View Full Version : Can resolution be locked-down tight?

OK, I used to have this issue with my Series 3 before I sold it last year -- and the new Premiere is exhibiting the same behavior. In a nutshell, I want the output resolution to stay LOCKED at 720p no matter what. Unfortunately, because I am running it through an HDMI switch, it continually defaults back to 1080i when I switch away and come back, or if I remove the HDMI cable for whatever reason. I have deselected all of the output resolutions except 720p, but it keeps going back to 1080i, even though that should not be an available choice.
Is there any way to absolutely lock down the resolution?? Once it changes to 1080i, I have to drill deep into the menus to change it back (the resolution toggle on the remote has no effect -- it only shows 1080i as an option once it switches).
Any thoughts appreciated!

What's the make/model of this switch?

It's an Octava "4x2 HDMI Matrix Switch" -- doesn't have a real model number as near as I can tell.

On the Series 3 set the video to fixed 720p and the resolution will not change coming from the TiVo, your TV or switch may change the resolution, nothing the TiVo can do about that. I don't have the Series 4 yet so i don't know about that option on the Series 4.

Not quite sure what you are saying. When I got into the video settings, I am deselecting everything except 720p -- is that the same as setting it to "fixed?" When I switch to a different input and come back to TiVo, then go into the video menu again, it is no longer on 720p, but instead on 1080i. I don't see a way to tell it to NEVER switch to any other resolution.
Also, if I enable both 720p and 1080i, when I switch away and come back, the 720p option is UNCHECKED.

Not sure where you're "de-selecting" resolutions.
On an S3: Settings -> Video -> Video Output Format:
* Native - all formats output as is, without extra processing;
* Hybrid - all SD output output as 480p, all other formats output as is;
* Hybrid 720p - all SD output as 480p, all HD converted to 720p;
* Hybrid 1080i - all SD output as 480p, all HD converted to 1080i;
* Fixed 1080i - all formats converted to 1080i for output;
* Fixed 720p - all formats converted to 720p for output;
* Fixed 480p - all formats converted to 480p for output;
* Fixed 480i - all formats converted to 480i for output;
Select "Fixed 720p". Should be the same on the Prem.

it sounds like 720p is NOT a native resolution of your panel...what is the model number of your TV?

That's where I am. The available settings are:
*480i
*480p
*720p
*1080i
*1080p (24fps, Pass-through only)
No "native" or "hybrid" options, even though I don't want those anyway. The word "fixed" is not shown anywhere (though as I recall, on my S3, that's what is said -- and that didn't work either).

I have two sets that I switch between -- both are 720p panels. Here are the models:
Sony KDL-23S2010
LG 19LH20

Try a different HDMi switch. I run through multiple HDMI switches and have zero problems with my tiVoHD and Series 3 for the resolutions. Native stays on native and if I pick a fixed resoultion that will stay as well.
all HDMI switches are not the same. Some have compatibilty problems with some devices.

It sure works on my 720P panel when i set the S3 to fixed 720p, as I don't have my Premiere yet I can't comment on that units output. I have a low cost old panel (in that room) that takes about 2 seconds to change resolution, so I know if the resolution changes.

Sounds like a bug in the S4. Selecting only 720p should be the same as the S3 '720p fixed'. At least that's how the PS3 does it.
What does your manual say?

I think I found a bug. None of the video outputs will stay selected for a long period of time except 1080i. The other resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080p) only stay selected for a few hours then deselect themselves. I am not selecting auto select. I just select every resolution since my TV can do all resolutions then select continue, then I press thumbs up 3 times. I have a Pioneer Kuro plasma.

I don't have another one to try, but I am sure that the switch is part of the problem. I was hoping that the Premiere would "ignore" whatever that problem and just stay where I put it -- I have a DirecTV DVR going into the switch too, and it never changes resolution.
This is kind of an unusual switch though -- it has four inputs and TWO outputs, so any one of the inputs can be switched to either output (though not to both outputs at once).

It's an Octava "4x2 HDMI Matrix Switch" -- doesn't have a real model number as near as I can tell.
Most likely what you're experiencing is a "feature" of the Octava's "Smart Scan" functionality with your switch scanning the HDMI input signal and seeing that the Tivos report they are capable of 1080i output and your switch then actively directing the Tivos to supply that format. The fact that you only see this when you "switch away and come back" or remove and re-insert the HDMI cable is a strong indicator that you're being "helped" by the Octava's Smart Scan function as those situations are precisely when the Octava's Smart Scan function is supposed to do its thing.
If you want to confirm that, you could try disabling the Octava Smart Scan feature by pressing the manual pushbutton on the unit for approx. 5 seconds until the LED flashes. (I think that's the right method for your model; if not, on some Octava models it can be disabled by pressing *314 on the remote so you might try that)
Cycling power to the switch will re-enable the Octava Smart Scan feature.
If the Octava Smart Scan is the cause of your problem and you decide you want the feature to stay off even when power cycles, the manufacturer has an alternate firmware available (upon request) which permanently disables the Smart Scan feature.

That's a good thought, but unfortunately I already have Smart Scan turned off. I do believe the TiVo is being directed to change modes -- just wish there was a way to prevent that from happening (like the DirecTV DVRs).

I think it is part of your problem. I came home today and noticed that all video outputs deselected themselves except for 1080i. With this current bug, there is no way to go completey native (for longer than a few hours) on all resolutions save 1080i. The current software on this Premiere has a beta feel to it.
