i have a 320 gb hd in my series 2 and would like to upgrade to a new 1tb. i cannot get winmfs to work on my computer. i tried using mfslive but do not know of a command to use to backup|restore. i could only find a command for an original tivo drive to an expanded drive. I would like to tranfer all of my shows so a backup file would be too big. any suggestions? thanks

Help, please - MFSLive, VMware Fusion, Mac, USB, image, commands...

I've been reading and searching and testing and trying for two days. I'm finally feeling hopeless. I'm sure it's something simple here and there, I would be so grateful if someone could show me what I'm doing wrong.

I want to make an image of my 80gig Tivo to use to transfer to a bigger drive. Standard stuff.

I'm on a Mac.

I have read the "easy" instructions a thousand times, and it assumes a lot.

Anyway, I downloaded MFS live cd, I got VMWare fusion up and running, booting from MFSlive.

I connected my Tivo drive using a USB adaptor.

I found the little icon that says "connect USB standard 2333" and clicked.

The screen did the following:

---Quote---
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci-hcd and address 2
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB mass Storage devices
scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access SMSC 223 U HS-CF 3.60 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
scsi 1:0:0:1: Direct-Access SMSC 223 U HS-MS 3.60 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
scsi 1:0:0:2: Direct-Access SMSC 223 U HS-SM 3.60 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
scsi 1:0:0:3: Direct-Access SMSC 223 U HS-SD/MMC 3.60 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type0
sd 0:0:0:1: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 0:0:0:1: Attached scsi generic sg1 type0
sd 0:0:0:2: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 0:0:0:2: Attached scsi generic sg2 type0
sd 0:0:0:3: [sdd] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 0:0:0:3: Attached scsi generic sg3 type0
---End Quote---

So then, as the main Mac-VM-Tivo guide suggests:

---Quote---
When you bootup in Fusion with MFS Live, it will boot to Linux and show you the USB drives. Once booted to the
command line in MFS Live, you can issue the following command to check for the presence of the USB drives:
dmesg | grep -i "/dev/[sh][d]"
---End Quote---
None of that did much of anything at all. Just... nothing.

So then I tried to do the next thing:

---Quote---
Depending on which one got detected as what, note down the one that is the original Tivo drive and which one is
the new blank drive. You can validate which one is which with the following command: mfsinfo [device
path you want to test]
Ex:
mfsinfo /dev/sda
---End Quote---
OK...

So here's some examples of what happened when I tried that...

---Quote---
mfsinfo /dev/sda
mfsinfo /dev/sda/10: Not a directory

mfsinfo [/dev/sda/]
msinfo: no such file or directory
---End Quote---
And lots of variations, as I tried to enter it a dozen ways. I also tried sdB, sdC, sdD, and when I first tried it, something about hdY and hdX came up so I tried those...and it's obvious there are important things I'm completely clueless about.

Please, please, please... can someone be a little bit more specific and clear with me? I do not normally do ANY command-line stuff, so it's ALL greek and the only thing I do know how to do is type exactly what I'm told.

I want to be CERTAIN that my drive is seen and functional, I want to back it up to an IMAGE file, and I want to restore that image file to a BIGGER drive. And I want to be absolutely certian that I don't overwrite any of my internal harddrives (I have 4 total) and I don't overwrite the original Tivo.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Tivo HD XL 2TB upgrade - getting Error#86?

So I just got an HD XL, I backed up the original disk, I restored it to a 2TB disk using the current WinMFS, default settings for everything.

It all seemed fine, it dialed in and did a software upgrade, and I was able to set up a bunch of season passes.

Now I started doing MRV to transfer programs from my older Series 3 to this HD XL. I got about 30 programs in, when it hung (while trying to transfer a program, after hitting Select to Continue). I had to hard boot, and then added a few more, got an error #86, and then it hung again at a similar place.

So I figured maybe it just has a limit on the number of MRV things it can handle at once in the ToDo list. So I decided to try adding some more season passes now that my guide was populated.

Nope - Error #86 every time.

Any idea what happened? I'm doing a C&DE now, as that's what the Tivo site says to do, but is something else wrong?

FWIW, I did a full destructive surface scan test of the disk yesterday before doing the image restore.

Thanks for any advice!

Old Series 2 of my brother finally bit the dust and was stuck on "Powering UP".
Pulled old 40GB HD.
I have my own Series 2 that I had upgraded and saved the orig HD (80GB).
Used WinMFS9 to copy image from 80GB drive, saved, then installed on new 750GB drive. (Ran SeaTools and checked the drive for errors: Passed) Installed in my brothers Series 2.
However, nothing changed. Still stuck on "Powering UP"

Any ideas?

