After experiencing issues with slow MRS on my Premieres with Wireless N adapter, I have decided to purchase the Moca Coax-Ethernet solution.

Just based on what I've read here and realizing wireless is not going to work to my satisfaction.

Is there a particular brand/model recommended for Premiere? I do have an Amplifier in my setup from Time Warner Cable because of high number of cable TV connections in my home. I also have a DLINK DIR-655 router with Digital Cable/Home Telephone bundle.

If there's a particular brand/model you could suggest it would be helpful.

Please let me know. Thanks.

Question about Cable Card

Hi all -

I'm new to this forum so forgive my ignorance. Also, I apologize in advance if this question is posted in the incorrect section.

I recently purchased a TiVo Premiere series 4 and stopped by my cable company (Time Warner Manhattan) to pick up the cable card needed. I was given a CISCO STA1520 tuning box alongside the cable card. I asked the technician if I needed it and he said that some channels may not display properly or not show up at all. He said if this happened to use the box.

I really dont want another box to connect. Do you guys think i'm going to need the CISCO box, or do you think the cable card will suffice? I also asked if I needed to call CS to get the card paired up with the TiVo and he said no. The card should be programmed and ready to go when I get home and all i have to do is pop the card in.

Thanks for listening everyone.

Premiere randomly loses ability to swap tuners

Got a Premiere about two months ago and after some Comcast headaches everything seemed to be fine except for one thing.

Randomly and regularly, the Live/Swap remote button will not cause the Tivo to swap tuners. The first press brings up the program guide. A second press brings up the channel info overlay. Repeated presses just cycle between these two overlays.

I have checked the DVR Diagnostics info to verify that the two tuners are indeed on different channels. I have tried multiple remotes and the Tivo behavior does not change. A trip through Tivo Central will sometimes appear to fix the problem and restore the swap function, but not always.

I've been working with Tivo tech support and they sent me a new Premiere. Unfortunately, it has exactly the same behavior! The only thing in common between the original and the replacement is the cablecard.

Has anyone heard of this behavior? One Tivo technician said he had handled maybe three calls over the last two years for this problem.

Could it be cablecard related? I don't see how, since the cablecard has to support two output streams concurrently so presumably the stream selected for display is handled by the Tivo hardware.

On the channel info overlay, I just noticed that the mini menu on the right edge has a "swap tuners" button. (Was that there in the last rev?) Using this method reliably swaps tuners and heals things so that the remote Swap/Live button works again. Ironically, cursoring to the menu "swap" button brings up a helpful suggestion that a faster way to swap tuners is to use the Swap/Live button on the remote.:)

Thanks for any suggestions.

RAID for THR-22

Finding information on working RAID solutions for the new DirecTV HD Tivo is difficult, so I thought I'd post a summary of what I've found, my experiences, and list my working configuration. (Scroll down towards the bottom if you just want a final configuration.)

-------------------
First, some background:

1) The DirecTV DVRs (HR-2x) are finicky about what eSATA enclosures/drives they will work with. There are several threads discussing this, but for a single drive (non-RAID) the most prevalent working boxes appear to be the Antec MX-1 and the Thermaltake Max 5. I've used both and can confirm that they do indeed work and are stable.

2) RAID using consumer (non-enterprise/server) rated drives can be problematic, and is related to drive error recovery algorithms. This seems to be especially true for RAID-5 systems. I've had experience with one RAID-5 enclosure (the Buffalo Drivestation Quattro) and could NOT get it to function with an HR-21. I could not determine if this was an eSATA compatibility issue or a RAID-5 problem.

However, RAID-0 and RAID-1 do seem to work well with consumer drives, and at least one company (Western Digital) explicitly states that their drives are compatible with this configuration.

3) Max capacity for HR-2x series units (including the THR-22) is 2GB.

-------------------------------
Now my experience:

1) I'd decided to use a RAID-1 configuration with 2 x 2GB drives. This gives data redundancy (which was my reason for going with RAID) and the maximum possible capacity.

2) Based on hints found in various forums, I selected the Sans Digital MS2UTN+B eSATA RAID enclosure.

