Since switching to FIOS with two new Series 3 HD TIVOS, I have been using two DirecTV HD TIVO's, one for old recordings and the other as a OTA HD tuner. The one with the old recordings has now starting to "flash" every few seconds - the "flash" appears to be something other than what's on the screen at the time and only occurs in about 1/5th of the screen. I tried rebooting, no luck. I also checked it with different menus, with recordings playing/paused and with the local channels. It flashes no matter what. It has 6.3e SW.

Any thoughts on what I should try next. I would like to still be able to use the recordings.

Thanks

Outragous Overscan From Web Video

At first I thought it was an issue with just video tranferred from Desktop 2.7, because I didn't really notice an issue before with 2.6. I have the same 42" plasma set as I had the first day I started using the Tivo.
Now 2.8 is out and no improvement and even using video podcasts that go from the internet directly to my Tivo HD through the Video on Demand menus is overscanned as bad or worse as videos transferred from Tivo Desktop.
The Tivo box software has been updated at least once since 2.6, so that may be the problem.

In some videos, so much of the top of the screen is cut off, that entire sentences of on screen text graphics are unreadble.

Regular TV content from the OTA plays fine, only web video has the problem.

Is there a fix?

So my HR10-250 on my main TV just died. I have 2 additional HR10's and then another SD Directv Tivo box (I have refused to upgrade to anything non-Tivo to this point because I am stubborn). I guess I have a 4 LNB dish and I ran my own coax all over the house. But this was something like 4 or 5 years ago and have not kept up with the latest tech. I know new Directv Tivo boxes are supposed to be coming out next year and had just assumed I would upgrade then. But now I am wondering what to do since my main box just died. I get all my HD content OTA currently. I was reading in some other posts about current Directv HD DVR's and there seem to be 3 mentioned by I only find mention of a single unit on their website? So whats the deal with that? The unit on their website is listed as $200. I have always purchased my units but figured I would just lease a new one. Is that not an option now? Also do I need to get a new dish? New switch? More coax runs? Do I get rid of my antenna now? I am just kinda confused as even where to start.

Buying a replacement HR10-250

Hi,

The digital audio on my HR10-250 no longer works. I was looking on ebay and found another HR10-250 that just has a bad hard drive for cheap.

If I buy this receiver, can I just put the access card and hard drive from my current receiver into the one off ebay?

Will this damage the access card or receiver or hard drive?

Do I need to worry about whether the other one is owned or leased since I will be using my access card?

Is there anything else I need to worry about?

Would i be better off trying to put the motherboard from the ebay unit into my old unit?

Thank you,

HR2x and R16 - Same UI?

I am a Tivo fan boy and hold out, and had planned to hang on to my HR10 as long as possible. I did order a HR2x earlier this year, but for reasons I will not go into here, the install was cancelled.

However, one of my SD DirecTivo boxes went toes up, and I opted to let D* replaced it with an R16 as a means of getting my feet wet with the D* DVR offering, but in a secondary system in my home. Doing so has allowed me to maintain family tranquility.

First impressions are that it is really not all that bad (high praise from a Tivo fan boy and zealot!), and in fact there are some facets of it that I think handily trump my beloved HR10.

Which leads to the premise of the thread.... Is the R16 UI the same as the HR2x boxes? If so, I might actually be willing to consider going cold turkey and pulling the plug on my remaining Tivos, and getting a new DirecTV HD DVR while waiting to see what the new Tivo ends up looking like.

There are some aspects of the D* box that I will never like, in particular the horizontal guide, and overall lack of polish to the UI, but I have found some things about the R16 that are actually better than Tivo (scheduling a Series recording with a double click in the guide for one).

Anyway, if you have experience with both an R16 and an HR2x, please chime in.

I am thinking about leaving DirecTV for FiOS. But I don't want the FiOS DVRs.

