Sorry guys if this has been covered, but after searching I can't find the answer.

If I get a Tivo Premiere can I keep my eSata drive currently hooked up to my Tivo HD?

Thanks!

Correct, at least for the 1TB size, which is explicitly mentioned as an option for the Premiere. That's my plan too.

If you are talking about moving the esata drive from a TivoHD to the new Premiere...

Yes, you can, but you will have to start from scratch and will lose any data already on the esata drive.

For $129 at amazon it's a no brainer.

Agreed. You get the extra space for only a little more than the cost of a bigger internal drive, plus don't void warranty.

500 gig drive is good, also?

can the stored content be transfered to a PC then back?

AFAIK, yes, as long as both Tivos have the same MAK (Media Access Key) and the shows are not copy protected.

So a TiVo to TiVo transfer should work as well?

Just to be clear, you can transfer programs over the network if they're not copy protected. You cannot plug an eSata drive into your TiVo, copy shows and then plug that same eSata into your PC and copy the shows.

Disconnecting the eSata drive from your TiVo loses all of your programming recorded since the drive was added. This is why I don't trust TiVo's disk pairing scheme. Since I don't have copy protection to worry about I prefer to copy programs to my network drive.

Chances are that movies and shows downloaded from Blockbuster, Amazon and other partners are going to be copy protected. :(

Yes they are. Well at least the ones I have tried. But I thought with amazon you could download them to more than one box. At least I was able to in the past.