3) Also based on various discussions I initially selected the Western Digital Caviar Green 2GB (WD20EARX) drives.

4) Installation of the drives into the MS2UTN was easy. I selected RAID-1 (amongst several options) using the rotary selector on the back and powered it up. I used the USB port to connect it to a PC, and using the Sans Digital supplied software I confirmed the RAID settings and status of the unit.

5) I then powered down the THR-22 and connected the MS2UTN to the DVR eSATA port. I rebooted the THR-22 and it recognized the new "drive", and downloaded/installed the Tivo software. (NOTE: This takes a while and there may be no indication (lights, etc) for several minutes that it has even turned on -- be patient.)

6) I went through the Tivo setup process, created some season passes, and recorded some shows. I thought I was home free, but a few hours later the recordings began to glitch and then the THR-22 began rebooting frequently. (Being a longtime user of Tivos and having nursed a HR10-250 along for several years I recognized this as probably being symptomatic of a drive problem).

7) I reconnected the MS2UTN to my PC and using the RAID managment software found that the array was reporting that it need to be rebuilt. I attempted to do so, but after several hours the rebuild failed. Did some more research on the WD drives and found references to an "Intellipark" function that caused problems with RAID systems. I then downloaded WD software and and turned off this function, but the problems remained -- array would not sucessfully rebuild. I download WD diagnostic software and ran extensive drive tests and found that BOTH drives had failed.

8) I didn't want to guess if the problems were RAID incompatiblity as well as bad drives, so I returned the WD drives to try something different.

9) Next up: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 5900RPM, ST320005N4A1AS-RK. (I selected the retail kit version since this gives a 5-year warranty. The same drive is available as ST2000DL003 with a 3-year warranty.) This time, having learned a lesson, I ran extensive tests on the drives using Seagate's diagnostic tools BEFORE putting them in the RAID box. As before, I verified the RAID configuration using a PC, then connected it to the THR-22 eSATA port and power-cycled the DVR. DVR found the new "drive" and initialized it, then I went through Tivo setup, etc.

10) This configuration has worked flawlessly for over 2 weeks.

==========================

MY WORKING CONFIGURATION:

1) RAID enclosure: Sans Digital MS2UTN+B (in RAID-1 mode)
2) Hard drives: 2 x Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB (ST320005N4A1AS-RK)

==========================

Futher observations/notes:

1) The Sans Digital MS2UTN fan is loud. Even though their advertising and manuals talk about temperature-sensitive cooling, evidently a recent firmware change forces the the fan to high. My solution was to buy a Zalman FANMATE-2 which allows me to control the fan speed. (Just connecting the 12V fan power to 5V, a usually successful strategy, did not allow the fan to start.) Note that the Zalman connectors are standard sized for a motherboard 3-pin fan port, and will not fit the micro fan controller header in the MS2UTN. I solved this by cutting off the fan connector and the FANMATE connectors and splicing the appropriate wires to make it compatible. The FANMATE sits on the back side of the enclosure using (provided) double-sided tape. At the low end of the range the MS2UTN fan is inaudible but moves enough air to keep the drives cool. (It probably helps that these are "green" 5900 RPM drives).

2) Since the MS2UTN uses the Silicon Image 5744 chipset I would think that any RAID box based on the same chipset would also work for this configuration, especially if it lists the same RAID modes provided by the MS2UTN (RAID-0, RAID-1, SAFE33, SAFE50, JBOD). I think Cavalry and Lacie had enclosures fitting this description, but I don't know their availability and haven't tested them.

Long Time S2/S3 User - Premier Worth Checking Out?

I've seen/heard a little buzz lately surrounding the TiVo Premiere. As a long time Series 2 & 3 user, is it time to start to check out the latest and greatest?

I do still feel a bit BURNED as an early fan and adopter of the Series 3 ($$) when they first came out, only to have the device quickly fall off the development path. No functional S3 complaints whatsoever, but the Comcast/Netflix/Hulu stuff has gained my attention.