Drive Problem still? Don't have another one handy.
Try a reinstall?
Try a different image?
Power supply problem? Everything boots OK.

I was attempting to replace a hard drive in my HD unit with a drive from DVRUpgrade. The manufacturer of my TiVo machine installed too tightly one of the screws that holds the original drive to the bracket, and I can't remove that screw from the hard drive to use it on the replacement drive. Can the replacement drive be installed with only 3 screws to secure it instead of 4? If not, where can I buy a replacement screw (it has some blue o-rings or washers of some type unfamiliar to me). If I must buy a replacement screw with washers/o-rings, what size is it and where might I find what I need? Thanks in advance.

Adding Original Tivo Drive As Second Drive

Ok, I have a Series2 DT and I've just upgraded to a new larger drive. As anyone knows, adding a second drive isn't supposed to be an option in an S2 DT because there's not enough room. However, I'd like to try and add the original drive as a second drive even if I have to use the double-sided tape method. My question is: The original drive already has an image on it so will it work as is with mfsadd? If so, will the recordings on it make any difference? This is, of course, assuming I can find room for it. :)

I have a hughes HDVR2 Series 2, directv with tivo, I would like to make a duplicate hard drive that is larger of course. There is nothing wrong with what i have, just want to expand. I have a pc with media center and it would be great to link the two via wireless, but I think my unit will not work with the tivo wireless usb thingy they sell. Any suggestions with instructions would b a godsend. thank u in advance

Simple question... I hope. I am replacing an S2, single tuner Tivo with a S2, dual tuner model. I had previously added a 2nd HDD to the first Tivo, would like to move this extra HDD to dual tuner model to expand capacity.

Anything special I need to think about or do? Can I just plug it in, and go? I've used MFSTools, etc. before (not very often), and can reflash the drives if needed. Any comments on how I can best proceed?

Simple question... I hope. I am replacing an S2, single tuner Tivo with a S2, dual tuner model. I had previously added a 2nd HDD to the first Tivo, would like to move this extra HDD to dual tuner model to expand capacity.

Anything special I need to think about or do? Can I just plug it in, and go? I've used MFSTools, etc. before (not very often), and can reflash the drives if needed. Any comments on how I can best proceed?

Thanks.

Hardware Problem Identified in Now Playing List

Last night I installed a brand new 1TB hard drive into my Tivo HD using WinMFS and a Tivo Backup Image I had. The upgrade went smoothly and the Tivo booted right up.

After completing setup I entered into the Now Playing list and a message stating that a Hardware Problem had been found was displayed and stated that no new recordings would be made until I restarted the tivo to fix the problem.

I did the restart but the message is still there and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this in the past. Any recommendations on how to go about fixing this?

Using DVRupgrade to get a replacement drive for my s2 and need advice

My s2 was rebooting sporadically for a while and more recently it would just hang at the start screen, after a reboot it would be fine so I didn't care much (it's a spare one for the extra tuner). A few weeks ago I didn't see the tivo listed in the now playing list on my main tivo so I check it out and there is a green screen that tells me about some serious issue and it will run a check for the next three hours, it's been like that since. Sooooo here's where I am, I'm on DVRupgrade selected my replacement size (189 Hour Replacement Drive Kit) and it gives me the option of two hard drive types; Western Digital (AV) or Seagate (D835).

Any preference? Is one a little better than the other? Quieter? Longer life?

Using ReplayTV Drive in Tivo

I just switched to Tivo from ReplayTV and I love it. However, the ReplayTV drive is larger than the Tivo drive so I want to replace the Tivo Drive with the ReplayTV drive because I have a series 2 DT and can't add it. The problem is that the ReplayTV drive is supposed to be 160gb but my computer's bios reports it as twice as much and so does mfstools and when I try to copy my tivo drive mfstools says that the destination drive is too small. Is the drive locked or is it something else?

Edit: Nevermind. I ordered a new drive to use in the Tivo and I'll just sell the ReplayTv as is.

Putting TiVo S2 drive in HUMAX S2

I replaced the 40GB drive in a TiVo TCD24004A with a 320GB drive a while ago, works great. Now the drive in a HUMAX T800 has died (pixelation, freeze ups, reboots). Can I put the 40GB drive from the Tivo S2 into the HUMAX S2? What do I have to do to it first?

TIA, Curtis