If I get two TIVO HDs and add my 1TB eSATA that I have on my DirecTV HR2x, am I really missing out if I don't have a TIVOHD-XL on my living room TV? I mean, THX? I use it just for TV shows, not really movies. So other than the larger harddrive, which I can add myself, why should I spend more money?

Is anyone using HD Tivos on Fios and what do you think?

We are planning to get Directv HD in a few months. We are having some dirt work done and I wanted to bury the cables we will need.

What kind of cable will we need from the HD dish to the receiver? Is it just RG6?

How many lines of cable will we need for the HD dish?

Anything else I should consider?

Thanks

Cloned drive wont boot

I have a DirecTV HR10-250 with software version 3.1.5f.

I am trying to clone my original Tivo drive to a new drive of the same size (250GB). My original boots fine, but the clone will not boot past the "Welcome powering up" screen (it does not seem like the drive even spins up or is accessed).

I have a Backup of my original Tivo drive that I made several years ago, and I also made a new backup yesterday.

I have tried all combinations I can think of and cannot get the clone to boot. I have tried mfsrestore from the original backup, from the new backup, and also drive to drive using a mfsbackup | mfsrestore command. I have been looking at the WeaKnees upgrade instructions (tivo.upgrade-instructions.com) and the Hindsdale how-to. The general command I am using from the WeakNees guide is (hda is a FAT32 drive with the backup files, hdc is my cd-rom, hdd is destination drive):

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -zxpi /mnt/tivo.bak /dev/hdd

I have tried this with and without the "-s 127" option, with and without the "-r 4" option with and without the "-x" option, and with and without the "-b" option. no matter the command I use it finishes, but does not boot.

I am booting from the MFSTools 2.0 CD that I burned a couple years ago.

Thanks in advance for any help.

HR10-250 not booting

I have a HR10-250 still running old software (3.1.5f I beleive). It has been zippered.

I was having some problems with my optical audio output (no sound), so I unplugged the Tivo, and left it unplugged for an hour or so. When I plugged it back it, now it will not boot (does not get past the first "powering up" screen). The drive currently in the unit is an upgraded drive, and I still have the original drive, so I tried installing the original drive to see if it was a problem with the drive. The original drive boots normally with no problems. I hooked up the drive that wont boot and booted from a tool cd ("Ultimate boot cd") to run diagnostics (Maxtor Powermax as it was a Maxtor drive). It passes all diagnostics, so I do not think the drive is dead.

There were some shows recently recorded that I didnt get a chance to watch yet that I would like to watch if possible. I have another extra drive which I have been meaning to take the time to install as an additional drive for more recording space (and upgrade the software).

I was thinking I should try "MakeTivoBootable", but wasn;t sure if that was the correct path to go, and also wanted to check if anyone has used this successfully on a HR10-250, and if they have any tips or suggestiosn for getting it to work (Ive read it can be a pain).

The other thought I had was backing up the non-bootable drive to the blank drive and seeing if it woudl boto then, but wasnt sure if I would need to try to "fix" the tivo installation or still run "MakeTivoBootable".

Does anyone have any advice on how I should proceed?
Should I start with MakeTivoBootable first?
Is there a way to fix a Tivo installation?
Is there a way to install fresh Tivo software over the existing, while still keeping recordings?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Should I start with MakeTivoBootable first?
Is there a way to fix a Tivo installation?
Is there a way to install fresh Tivo software over the existing, while still keeping recordings?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Using an HD Tivo in an non-HD environment

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I've done some searching and can't find the answer.

I do not have an HD tv, nor do I subscribe to HD channels, and yesterday my "SD" Tivo cratered. However, I like to think ahead and I'm wondering if I can get an HD Tivo / DVR now and use it for standard programming in the hopes that someday I get an HD tv and I've got everything else I need in place.

In terms of wiring, I just added another receiver to my home and Directv just came out over the weekend and installed what the tech called an "HD" dish and a 4x8 switch. It's a 4 lnb dish which can see at least 3 satellites in a signal test. So I think I'm covered in the wiring department.

Any advice ?
