or is the problem elsewhere?

i am desperate to get this working as it is driving me mad!!

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Power lost or TiVo HD unplugged

I have had my TiVoHD for over a year now. Now usually just on Monday and Tuesdays I get a message when my programs do not record in the record history, " power was lost or the recorder unplugged" This is usually only those first two days of a week. I ended up buying an new battery back up but that has not helped either. I am always gone at work when this happens in the evening and I get home to find my favorite programs have not recorded and my tivo must be rebooted to get it to respond to the remote with it stuck on a channel frozen. But the TiVo is always powered on and none of my alarms clocks indicate power has been shut off. I have OTA only. Fan still working in back so probably no overheating. Have a broadband connection for udates plugged into my router. Do not use HDMI just component video and toslink audio for outputs but has anyone had the same issues?? Suggestions? Help? Otherwise it seems to work fine with recording programs and otherwise. Thanks, Mark

Snow Leopard: running 1.95 but no photos/music showing up

hey all,

i've got a Tivo HD and had previously been running smoothly under 10.5 (Leopard) and an older version of Tivo Desktop.

of course, when i upgraded to 10.6 (Snow Leopard), everything broke.

when Tivo Desktop 1.95 came out the other day, I excitedly installed it, but sadly, when i manually connect to my computer's IP address from the Tivo, i see the name of the photo share, but nothing for the music and when i click the photo share, it says there is a network problem.

other possible helpful info:

[1] nothing has changed in the overall setup since it worked before (other than, of course, now running 10.6 and TD 1.95

[2] i switched the Tivo from DHCP to static IP - no change

[3] i've changed the IP address of my computer - no change

[4] i can see the tivo from a browser at the assigned IP address

[5] i can see the tivo using Safari Bonjour Browser

any ideas?

thanks in advance.
