MKV transfers with TiVo Desktop Plus 2.8: Is it possible without re-encoding?

TiVo Desktop Plus 2.8 will transfer high-definition MP4 files with AAC and DD5.1 audio to the TiVo as is, without any re-encoding or quality loss. TiVo Desktop transfers these MP4 files to the TiVo at 20+Mbps, twice the rate of MPG and TiVo files.

I've been using Yamb 2.1b2 (http://yamb.unite-video.com/download.html) to save MKV files with AAC and DD5.1 audio as MP4 files. To do that, you click the Creation -> Click to Create a MP4 file... menu, and select the MKV file.

Is there a way to bypass the remuxing of MKV to MP4 that still allows TiVo Desktop to transfer the MPEG-4 stream as is, at 25-30Mbps? In other words, is there a Windows configuration that allows TiVo Desktop 2.8 to demux the H264 and AAC/DD5.1 streams from a MKV file for transfer, without re-encoding into MPEG-2? I don't want to re-encode it to re-encode with MPEG-2, as causes quality loss and slows the transfer by 70+%.

Notes for those installing Yamb: Choose custom setup in the Yamb installer and check mkvextract. If you get an error about a missing regex.dll, you can download that here (http://pwong.is-a-geek.com/mkvtoolnix/regex2.dll) and place it in the mkvextract subfolder in the Yamb installation directory. If using Windows 7, sure to install the Yamb program to a folder where you have permissions to write, such as a subfolder in your Users folder (ex: My Documents or Desktop). Do the same for the temp folder, defined in Yamb settings.

TiVo Desktop 2.8--Server Stops When Trying to Play m3u Playlists

Running Win7 x64 and TiVo Desktop 2.8.
I can play my individual mp3 files, but when I try to get the TiVo to play an m3u playlist, the TiVo Desktop Server on my PC stops running, and I get a message on the TiVo itself that it could not communicate with the server. The m3u's are in a standard format, i.e.:
D:\My Documents\My Music\AC_DC\Back in Black\06 Back in Black.mp3

Any thoughts on what could be causing the Desktop server to stop each time the TiVo is asked to access the m3u playlists? Very strange.

Thanks...

EDIT: I have tried switching from the default Bonjour protocol to the TiVo Beacon, and it doesn't help. I have also made sure that Windows Firewall (the only firewall I'm running) allows all the TiVo programs and Bonjour access to my network.
EDIT2: I have even tried publishing the My Playlists folder separately from the My Music folder, and the TiVo sees it just fine, but still the server stops running as soon as I try to play the playlist.

2.8 and iPhone (portable) Video Quality

I was using the "edit" listed below to get higher quality video to my iPhone. In TiVo to Go 2.8 there are now settings for different devices but shows seem dark when converted, and not as nice as the old fix was. Does anyone know if you can edit the new version as you could version 2.6.

Here’s what was posted before that I used:

---Quote (Originally by bkdtv)---
I don't know about the Mac version of Tivo Desktop, but on the PC version, you can edit all of the encoding parameters with a resource editor. Said a different way, you can customize everything -- resolution, frame rate, average video bitrate, peak video bitrate, audio bitrate, etc. I appended a screenshot at the bottom of this post.

Download the free XN Resource Editor (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm) application.

Make sure Tivo Desktop is closed. Right-click on the TiVo icon in your task tray and click "Pause Server."

Run the XN Resource Editor and use it to open the c:\Program Files\TiVo\Desktop\Plus\TiVoTrans.dll.

Select ENCODEPROFILES -> 220 -> English on the left. Scroll down to the bottom where you see:You can change the hrez and vrez values as appropriate for your player. In the case of the iPod Touch, you would change hrez to 640 and vrez to 480. If you increase resolution, you'll probably also want to increase the bitrate; you might try a vbitrateK of 1000 with a vmaxbitrateK of 1200.

Save the change. Open Tivo Desktop and select the "H.264 compatible device" profile (instead of iPod) under File -> Preferences -> Portable Devices.

You can right-click on the Tivo icon in your task tray to "Resume Server."

To restore the default settings, delete the TiVoTrans.dll and re-run the TiVo Desktop setup program. When you choose the Repair option, the installer will re-copy the original version of the file.
---End Quote---

TivoToGo Video Playback Problems after switching to digital cable

For a long time, I have used Tivo Desktop Plus 2.7 to transfer shows from my TivoHD to my iPod. Everything worked perfectly until this weekend.

