Wow. No thread yet?
I was just about to start one. You beat me to it :)
I never realized that Oman was that modernized, at least in Muscat proper. Cool that the one couple got engaged and then finished first and won the honeymoon (was really glad they didn't win a pair of jet skiis or something). Wasn't all that impressed by the tasks this week. Seems like we've done ones like those before.

So is it a general rule of TAR that you can't pay a taxi for you to follow when you're driving your own vehicle?
Disappointed that the three teams I want out the most finished out in the top three spots.
Interesting that the two teams that relied heavily on maps seemed to get hopelessly lost.

No. Well, maybe...
It's either a new rule or they just did not show them reading the warning on the clue about it. In the past there have been clue warnings that said that you cannot pay to follow a taxi.
Given that they always, as far as I know, show at least 1 team reading any special warnings attached to a clue (you must walk, you can't pay a taxi and follow it on foot, etc), I'm leaning towards it is a new rule. In past seasons, everyone would do this all the time when they had to drive places, so the fact that we haven't seen anyone do that before now also makes me think it's a new rule.

And that's fine with me. It's one thing if you have the luck or the social skills to get someone to help, another thing entirely to pay someone to help. I always hated it when people did that. If it is a new rule, I am in favor.
Not sure about the new uturn X 2 thing.

I cannot believe that they overslept by 2 hours! And that after not being able to get on the same flight as everybody else and arriving later, they ended up in first place. Crazy!

Yeah, if it is a new rule, it's a long overdue one. The whole paying a cab to lead you around thing was getting out of hand.

I have a feeling it's a new, general rule and not a task/clue specific rule. Otherwise they would have shown at least one team reading that part out loud. I'd like to see the whole list of rules actually, I think it would be interesting.
This is a weird season for me, no teams I really like and no teams I really hate (hate the inked guy though, he's an ass____)

In my mind this indicates that the pit stops are not uniform now. Maybe this one was 8 hours and they spent part of the time in interviews and meals.

Obviously it's all in the editing, but I'd assume there was a wide difference between the doctors and Dad and daughter. It's amazing that the daughter said they were in the car driving for almost 9 hours?!? Let's go Dr's....I'd really like to see them win, they've had a great race so far!

I don't think it was an overly huge deficit. Didn't the doctors and father/daughter see each other when they were both still in the water trucks?
Although i found it amusing that by the time the father/daughter made it to the market all the stores surrounding Ali Baba were closed. that had to make it easier.

Yes, they went past each other at least twice, once in the water trucks and once on the way to the pit stop. Possibly also once when Gary and Mallory were coming up the mountain for the roadblock and the doctors were leaving.
The times were mentioned in the Elimination Station video:
Mallory said they only came in last by 5 minutes, and that the leg was 16 hours long.

The flight they were on only landed ten minutes later than the one ahead of them. Plus, when they arrived in Oman all teams had to camp out and bunch up to get their ingots inscribed with a time. I am sure that the producers were well aware of the time, the flights, etc. and woke them up in plenty of time to avoid being left behind the pack. I wish they had really let them oversleep, that would be interesting.

I highly doubt the producers didn't intervene. That's why they happened to have a camera crew in their motel room instead of waiting for them at the starting mat.

When they were filming in a hallway outside a motel room, that snoring you could hear was not Chad, it was a sound affect added in post-production. Most people don't even realize that.

Maybe "most people" don't... but it seems pretty obvious to me (and I'm sure to most of us here at TCF).
Similarly, when they have edits like the one where one teams says "they're probably in their car laughing at us right now" and they cut to the other team in their car laughing... that's probably cut out-of-sequence.

Seems to me their camera crew WAS at the starting mat and when they didn't show up on time the crew hung out by the hotel room until they woke up. Seems obvious.

I almost missed a TAR thread started by my future race partner?? Oh, no. You're gonna find someone else now! :D
Add me to the "pretty sure the rules don't allow the producers/crew to wake them up" crowd. There's a reason they notate editing that does not affect the competition, because doing something like waking up an oversleeping team affects the competition.
Was I the only one shouting at the TV..."Don't do it, Stephanie! Don't do it!" :D
Though oddly enough, Chad apparently handed his Jerk Boyfriend card directly to Nick in this leg, after the proposal.

the camera crews often show the teams leaving their hotel rooms, so it's not unthinkable they waited outside until they heard them awake then entered to film.

If she had said "no," I wonder if they would have kept that in the show? :p
Although a lot of women would have said "yes" just to spare their bf the embarrassment, and then "changed their mind" later in private. I don't know why some guys feel the need to do these very public proposals in front of a bunch of strangers, and TV cameras. Risky and not very intimate or romantic.
It seems like he cares more about what other people think than having a nice moment for the two of them. I'd be annoyed at getting a proposal like that. But I wouldn't be with a tool like that in the first place, so I guess she knows what she's getting. :p

It was funny when he was telling her how much she meant to him, Steph went to kiss him and he psyched her out by dropping to a knee instead!

