So after three years of contract service I got Tivo's $99 lifetime offer (actually I let the service expire and got the offer about 2 months later). Anyway, since I now have lifetime on the unit, I was thinking of doing some preventative maintenance on the old girl...

1) New hard drive (will probably upgrade to 1TB)- these things tend to fail and mine has had a long life so far. Also, it would be nice peace of mind to have the old one as a backup.
2) Open the unit up for a dusting
3) Replace or oil the internal fan

Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions? I'd like to get as much use as much life as possible out of this S3... I really LOVE the external display.

Thx in advance

Clearing the dust out of the box would do a world of good. Plus, it helps to dissipate heat from the components better and reduce failure. You would need to Torx T10 sized screwdriver. Avoid the power supply section opposite the hard drive side since its unshielded and there may still be charged. Just use a can of dusting air. Its not hard to imagine the amount of dust accumulated over the years.

I did both at the same time when my 3 years was up - swapped in a new hard drive and cleaned out 3 years worth of dust. There was a TON of it. That was almost a year ago now, and it's still going strong! I just wish I could have gotten the $99 offer... I paid full price, and then when they started offering the $99 deal a few weeks later, they refused to give me any refund.