Last Friday, I switched from analog cable to Comcast digital cable. Since then, every show I transfer to my iPod has been corrupted. Typically, for a 30 minute show, the playback is perfect for the first 17-20 minutes. Then, during a commercial break, the video freezes between two commercials, and I am stuck with a frozen image (or sometimes black screen) the rest of the show. The audio continues on, as long as I don't try to fast-forward or rewind the program. Trying to use fast forward after the picture freezes leads to either no audio/video at all, or sometimes reboots the iPod. I cannot playback these videos from within iTunes either (the video cuts out at the same place and the video player freezes up).

Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? I am using Windows XP, and nothing has changed in my set-up (hardware or software) except for the transition from analog to digital cable last week.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Tivo Desktop 2.8.
Functionally everything works fine.

But the playback quality of the transferred .TiVo files is awful.
It looks like they are not de-interlaced.
Fine horizontal streaks whenever there is movement.

This is a fresh install of Win7 and TD 2.8.
Previously (on the same PC) I had Windows XP and TD 2.7 with beautiful video quality.

I can hit the "Pause Portable Device Conversions" button on the System Tray to pause it so that I can watch my video, but it isn't handy to have to get up, grab the mouse and click on the System Tray icon.

I've been trying to get Tivo Desktop 2.8 to stream Music from my networked desktop for a couple days to my Tivo HD.

Unfortunately I could never get it to work. My computer would never show up in the Music, Photos & Showcases list (should be at the bottom). I did all the necessary work throughs, restarting my network, Tivo, computer, Tivo Desktop etc. No dice. Strange part is that I could see my computer in the Now Playing menu at the bottom (for video transfers). Weird.

Well after 1/2 an hour with Tivo support (and them having me repeat everything of course!), guess what happened? We got disconnected! Cripes.

Well I'm typically pretty savvy with this stuff so I dove back in. On a whim I decided to change my Discovery Protocol from Bonjour for Windows (Preferred) to Tivo Beacon. Worked like a charm! Easy peasey.

So do this, hopefully it will work for anyone (I'm running Windows 7 by the way):

Tivo Desktop
Services Tab
Tivo Server Properties
Network Tab
Choose Tivo Beacon
Restart Tivo Desktop (it should prompt for this)

Well I'm typically pretty savvy with this stuff so I dove back in. On a whim I decided to change my Discovery Protocol from Bonjour for Windows (Preferred) to Tivo Beacon. Worked like a charm! Easy peasey.

So do this, hopefully it will work for anyone (I'm running Windows 7 by the way):

Tivo Desktop
Services Tab
Tivo Server Properties
Network Tab
Choose Tivo Beacon
Restart Tivo Desktop (it should prompt for this)

TiVo and my browser

When I bought my first TiVo and networked it, I read about a way to get into the DVR with a web browser by typing in the IP address, and /index, I thought. Gave this a shot with the Series 3 I picked up. I get the index page that just shows that I successfully installe it on the network. I remember being able to actually download shows and movies without using the TiVo desktop software. Does anyone know if that still works?

TiVo Playback Worked but now Stopped in Vista 64-Bit

I have been playing back TiVo files on my Vista Premium 64-Bit laptop for the last year. Over the past week or so, the laptop has developed issues playing back TiVo files. Either the file never starts playing, or starts after about 5 minutes but squashed horizontally.

I have uninstalled, ran the TiVo cleaner, and reinstalled TiVo Desktop 2.7 and 2.6.1 with the same results. I have not tried 2.8, but I'm guessing the same problem will occur.

I noticed that there was an update to the Media Player for Vista 64-bit about a week ago. My guess is that's what caused the problem. I have uninstalled that "fix" but no help.

I guess I could restore to a date prior to a week ago, but I would rather fix the problem than try to avoid it.

Any ideas? I'm going to try Desktop 2.8 to see if that makes a difference.

I setup Tivo Desktop 2.7 on my other pc (Running Windows 7 32-bit) with the same extrenal usb drive, and the videos transfer fine. i tried the Tivo clean ultitly thing and that didn't help. does anybody know how i can fix this problem? Thanks.

No PC to Tivo auto transfers with 2.8 and Vista

I didn't see this posted with 2.8 and Vista. I can't get the auto transfers to work from my PC to the Tivo. I can do a manual transfer just fine but that's only with the auto transfer unchecked and I can at least see it.

Back to 2.6.2 and it works just fine. I have disabled my firewalls and antivirius, restarted and rebooted with 2.8 but it won't transfer. I have switched from Bonjour to Tivo Beacon and still no go.

Also with 2.6.2 and 2.8, I'm using MPEG Streamclip to convert my DVD Vob files to .mpg if that matters.

Thanks for any help