How much suck was it to be part of the TAR setup crew and haul goats and hundreds of lamps up to that desolate mountain.

I think the telling part was that he was not only within view of the cameras, but within view of the other teams, so they could make the "oh, my God!" comments.
He obviously can't do much about the cameras, since they're on the teams fuil-time (well, he could have proposed in private before or after the show ;) ), but he could have proposed without a live audience.
Maybe in their hotel room before they dozed off. ;)

Forgot that one. And really, he repeated it so many times (at least in the editing) that I shouldn't have forgotten it.
I was half expecting him not to get the clue.
Speaking of editing, I do wonder if Chad's proposal got him basically a version of a Winner's Edit. Did he really clean up his act with Stephanie the rest of the leg, or did they drop something on the proverbial cutting room floor?
I suppose even a major tool like Chad would be so happy that she said yes, that he might actually treat her with respect for once. And Nick was so easily available for Jerk Boyfriend moments on this leg, so they didn't need Chad's antics, anyway.

If you're gonna propose while on a reality show, you may as well do it on camera. If you don't want it to be on camera then you should probably just wait until the race is over.

I seem to remember it becoming a rule a couple of seasons ago. It got to the point that everybody was using the "follow the cab driver" routine. I just can't remember how long ago.

That reason is DeBeers, which has spent many millions (billions?) of dollars convincing them that's it's "necessary" to have a diamond. So at least that's understandable where that stupid ring obsession comes from. It's the world's most successful ad campaign, convincing millions of people to spend a fortune for something that is practically worthless.
And the ad campaign has worked on men too. I know a couple in which the woman didn't want a ring at all, and the man insisted because he thought people would think he was cheap if he didn't get her a ring.
There is no marketing campaign for public or televised proposals. Maybe it's just all the movie scenes or something which convinces men that it's a good idea. But most women I know aren't big fans in real life. Although I'm sure some would love the attention, probably the same kind of people who try out for reality shows. :p

This. Too bad that the fact that he treats her like crap trumps the public proposal in communicating to the world how special he thinks she is.
I thought that it was interesting that when they walked back to the group she went and sat with the other girls - almost looked like she wanted to disappear from the moment - and Chad was left standing there by himself.

I think him proposing publicly and in the middle of the race is disrespectful to her. It really puts her in a bind and almost forces her to say yes. She had no choice but to say yes. How could they finish the race together if she had said no? More evidence of his being a jerk to her.

Never seen those GC goats so can't compare, but the Rim Trail has to be more habitable than the place in Oman. Plus those are mountain goats and the Oman goats seem like the domesticated type that like to eat paper off of contestants. :)

I don't know about that... they don't actually live on the trail, they live in the canyon. Since the trail runs along the rim as the name would imply, you can go right up to the edge and look over into the canyon and sometimes see them not that far below you.
I forgot about the paper eating one, though, so you are probably right. :)

But posting a video on YouTube after the fact is different b/c it's not happening live. At least if the woman says "no" the man can choose not to post it on Youtube, and nobody has to know about it. :p
But I still don't get the urge to share something so private and personal with a bunch of strangers, or the world at large. The idea is very strange to me. But obviously there are plenty of men and women out there who find it wildly romantic. Or something. Maybe I would have thought so at 18.

Most of the videos are of public proposals. Judging from the youtube comments, there are plenty of women who appreciate the public display. I would think that if a guy is proposing, he is likely to have an idea of how his potential fiance would want to be proposed to.

I saw a tv show (on ION?) where they helped guys stage really elaborate proposals. On guy wearing a suit of armor rode on a white charger up to his girlfriend who was waiting for him a sidewalk cafe to propose. (Of course he had trouble getting on & off the horse in the armor) Another wanted a plane to pull a banner with the proposal on it when they were at a restaurant overlooking the ocean. (He had to keep stalling her because the plane had wind problems)
And I just read about a guy in Spain who proposed to his girlfriend on a game show, and later killed her when she said "No".

I have no doubt that they were way behind, but the nine-hours comment is completely without context. For all we know, it may have taken the rest of the teams 7 hours to drive that same stretch.

They actually made quite a show of changing their caption from "Newly Dating" to "Engaged." There was a little sound effect and the caption sparkled for a second.

Not that marriage is even remotely in the cards for me, but I can't imagine proposing to my would-be fiancee at a ball game, via a banner from a plane or on, uh, a reality TV show. Even if I was reasonably sure she would say yes. :D
As others said here, I don't like the whole idea that she feels forced to say yes, putting the pressure on her, etc...and I figure how I treat her and spend time with her would be an adequate display of my affection for her.

I could have sworn I had seen "Newly Dating" earlier. I wonder how "newly" it was. I can't see proposing after only a couple of months on a reality show like that. Just doesn't click with me.