I have a few questions for the S3 converts out there:

1. I love the native GUI elements of the S3, but have NEVER been fond of the newer interface elements, like TiVo Search and other web-enabled apps (feel half baked, chunky, sluggish, etc.). Does the Premiere UI retain the native GUI elements, or improve upon the web app UI elements? Is there anywhere to go to see a demo of the Premiere interface in action? I poked around just a bit and could not find much more than screenshots. Any links??

2. What would be the net change for my current S3 setup, w/2 cable cards from Comcast? I presume I would simply swap these cards out for 1 (or 2?) replacements, correct? Is monthly fee for Premiere cable card(s) comparable to S3 cards?

3. Are the Premiere devices able to take advantage of the TiVo multi-device subscription discount? I have Lifetime on one S2 and a discounted monthly on my S3. I guess I would debate replacing the S3 with a Premiere, vs keeping BOTH units - any points to consider relative to TiVo subscriptions?

4. I think I have read of some shortcomings/complaints/incomplete aspects of the Premiere device. It has been a while since I have read anything about the newest generation device. Have the nagging issues been addressed?

Thank for any advice you can provide!

Just got this email from my wife (I'm at work):

---Quote---
The new Netflix software is showing a 4:3 TV show, it's supposed to be Letterboxing but it's not, so it's cutting off the top and bottom. We're assuming this is a Netflix bug. Been looking for setting in Netflix to mess with aspect ratio, but can't find anything. Looked online but can't find anybody complaining about this or a solution. We haven't done any testing to see if the problem is just one show, or all 4:3 TV shows, what happens with movies, or if it messes up on computers and such… Wondering if you have any thoughts or have heard something.
---End Quote---
[We've got the latest software update on our Premiere.] Anyone know the answer to it?

Thanks...

Wow, pretty good ending. Going to be a long summer waiting to find out what happens! It has been pretty obvious that Duckies time was coming to an end, I'm guessing there is the possibility that he could recover. Wonder if Palmer will take over as the head ME or not. All in all, I would say this was another great NCIS season, and I am looking forward to the next!

The first hour, for me, was just meh. Good music, but the episode didn't have very good flow at all. Even though it added to the odd pacing of the episode, I'm glad that the swap segment was as short as it was. It was good as a one off joke, but I think a whole episode of that would've been way too over the top. Some of the swaps were inspired (seriously, who would've thought that Darren Criss would make that good of a Puck? Or Harry Shum Jr. pulling off Joe's dreadlocks?) and some were just WTF (What kind of drugs were they on when they made Kevin play Brittany?).

The second hour, though... very, very good. Although, was I the only one who thought it was a little too fairy-tale ending, almost like you expected it to be one giant dream sequence? I mean, having Carmen Thibideau show up, them winning Nationals, the whole school (including everyone who hated them) suddenly congratulating them, and Will Schuster go from being a rubbish Spanish teacher to Teacher of the Year? It was a bit much.

I did like seeing Sue singing along with the New Directions as they perfomed "We Are the Champions." I'm not sure I can swallow the total about-face they did with Sue this season, sending her to Character Rehab... but I'm glad they did it. Having a likable but blunt Sue is so much better than the hateful Sue that we had for so long. We're back to the Sue that I liked when she was briefly principal.

I know this has been covered before, but I have only the most basic cable package that gives you the locals and Spanish/Portuguese channels.
I have had a cable card in a TivoHD lifetime at no charge for a while.

A few weeks ago we had a 100% digital conversion.

Now if I get a second cable card for a TV with a cablecard slot and they want to charge me 7.45 for an additional outlet. 9.95 - 2.50 for customer owned equipment. They said I could get 2 digital adapters at no cost (only in SD)

I can't see how people will own more than one Tivo with this additional $80 a year fee per outlet.

Even if I get a second Tivo think I'll just use an antenna for the second outlet.

For the past couple weeks my two HD TiVOs will lose random channels. I think it's only HD channels but it could be those are the only ones I watch so I might not notice if any others are crapping out too. Sometimes a reboot brings them back, sometimes not. Frustrating when a recording is missed because the TiVO thinks it doesn't have a signal.
